Personal Narrative: Wellesley College

A great impact that I witnessed that year is when I took the school field trip to numerous colleges close to the city. I had never been to a university or even a community college. Therefore, me going to those visit gave me a greater idea on what type of college I'd like to attend. One of the colleges I remembered we toured to was Lakeland Community College. I really liked the aspects that it has, with the classrooms even the on campus living. Taking trip like that sets your mind up but also prepares you to know what to expect and look for when you are college searching.

East Carolina University is and has always been a dream school for many students including myself. I have grown up hearing about the University and it is nothing short of spectacular. Many family members of mine have attended East Carolina, and I have always pictured myself at this school. It would be an honor to be a pirate. Throughout high school I have struggled in Science and Math. When I first heard about Berry College, I thought it was just another school in Georgia. My friend told me about it and I thought maybe I should look into it. I put it aside for some time until I saw a picture of this beautiful building. I was taken away by the architecture so I looked up the building and realized it was part of Berry College. I feel like in that moment, I felt in love with the surroundings of the school. I looked more into it and saw that it had everything I was looking for. The environment, the classes, and the activities, it was just perfect. So I have to say that I'm attracted to the feel of the campus and the never ending size. I know what I see it's only on the outside, but I can't wait to see what it has to offer inside.

1. What experience do you like talking about the most? What has been the most interesting, intriguing, and exciting part of your life- why, and what did you learn from it?

HELLO GUYS!!! I have something veryyyyyyyy important to tell you! After all of my stressing about FAFSA ( Free Application Federal Student Aid) , Colleges, and Transportation, I decided to further my education at Rowan University. It took me a long time to make this decision because this wasn’t my first choice! My first choice/ dream school was LIU Brooklyn ( Long Island University) in Brooklyn, New York. I was recently accepted there and planned on attending there, but their out-of-state tuition was extremely high! Their tuition was $33,000 a year and poor black man like myself, cannot afford it. I really loved LIU because it's a great school, beautiful campus, and most of all, it's in New York. I had my whole planned before it even started,

Twenty-six years ago. I began the quest to find the perfect college. As I drove down the driveway of Bay Path College, I knew this was the college I was going to attend. I was drawn to the rural setting, the beautiful campus and the small academic community. My intent for life after high school was to get my associates degree, earn some money, then begin working toward my bachelor degree. In retrospect, I did not possess the confidence or drive needed to be a good student. I struggled for the next couple of years to earn my Associates degree, however was apprehensive to commit to the time or expense it would take to continue my education. My decision to attend Trinity Valley Community College was influenced by two primary objectives. One was to conserve funds, as this is one of the most useful features of community colleges. The second objective was to maintain a 4.0 GPA. This is where I failed.

I stood in front of my vanity mirror as I did every morning, a bad but an ineluctable habit of mine. I traced my scar from my eyebrow to my cheekbone with my finger. I suppose most people see scars as a sign of survivor, but all I ever saw was my weakness. While Anne Arundel Community College is one of the most accredited community colleges in Maryland, I aspire to fulfill my academic needs elsewhere.  The main reason I had to enroll at AACC was because I was diagnosed with brain cancer in February of 2016, this forced me to stay near Johns Hopkins Hospital to receive treatment. As fall approached my treatments became frequent and daunting. Never mind the fact that I was missing class that I was on the verge of failing, I felt depressed. Being a community college, AACC cannot provide me with an adequate college experience. Here I can't cheer on the football team or spend late nights in the library studying. My time at Boston College has opened up my eyes to various parts of the country and populations that I had not previously been exposed to and this has greatly shaped how I envision my medical career to be 10 years from now. At this point in the future I will still be starting out, getting the hang of things, learning what I am best at, what I need to improve on, and what I am most passionate about. As of right now, I imagine that 10 years from now I will be a general practitioner in an area of the country with limited access to medical care. This might mean in the mountains of West Virginia, a small town in Mississippi, or a secluded area in Alaska. During Spring 2015 term, I withdrew from Middlebury College due to severe thyroid infection. I had contracted the illness during Fall 2014 academic term, but my doctors, both personal and emergency, failed to understand its severe nature. So, I was cleared to go back to school for the spring term. Unfortunately for me, however, I was readmitted to Porter Hospital in Middlebury within weeks. My illness prevented me from attending classes, fulfilling my duties as a student assistant, and made me severely weak. Hence, upon pressure from the doctors and my family, I withdrew from the college and treated my illness during the spring

These past four years have been a wonderful experience. I have learned, grown and matured into the woman I am today because of the lessons and talks I have had inside these four walls of Dillard University. The beginning of my senior year I was terrified, because I knew what I wanted to do but I did not want to fail at it. I was so afraid of failing, I did not allow myself to take risks and step out on faith. The fear of failing kept me from seeing the positive side of things and that crippled me. I had a conversation with Mr. Clark and he told me I could not fail if I didn’t try and that has stuck with me. He pushed and put a lot of pressure on me to apply to graduate school. All my life I have been inspired by powerful women. My mother who was never able to achieve an education has always motivated and taught me to go after my dreams. I believe that at Wellesley I can learn from women who have overcome obstacles and have inspired other young girls to become so much more than what society would like them to be. I know that Wellesley is a place where I will be able to make my mother proud and show her that I represent one of the most celebrated women’s college in the world. I would not just be going to Wellesley for myself, but also for my mother and for all the other women in my ancestry that never got to see who they could have become or where they could have ended up if they had the same choices and opportunities
