As I sit here in the midst of the night pondering on all the things that have went wrong in my past. My priorities have been twisted and my vision has been obstructed; the truth hurt way too much to handle and when the real world hit me I was lost. Everything I had worked for was gone and the person I loved most was nowhere to be found -- it was just me, myself, and my notebook. My thoughts tended to unravel when they flowed in-between my fingers, the days flew by when I wrote about them and the weight from my shoulders were lifted off. This was therapy and my introspective journey had begun. Leading up to this point, my life was in disarray and I felt that I needed to take this time to reflect on my wrong doings, set my priorities straight, shift my perspective, and focus on my education in order for me to pursue the finer things in life.
My life was not a complete disaster, because I did have a good life overall. During my high school years, I attended

Doing enough to just simply get by and pass was my only concern, but whenever I picked up a psychology textbook and began to understand the reason behind certain aspects of life and the function of certain parts of the brain, I became fascinated with all of the things I missed out on life. A new goal was set for myself to pursue a higher education once my life was settled back in and I was comfortable with where I was at. Reading the newspaper allowed me to catch up on current events and look into them more if they gained my interest. Solitude became comfortable to me and being alone started to feel like home I was so caught up on my writing and gaining knowledge that it was my motivation to push harder and become a better version of myself. Drinking coffee all day and spending hours in my room studying was fun to me and gave me a
I was blessed to be born to a Cuban mother and Mexican father, living in Miami I've been able to embrace both cultures. I usually speak in Spanish with my friends and classmates and I've been exposed to a variety of cultures in my community. Interacting with students from different backgrounds has been eye opening for me, especially the opportunities I've had to travel. Last year I was selected by Honors College to learn about the issues going on globally in Austria and Germany. In Salzburg, I had the honor of speaking with professors from the University of Salzburg, which showed me how most Europeans view the world. It was a culture shock seeing how some Austrians saw the United States and their thoughts on taxes. This experience pushed me
I took anatomy and physiology course to get a better understanding about the human body. I became a teachers assistance in biochemistry course which helped me solidified the chemical and biological pathways in our body. I started volunteering at copper point church which better helped me with my communication skills and increased my sense of belonging in New Mexico. I gained more clinical experience by continuing shadowing at Innovage. i started working at highland compounding pharmacy which also gave me a different experience than retail pharmacy. I gain more knowledge about compounded medications and their use. I became the DAT( Disaster Action Team) responder for the night shift at red cross. I started volunteering at joy junction to help
Most of my life has been centered around IU – football games, basketball games, yearly trips, meeting Tom Crean (twice, while he was still coaching), and more recently, visiting my two older sisters currently attending IU Bloomington. So as you can tell, I’ve had a lot of influence towards Indiana University, however, I’m proud to say it was my own decision to apply because I know this University is so special.
Lately, I have been in search of a new beginning; one that will provide comfort, resources, and a supportive environment. In the recent past, I have begun to feel trapped - experiencing unhealthy amounts of stress, anxiety and discomfort. The institution, and the environment where I reside, matriculate and carry out day-to-day activities has been unsatisfactory in regards to my needs. To my understanding, a positive environment will facilitate positive experiences. I have been working constantly, and unrelentingly, searching for solutions, developments, advancements and innovations in hopes of aiding the ever-advancing human race. By nature, I am indefinitely curious, and so I am continuously researching subjects that I do not understand, which leaves me constantly contemplating the world around me. I
As a high school freshman, I quickly realized how easy it was to turn in minimal work and to get a decent grade. I thought that I had so much time throughout my time in high school that getting C's and D's wouldn't impact me as I approached my later years in high school. I soon realized how detrimental my actions were as I was now a senior applying to 4-year colleges. As I saw all of my friends get into the colleges they applied to, I didn't get accepted into any. My subpar GPA and ACT scores held me back. As I settled for a community college in Fort Collins, I only wish I had the chance to go back and rewrite all the mistakes I had made throughout my high school days. I didn’t take high school seriously, I ditched classes, turned in subpar
Throughout the last four weeks of participating in this course, I have not only been revised of things, I have also learned a lot. One of the most important things I have learned would be understanding the clear writing skills and be concise with citing scholarly sources and outside research. Adapting to new ways to develop clear writing material has been an eye opener for me. What I thought I knew about writing wasn't anything compared to what I have learned throughout these last four weeks.
