From the moment I joined the Science Olympiad team in 6th grade, I was hooked. It was incredible to compete with hundreds of like-minded peers around the state of Texas while learning about biology, environmental science, and even Rube Goldberg machines all in the same weekend. In high school, I continued with my passion for science by participating on the science bowl team. This new form of competition was quick-paced and exciting, forcing me to be quick-witted and bold with my answer choices. When I transferred to Saint Mary's Hall, I had the opportunity to take a wide variety of science courses that really pushed me to go beyond the text and really comprehend the material. Throughout the summer of my sophomore year I was able to take an
I was too young to compete, and by the time I was old enough, my family had relocated to Georgia. Although my opportunity was stifled, my passion for STEM was not. While in middle school, I seized the chance to apply to a STEM magnet school and was accepted. Today I am grateful for my experience as I’ve taken advanced math and science courses that will prepare me for college. I also was Vice President of my school’s Science Club and member of the Science Olympiad Team. I learned about community opportunities and different applications of science through these extracurriculars. Through Science Club, I led and performed experiments for elementary and Special Education students interested in STEM at outreach events and science fairs. In Science Olympiad, I participated in Technical Problem Solving and Compound Machines events. These events gave me a glimpse at mechanical engineering as I built devices with my partner, and how to think creatively and logically, which are key in the science
Science is in my blood. I grew up always being fascinated in science both physical and environmental. My love for science started early when I was able to play outside every day and performing my own experiments in the backyard. Throughout middle school and high school, I took every available science course, I simply just wanted to know more. I did not know my exact path of study until my senior year in high school. I enrolled into an AP Environmental Science class, a brand new test run course at my school. Thinking back to AP Environmental Science, it was not just the material that directed my study. Ultimately it was my teacher, Mrs. Andre, who strengthen the flames of desire and intrigue to continue along the environmental studies path. Her drive and passion every day is what inspired me to focus on environmental education and communication.
Before high school, I had never looked forward to a science class. The only reason I even took biology freshman year was because it seemed to be the lesser of two evils, the other being earth science. As it turned out, that biology class became the most pivotal course I took during my four years of high school, and was a major factor in my decision to choose biology as my major.
One time when playing travel baseball my team played in a 16 youth tournament , and we were the only 14 and 15 year old team. We were a very small team in size and numbers , but we had a great amount of talent for our size and age. The tournament took place in Columbus Ohio. We were the only team from Tennessee in the tournament , and we worked very hard all year to make it to the tournament. We played up in pretty much every tournament all season , so we came prepared to see some very talented and big teams. Sure enough we showed up to our hotel the first day arriving and there were tons of teams staying in the same hotel , and by the looks of these teams we were by far the smallest team. The next day was the start of the tournament and we
Gabe’s quote that he chose that best represented his presentation stood out to me. I can relate to these words of wisdom with volleyball. Getting to the State Tournament is never easy for high school volleyball. My sophomore year we fell short in the second round to qualify and that was so disappointing for our team. The next year we came back with lots of intensity and drive, but fell short in the last game before qualifying. Fortunately, we took all the anger and disappointment and worked our tails off. We ended up qualifying, it was one of the coolest experience that has happened to me, and it shows that hard work pays off in the end, and to never give up.
Science has always been the most fascinating and intriguing subject to me. I enjoy studying different concepts while collaborating in groups, performing lab experiments and researching a variety of topics. This is why I hope to be placed in the honors science course next year. I feel that my strong grades, my positive attitude towards learning science and my work habits show that I am prepared to pursue an honors science course in ninth grade.
I really like science, math, and technology, and I try to learn as much as I can when I have free time. After school, I participate in clubs to enhance my skills. One extracurricular activity I do is Science Olympiad, a club that works to prepare for a Science competition against other regional schools on different types of science related topics. This club is a really good way to strengthen my knowledge in STEM related topics. Another extracurricular activity I engage in is Science Bowl, another club that prepares for a science competition in March. By participating in this club, I can improve my speed in answering science related subjects. I really enjoy being part of these fun and learning Science competitions. After school, I partake in an extracurricular group, Math Honors Society. By engaging in this group, I can help out other students who are
This year felt different. I made real, good friends that I thought would last until at least until high school. They felt like family to me, and talking to them every single day in class was something I never thought would really end so soon. Of course, the world does not revolve around the lives of seventh graders and keeps on going.
