Personal Statement: A Career In Nursing

Nursing is the profession of providing care, comfort, compassionate, and love for the sick and disabled. Nursing is also the development of health and the ability to prevent illness and injury. With that being said, nursing has always had an impact on my life and having a desire to help others. My decision to pursue a Bachelor degree of Science in Nursing started with my mother sharing her nursing experiences which persuaded me to make this life choice. The second reason I have decided to pursue a career in nursing is the growing supply and demand in this field, and the compensation continues to increase especially with continuing education.

Learning is not always isolated to a classroom. My main purpose for choosing this profession is from my personal life experiences I have had with assisting with home health care of my family members. Years have passed since observing my mother providing care to the elders at her job. Real life experiences happened and my 84 year old grandmother had fallen and broke her pelvis and hip. She was on dialysis three days a week and had multiple other health issues. During that time her health began to decline. Placing my grandmother in a nursing home was never an option because the family wanted to care for her at home. At this time in my life, I knew in order to keep my grandmother at home I would need to help with her care. I learned from my mother and the home health nurses how to do wound care, administrator medication to a mild dementia patient, assist with ambulation, and other activities of daily living for my love one. It was a very heart felt moment to see my grandmother decline, but it helped me become a stronger health care provider. I want to be that amazing nurse that my mother is and was to my grandmother. I want to give others what was so generously given to my grandmother and premature cousin, which was good quality of care. I want to make a difference in someone’s life. Assisting with the health care of my family has allowed me to understand the human body in a more insightful way and the ability to utilize more critical thinking. So, I have decided to expand my desire of nursing by pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in this major. I have chosen Middle Georgia State University to obtain
