While studying not only educational psychology, but general psychology as well, students are taught that the main things that predestine what a child will be like are family, friends, social media, and schooling. While observing a friend of mine, Shanae, and her mom, Char, these four things most definitely had consequences in how Shanae came to be the way she is and how her mother adapted to the changes. Shanae’s family seems to be the typical all-American family with two happily married parents and one older sister. Shanae and her sister have lived their entire lives in Aberdeen, and now continue to do so as they both go to Northern State University. It is interesting that Char and her husband decided to only have two children as Char is an only child and her husband has 18 siblings, but then again, the typical American family is only two children. Char, ever since the girls were little, was able to not always have to work, and when she did have a job, she seemed to be self-employed so she could choose to take days off to spend with her daughters if necessary whereas her husband has always worked full-time. But they have always been able to support their family, and allowed the girls to have many opportunities with the 1 to almost 1 and ½ incomes that they have had. After Char’s father passed away, Shanae’s father built a house next door to theirs for Char’s mother to live in. Ever since then, she has become a extremly present member of their family and daily
Flashback to 2006, it’s the midst of fall and recess have just begun. The red and whites of the Danish flag blows in the cool wind and inside a girl from second grade puts on her cozy red coat, anticipating the joy of playing in the colorful falling leaves and inhaling the crisp autumn air, but before opening the door, a boy approaches her and says “Your boots are ugly.” The girl takes a second to think and then replies the boy with a cold “thank you,” she then proceeds to go on with a smile on her face, as if nothing had just happened to her. This girl with the rather unconventional reply was me, and the reason this story is so significant is not necessarily due to what an observer would have witnessed that day, but instead the thinking that led me to do what I did.
My entire life I have always been on the search of a career that would fit my persona, fit who I truly am, and to become someone who will constantly have the ability to help people through their difficult problems that they face. Throughout my life I have been deemed the type of person that people felt comfortable coming to with their problems. Maybe people feel this way because they sense that I have a sympathetic ear? Well, all I can say is that human behavior has always seemed interesting to me and that is probably why I made the decision to go down the psychology career pathway.
I am very interested in the School Psychology program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I have a strong educational background and a number of professional and educational experiences, which I feel have prepared me for this program. I enjoy working with children and developing strong rapport with parents and co-workers. I learned about the graduate program with great interest because I would like to offer my skills in the area of psychology to meet students’ psychological needs.

Multiple years of research and field experience as well as my undergraduate coursework in Psychology, Counseling, and General Education has provided me with ample skills to be successful at the graduate level in the School Psychology program offered at Francis Marion University. Working within the school system with students with mental health needs and exceptionalities has been a dream of mine since I was in high school. I am confident the School Psychology program at Francis Marion University will provide me with the skill set needed to make my dream a reality and become the best School Psychologist I can be.
“It takes a village to raise a child.” I never quite understood that saying when I was growing up, but my experiences teaching and working in school settings have showed me how true it really is. Obtaining a degree in school psychology will allow me to give the support that students, families and educators need to ensure that every student will thrive.
‘According to the American sociologist Talcott Parsons, the family’s two main functions are primary socialization and personality stabilization. Primary socialization is the process by which children lean the cultural norms of the society into which they are born. Because this happens during the early years of childhood, the family is the most important arena for the development of the human personality. Personality stabilization refers to
I am passionate about keeping black youth out of the justice system, and I believe school psychologists are perfectly situated to disrupt the system. This is why I’m applying to school psychology program. Furthermore, that passion informs my desire to study alternatives to suspension and expulsion with Dr. Pamela Fenning and addressing trauma in schools with Dr. Rosario Pesce. I think that finding alternatives to suspension and expulsion would help prevent students from dropping out of school by ensuring that they do not unnecessarily miss any in-class time. And addressing trauma in schools continues to be important as mass shootings continue to become more commonplace, especially in Chicago.
