Welding Both Jobs Together When I go to work, I punch a time clock at Maxwell Trailers and Pick-up Accessories, Inc. At the location in Mexico, Missouri, Maxwell’s employees manufacture trailers and truck beds, but I work in the shop at the Maxwell’s in Columbia. The one where I work has lots of customers in and out all day because it has a store that sells trailers, truck beds and accessories. The welding and mechanical shop where I, along with my fellow employees, install any of the items that Maxwell’s sell to customers is on the back of the building. I like the work I do at Maxwell’s, but my dream job is a self-employed cattle and crop farmer. The job I have now at Maxwell’s involves welding and wrench work to install truck accessories, such as special bumpers, running boards, and pick-up covers. A typical day at work in my present job would be to spend a lot of time welding to install a variety of products. My favorite welding project at Maxwell’s is putting on truck beds. I think the reason I like installing truck beds is because I get to use a lot of different welding materials and techniques, and it takes some experience and talent to get it just right. In my dream job, as a farmer, there will be much of the same type of welding and wrench work. Most of it will be for maintenance on machinery or when that machinery breaks down. In the job which I work now, the shop-boss makes a weekly schedule. He can schedule me to work anytime when the shop is open, and I am not in class. In my dream job, I will make my own schedule. In many ways, it will be more flexible than Maxwell’s schedules, but in farming schedules are dictated by many variables, such as weather, seasons, and calving. Just because I schedule myself to go to a ballgame, for example, if a cow is having trouble calving, I cannot just say, “Wait until tomorrow because I am scheduled off today.” That would be ridiculous. As a farmer, my personal schedule will have to be flexible depending on all those many variables. In my present job, I work part-time, usually less than twenty hours per week. In my dream job, I will often work more than forty hours per week, but there will be very few times of the year that I may work less than