The summer team consisted of tournament’s in the state of Florida, also one big trip to West Virginia. So this year to me was not the most important year to be the starting pitcher to me, because there were seniors looking for schools to also play for and coaches needed to give them a shot before lower classmen. So this year I started a couple games, I also closed a couple just as a sophomore. I wasn’t the best on the team, but I knew if I did my best and worked hard for next year I could be. After the summer team was over I felt good about where I stood skill level with everyone. So at the end of the summer my coach talked to me and asked me to go to a new school, he will be coaching at (Keswick Christian) so deciding where to go was almost
High school athletics can form a bond that nothing else can. Throughout my high school career I have been blessed with the opportunity to participate in multiple sports such as cross country, basketball, and track. These sports have shaped my character in a way that nothing else has. It has taught me to stay loyal to those who push me to be better, it has taught me to encourage others when they think they can go no farther as well as the other way around, and it has taught me that the people you play with in high school will have an effect on your life forever. They turned me into a person that is willing to go the extra mile for someone, and they have turned me into a person that will not give up in the sight of
I joined the Scholastic Scrimmage club because my brother Jason was in it before me and so, I wanted to see what it was all about. I soon found a community of people there who thought like I did, who were as curious to learn new things as I was, and as competitive (in a good way) as I was, and still am. I always looked forward to going to practices and competitions after school, to find the limits of what I knew, and to ultimately expand those limits. Then, in my junior year, I became captain, and I had to become the trainer and leader, not the student, and that has become a very fulfilling duty as I see freshmen coming into Scholastic Scrimmage practices just as excited for the next hour as I was. Scholastic Scrimmage is not only a
I have been playing volleyball since I was ten years old. Now that I’m a senior, I applied to be a coach for the seventh grade volleyball team at our local middle school, Taylor. During the first week, I had a small team with nine girls, which was not nearly enough. Tryouts continued and the sign ups trickled in and soon enough, I had seventeen girls and two teams. I was sharing the gym with the sixth and eighth grade teams, so vying for gym time for each team was taxing, not to mention the two games per week for each team. The girls I was working with were scattered in skill level, ranging from beginner to near expert.
Ever since I was younger, I’ve always had this passion to be ahead of my class. So whenever I found a topic that was interesting but perplexing, I would dive deep into researching it. I am very competitive and always strive to be ahead of my peers by finding out even more than what the teacher had expected me to know. I still have that passion and I still strive to be the best that I can be. The BLAST Program allows me another opportunity to discover the wonders of the world--Science, Mathematics, and Technology. Since I started school, I have taken quite a few STEM related classes which include Physical Science, Biology I, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Earth Science. During all of these classes I have had more dedication towards them than any of my other
Have you ever been in a situation where you literally think time flies? I most definitely have! My cheer team and I made it to nationals which is located in South Carolina. My cheer team and I made it very far as far as competing. We got third in regionals, first at state, and at nationals we got zero deductions but didn’t place. It was one of the best feeling i've ever had! Winning felt like nothing could ever go wrong! My heart was beating so fast each time and I had tears in my eyes, knowing we made it so far together was heart warming.
My schedule for next year will be AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, Multivariable Calculus & Linear Algebra, AP Great Books, AP Spanish 6, and AP Computer Science. While it seems like a lot, it should be manageable considering I will enter AP Physics C, AP Computer Science, Linear Algebra, and AP Spanish 6 with previous experience (hovercraft, astronomy/astrophysics, Physics Olympiad, the summer science program, a decade of Spanish). Outside of the classroom, my other clubs include BinaryHeart, math team, and computer science club, but the time commitment from them are marginal and rarely pass an hour a week. Even with my intense schedule this year, with the same clubs and 6 APs, I have been able to dedicate significant amount of time Science Olympiad.