Family is the first structure that one becomes a part of and it has a huge impact on people’s life. Parents play an important part on a child’s development. Jess’s family had a significant impact on Jess’s emotional state. Hir parents did not give the love that a child would require from the beginning. Leslie Feinberg states, “My mother admitted she was afraid to touch me, except to pin on a diaper or stick a bottle in my mouth” (Feinberg 14). They treated hir as ze was different (?) .Another significant experience that Jess had in hir childhood was when
Psychology has always fascinated me, learning about classical conditioning (Ivan Pavlov), personality the id, ego, and superego (Sigmund Freud), were all interesting subjects in my high school introduction to psychology class. This subject was very interesting that it planted a desire that I had never forgotten, the desire of wanting to be a psychologist. The dysfunctional home environment in which I grew up also played a role in my decision. Although, I presently I hold a BA in Information Systems, I decided to return to school for my masters in psychology, since it was my first love. Choosing clinical psychology with a specialization in forensic was an easy decision, I love psychology and learning about the law of our country and the United Kingdom. One of my favorite past times is watching television shows old and new alike, such as Perry Mason, The Good Wife on CBS, Law and Order/Special Victim Unit on NBC, and Damages on Netflix. Television shows in the United States and the United Kingdom are not my only pass time, I love to cook, growing up in a Jamaican household undoubtedly allowed me the ability to learn to cook, some of their main dishes such as ackee and salt/cod fish, escovitch fish, curry chicken and much more. My mother also taught me to cook Italian dishes, and within the last three years I’ve learned to bake challah bread. The field of psychology is important to because I hope to comprehend violence
There are many different kinds of ways that people and animals learn. People can adjust the way they learn to the different situations in which they are learning and what they have to learn. One form of learning is known as conditioning. Conditioning emphasises the relationship between stimuli and responses. The two types of conditioning found are Classical conditioning and Operant conditioning. Learning may occur in different ways. Psychologists have distinguished between different types of learning, these being Observational Learning and Insight Learning.
The codes that a psychology professional must follow when developing a psychology program include (Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility). This code makes sure that psychologists uphold their professional standards of conduct while consulting, collaborating, and turning to other professionals to assist the best interests of students or other people they work with. This code also clarifies a psychologist’s professional role and obligations, while accepting appropriate responsibility for their behavior, and seek to manage any disagreements or conflicts of interest. Another standard/ code that must be followed is (5.03 Descriptions of Workshops and Non-Degree-Granting Educational Programs). This standard is implemented by establishing psychology programs that contribute relevant knowledge along with genuine experiences. There is requirement that need to be met within the program such as incorporating course requirements that satisfy or fulfill standards that are relevant to the field that your psychology program is based on. “Psychologists are responsible for announcements, catalogs, brochures, or advertisements describing workshops, seminars, or other non-degree-granting educational programs” (Fisher, 2013, p.346). Another standard that a psychology professional must follow is (Education and Training- 7.02 Descriptions of Education and Training Programs). Following this
I never fully realized the impact a person’s childhood and upbringing has on the type of human they become later on in life. Having a robust and positive support system can help push a developing child in the right direction and aid in their development into their full potential. With two other siblings, my parents did their best to provide us with the resources needed to develop into functional members of the community. Growing up in a household of seven is just as hectic as one would imagine. With busy parents, my siblings and I rarely got time to interact with our parent figures.
At some point in your life, did you ever wonder how you became the person you are today? What factors might have had an influence in your life to how you behave in society? Developmental Psychology helped me figure out how events in my life molded me into the young adult I am today and helped discover the themes that affected my life. In this paper, I will be focusing on divorce, my personality, premature births, and how I struggled in my academics. I will be explaining this journey throughout these four themes: family influences, personality development, physical development, and cognitive development.
One of the more popular areas of psychology is Educational Psychology. Educational Psychology can be explained several ways. The idea is to study theories and concepts from different parts of psychology and apply them in educational settings. These educational settings may occur in different school settings such as preschool. The goal of educational psychology is to create a positive student-teacher relationship. Educational psychology uses five different types of psychology, behavioral, cognitive, developmental, and social cognitive, and constructivist in this research paper I will be briefly discussing each type of psychology listed above.
