Personal Statement: A Career In Nursing

As a course of life, people are born, raised, and go to school until the time comes where they need to make a decision about their career. In fact, most careers have one common theme among them---Help or give back to community and society. I for one have chosen a career in nursing to help people and give back to my community. Other than the fact that I want to help people, a career in nursing will expand my horizons, give me career opportunities, and job satisfaction.

I originally developed an interest in the field of nursing when I saw the desperate need that people have for education on the responsibility they have to look after their own health and the health of persons entrusted to their care. People who haven’t been educated and are in need of help and assistance dearly need this help and God has entrusted us with the same task he gave to Adam ‘“... have dominion over... every living thing that moves upon the earth.”’ and with dominion comes the responsibility to care for those entrusted to you. Graduating this year from high school is going to be a major turning point in my life where important decisions will be made. Even if I am ready or not decisions will be made and new obstacles will come my way especially when it comes to college. My choice of attending college stems from me wanting to earn a good education and successful job. I plan on furthering my education in nursing. My goal is to learn more about nursing and the medical field that way I can become a Registered Nurse and eventually work with moms’ and babies in labor and delivery.

All my life nurses have surrounded me. My mother was diagnosed with Hodgkin Disease while I was in the womb. She spent most of her early motherhood life in a Galveston, TX hospital. I also, in 2006 was diagnosed with cervical cancer and was given the proper care to battle the cancer and become a survivor. The flourishing of my desire for nursing was also very clear when I experienced how to care for another person. My cousin who has different disabilities has been ill since an infant. All her life I have cared for her when I could and met numerous of nurses who are by her side twenty-four seven. The surrounding of nurses and their environment that I have been exposed to, has assured me that this desire I have to further my education in this pathway is the right choice. I hope to attain the proper education to gain closeness to the people in my community through this profession that I have a strong desire for.

Nursing is more than just simply a career. Nursing is a calling from a higher power. I chose to be a nurse for several different reasons. My uncle was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in (date). The care and compassion shown to my uncle put nursing in another perspective for me. The feelings of care and comfort my family received during this tragic time had a strong impact on my decision to become a nurse. I decided that I wanted to make the lives of sick individuals, as well as their families, less stressful. I decided that I wanted to become a nurse.

I believe this about nursing, it is not just a profession but merging of passionate and holistic care. My desire to become a nurse sprouted when I went for a mission trip to a Leprosy Hospital near my home town in India. There was still social stigma against leprosy and so called “Leprosy Sanatorium” was isolated from rest of the world with a huge wall. I remember carrying a bag of clothes collected by my mother for the patients there. I was deeply touched by the smile and gratitude patients showed to the nurses caring for them and cleaning their wounds. That is when I decided that I want to become a nurse. Another reason for my decision to become a nurse is my brother, who is also a nurse. His experiences and stories from hospital inspired me and made me realize that nursing is truly for me. I joined one of the prestigious Universities in India for my BSN through merit and scholarship and I graduated at the top of my class. After graduation I worked in various acute care settings and also as a clinical instructor in India.

A nurse is a person that is trained to advocate health, prevent illness, and care for ill or disabled person. My desire to become a nurse started at a young age and from then on my desire to be a nurse has only grown. I grew up around the healthcare field most of my life because my grandmother and mother were both nurses. In 2011, my father was diagnosed with cancer. I went to the hospital every day to see him. When my father passed away it inspired me to be a nurse even more. I want to help people so they won’t have to go through what my father went through or so children won’t have to feel how I felt. When people hear the word “nurse” it paints a positive image in most of our minds. Nurses are people who encourage others to live a healthy lifestyle and care for the sick. Equally important they provide direct health care for each patients. I didn't just wake up one morning and decided that i was going to become a nurse it took time. Choosing nursing as profession has been a mission of mine since I was in elementary school when my father had his colostomy surgery. Ever since his surgery, my father had a tough recovery which involved the hospital as his second home for a couple of years and him rarely at home. In those years, I saw how the nurses went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that not only my father was well taken care of and comfortable during his recovery, but his family as well. Since then I have wanted and now want to become a nurse so I can dispense comfort, compassion, and care to the patients and their loved ones during the process of recovery. As a nurse we encompass so many different responsibilities into the daily care of patients. My decision to pursue an education in nursing was solidified after my wife’s nursing experiences in providing health care within our community and from a medical mission trip she took part in caring for the indigent population in Honduras. I was inspired by her stories of serving patients who had limited to no healthcare access in a third world country. I was also moved by how a nursing education can go far beyond that of a job description and take you on journeys across the world to help those who are in desperate need. I knew that I also wanted to share those experiences with her and gain the knowledge and skill set that she acquired from a nursing program.