Before I became a student at BCCC I was attending CCBC the college was awesome my field of study was Nursing. I left the college because I needed to be close to my grandmother because she had some illnesses going at the time. My main focus when I attended BCCC was to get all of my pre-requisites done so I could attend the Nursing Program. When I started classes in fall 2011 I started during well, but I fell short in some of the classes because of appointments I had to attend with my grandmother. Fall 2011 I received an F in English 200 and a D in Math 107. I knew this would affect my GPA. So I said to myself, maybe I should take a break and I had a long talk with my grandmother. She told me to make sure I focus on school and she will be fine. So spring
When I am not working at my grocery store, I coach a high school bowling team. I have been bowling for many years and coaching for two. Since I took over the team, we have won back-to- back state championships. However, with any sport comes strategic thinking between the head coach and his assistants. Before every match, I and my assistant coach have to create a line-up that obtains stressful strategic thinking. The way bowling matches work is that we have a team of six bowlers and each bowler is matched up against their opponent on the other team. If that person wins their game, they get a point. The most points at the end of the match wins the match. So, when writing my lineup, I have to determine which players to match up to the other team’s players. I could put my strongest player against their strongest player and maybe get a point, or I can put my strongest player against their weakest players and guarantee a point. Also, I could mix up my lineup and place the bowlers in any lineup.
Business writing has been quite refreshing and rewarding for me, expanding my ability to write professionally. I have learned the different methods for business writing, such as resume and interview tips, proof reading for 30 minutes or so, and the different forms of correspondence writing. Also, we study how to write effectively without being excessively long, getting right to the point. Even being able to update my resume and cover letter, and writing memos for work is much better.
When it comes to reading for information, I tend to go back and forth to the scuba diver and a guy on a Jet Ski. It depends on what I am reading per say, if I find what I am reading interesting then I read more in depth rather than something I find unappealing. Generally speaking, when I look for information for a given assignment, I tend to ‘treasure hunt’ for information and facts I believe are relevant to the topic I am assigned to. I do not give myself the time to actually dive into readings if I am looking for specific information. The reason to why I do this is because I must find information quickly in order to start the writing process and finish the given assignment. On the other hand, when I read something for pleasure, I take
This SWOT analysis was soul-bearing in a way, and it gave me a perspective I did not have at the beginning of this exercise. As I started to receive responses some observations I understood, but others I was surprised how others viewed me, but I understood a key to development is the ability to realize your own abilities, behaviors, and evolve. Throughout my time in the college student development program, I have begun to understand that for myself, and the students I serve the key to development is a reflective mindset. In this perspective, I must have the ability to understand my own strengths, weaknesses, and adjust my own mannerisms. Throughout my graduate degree, I have been able to obtain reflection on my past, which presented me
At the start of the school year, I was not 100% confident that my partners and I could get the product done in time. Each one of us was determined to do great work, but the tasks seemed very advanced. Furthermore, we are a silly group of guys who enjoy one another's company maybe a little too much. I was scared that we were going to get frustrated with the complex research, coding, wiring, design, and building required to make our smart mirror and color sensor work as a cohesive unit. But, as we started working to tackle the technology behind our product, I realized that we could actually do it. Every member became dedicated to the work asked of them and even through the constant banter and joking, we trusted one another to get things done when they needed to be done. We each worked on the idea that we could not let our teammates down and that forced us to put in a significant amount of effort. Not a single class was dull this year because of the friendship I have with my teammates and I truly enjoyed their company. I do not believe our product would be as successful had it not been for the positive environment we created. And, in the end, after months of hard work and a strong finish in the last two months, we completed the MatchMaker. The MatchMaker is by far the best creation I have made in this class and probably in my whole life. It required me to go out of my comfort zone and direct myself to designate specific time frames to get little pieces of the larger
Throughout the semester we have written several different types of essays. Those being informing essays, essays with research, and essays about personal experiences. For me, half of the battle was choosing the topic. After choosing the topic and writing a rough draft we most times would have a peer review. The peer review helped me to see my classmate’s ideas and opinions about my work. Taking their suggestions helped improve my paper in the end. I also used the paper checks to see how I was doing with my paper. Over the semester I have improved on several things. These being vocabulary, over explaining myself, and grammar. However, there are some things that I haven’t improved on but would like to.
The age 19 is a very strange time in my life. Technically, I am considered an adult, but in reality it is more of an awkward middle ground between teen hood and being a real life adult. Not yet feeling the full effect of 20 and the responsibilities that follow have not sunk in yet. Everyone around me says “live it up it’s our last year to be ignorant!”, and being in college it seems like all that matters is who can shotgun a beer the fastest at a party or how many people someone slept with. There seems to be a lack of morality in college. This topic morality and making ethical choices between right and wrong in college is the biggest personal struggle for me as I continue stumbling my way through college.
Throughout my first semester of college I have learned many new things about the writing process. One thing that I have learned is how to make strategic composing decisions that consider the specific audiences and purposes for which most university students write. During this semester I have made quite a few composing decisions to help better my writing for my classmates understanding. As a writer, I have had to make a few composing decisions that have influenced my writing in a good way. For this class, whether my decisions are based on word choice, or writing style, these decisions have helped shape me into a better writer. In our most recent essay for this course, I choose a certain writing process that would help me convey my writing. Also, throughout this semester, I have learned that I am not allowed to use contractions, so in regards to that, I have been moved to better my writings in ways that I can use more in-depth vocabulary words that will help convey my points to readers.
