Personal Statement: A Career As A Social Worker

I decided to apply to the social work master because I have encountered a lot of different experiences, problems, and achievements over the past four years. Similarly, I have always had a deep desire for helping others in a caring and supportive way. I faced many obstacles through my adolescent years such as: having an eating disorder, self-harm, and depression. After going through therapy, I realized that I wanted to help young people to overcome problems and to be able to help them to move forward in life. I want to make them comprehend that change is possible as long as the person want it.

In the past 34 years of my life I have had a wide arrange of experiences that have brought me to the decision to pursue a Master’s in Social Work degree. The earliest experience occurred when I was in elementary school, my Mom made the decision to go to college and after almost eight years and a lot of hard work she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Social Work. This experience inspired me in my own life to work hard and find something you love doing. She taught me the importance of helping others and seeking out justice for people who are less fortunate.

I am applying for the Social Work Master's Degree because primarily making a difference in people’s lives is the most important aspect of a future career to me, than any other. By being at your College and qualifying as a social worker, I believe I can achieve this and become a supportive and caring member. While growing up, I have gained some insight into mental health when I looked after my 92 year old great grandmother. All the difficulties and challenges she had with eating and remembering things. I would like to gain further knowledge on this. Another family member had a drug and alcohol addiction and I got to witness how it affected his mental health and his interaction with others. These personal experiences inspired me to further the desire to become a social worker.

I recently graduated from Barry University with my MSW and is looking to work for a company that will help me to continue to improve my skills as a clinical social worker. I have always been passionate about helping people and bringing positive changes in the world, which has led me to want me to become a social worker. I envision myself to work with the population of children and individuals with both physical and intellectual disabilities. More specifically, I am keen on working with children with mild to severe forms of disability in the school system. The reason for that is because I found that both my elementary and high schools, students with special challenges do not always receive the most effective support that they need in order to be able to thrive in their school environment. In human services there are many jobs that someone can work that uses their knowledge or skills. I never wanted to be a social worker, and in college had to change my major my junior year due to unforeseen circumstances. During that time I was stressed and didn’t know what to do, so I decided to major in psychology and become a social worker to help those who have disabilities. I have had many different experiences that helped me determine what I wanted to do when I graduated.

As an adolescent growing up I saw my mother always in school for social work or even psychology. I never really understood what it meant to be a social worker until Hurricane Katrina occurred. After the storm, my mother took me to see the people that were suffering from the storm. I began asking my mother why isn’t anyone helping and what will happen to them. She then began to explain to me the best she could that the victims of Katrina were going to need someone there to help them through the tragic incident.

At an early age, everybody does not know what they would like to be in life. Some of us need time to discover our gift, passion or destiny. After two careers and struggling the idea of what to do my remaining time on earth, the decision was made to start a third career, this time it would geared toward building a better place to rear my children.

Growing up my grandmother always told me to “Never be afraid to do what is right.” This is something that I live by growing up and what lead me to want to be in the helping profession. My grandmother was not a social worker, but she was very active in her community and she advocated and provided support for the community. She did exactly what a social worker would do. Growing up I wanted to have a career where I would be making a difference in others’ lives and “do what is right”.

I chose Social Work over other professions at a very young age. I was 8 years old when I decided I wanted to be a Social Worker. Even when I was 8 years old I could see the difference social workers make in others’ lives. To me social workers make a bigger difference in lives than any other helping profession. We go in and help with the deep issues in others’ lives. We don’t just fix the surfaces problems, we go deep and fix those. Doctors can only fix the issues that the clients come in with, if a child who lives in an abusive home comes in with a bad burn they can only fix the burn and call a hotline. When a social worker goes in and fixes the abusive home problem the child is in and give them a better environment. The doctor is just fixing that burn temporary when social workers are

I thought about a social worker because all of my life I helped people that were just the person I was. It didn't matter if I didn't really want to, I just couldn't walk away without helping them. I am a lot of people go to person for assignments, Relationship, and health. Even If I felt like I couldn't help them or there wasn't anything I could do I would still help them.With me being as positive and Helpful Led me to a lot of accomplishments in my life and at school.At my high school Cornerstone Health + technology high school I am a member of a school organization called Peer Leaders. We help all students succeed and prepare for college. This year since I am a senior I helped my senior class apply for colleges and scholarships. Also, let them know how important it is to do the FAFSA and encouraged them to do it. I am also a member of the national honor society which requires me to stay on top of my school work and out of trouble also to help my peers do the same and make my school a fun and safe environment by organizing

My current job with 911 dispatch here in Pennington County is an eye opener to the socioeconomic problems our community faces, and has provided me with new insights to become a better social worker. The reason I am leaving dispatch if hired with Department of Social Services is so I can take helping those in need a step further and try and make an impact on the socioeconomic struggle our community sees.

When entering the social work field, one has many different options on what type to become. The largest division of social work is child welfare. These workers deal with children and their wellbeing. In some cases they handle acts of abuse and neglect that result in dealing with foster families. The second most common division of social work in family services. A family services social worker has to work with marriages, parent to child communications and overall family life. In addition to family social workers, there are school social workers that help kids who are having hard times in school, deal with bullies, and intervene on behalf of bullying victims. Mental health and substance abuse is another type of social worker. People in this specific profession assist clients with mental and emotional difficulties, along with alcohol/drug abuse. Being a Social Worker is something that has stuck with me since I was twelve. I grew a passion to help others, and my aunt’s foster kids have taught me so much over the years, I have fell in love with the work that a social worker does, as I watch and learn from the workers that my aunt deals with. There are many different duties as a social worker. You will be working with a great variety of people. There will be times when you will be working with the older adults and all the way down to very young children. These people will all have different backgrounds and different stories. Some may be disabled, homeless, addicts, or they may have health conditions that may make your work harder. One of the tasks that you will have to complete will be sitting down with the family and gathering information about their problems and their situations. It is important that you give your attention to this family and comfort them when the situation calls for you to do so. (Dawson). All of these duties may require more of your time and energy which can be physically and emotionally draining.
