The emotion of hope is important because life is uncertain. Factors such as wealth, education and opportunity may play a role in dividing people into different social categories, but no amount of privilege or advantage can shield a person from disappointment, pain, loss or death. These are universal adversities for all humankind. The word hope can be defined in different ways. Many religious people think of hope as a virtue, along with faith and love. Survivors of trauma often credit hope as the inspiration that kept them going. A realists may say that hope is nothing more than wishful thinking. No matter how it is defined, whether it is a belief or a feeling, hope is the idea of something bigger than oneself. The application of hope can …show more content…
I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done” (p. 317). As Dennis Sykes explains in his article, Phoenix had lived long enough to understand the ways in which she was viewed by society. If the hunter’s reference to his gun was an attempt to intimidate the old woman, he is not successful (Sykes 152). She has survived too many years in the face of discrimination to be quickly frightened. Likewise, she isn’t easily offended. Upon arrival at the hospital where she hopes to get the medication, she is greeted with more stereotypical opinion when the attendant at the desk greets her by saying, “A charity case, I suppose” (Welty 318). Phoenix has likely grown accustomed to society looking down on her due to the color of her skin or her lack of education. However, Phoenix is a shining example that not everything is as it appears to be. Elaine Orr points out that “On the one hand, the attendant reads her blackness as meaning she requires charity, on the other hand, … Phoenix’s story is about charity” (Orr 67). Much like the ancestors of Maya Angelou, Phoenix has chosen to embrace hope despite the cruel truths of racism. In the same way that hope has colored the past, optimism and positive thinking has the ability to affect present situations. When enduring struggles or facing fears, hope can provide feelings of comfort. It can be used as a coping mechanism. Maya Angelou relates a tone of satisfaction when she weighs the conditions of her life
Annie was very successful in her life. The story, "New Directions", by Maya Angelou, it states that Annie did many things for her family. She was successful by working hard at night, walked everywhere so she could sell pies and earn money, and making a store where people could buy her items.
An example of how hope can affect a nation is the Christchurch earthquakes in New Zealand. IN September 2010 Christchurch was struck by a strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, leaving thousands of residents with injuries, without homes and hundreds of casualties. These people demonstrated hope, as although the region is still recovering and receiving numerous after shocks weekly, they still are remaining positive and hopeful. As a consequence of the people of Christchurch’s hope, people all around the world and New Zealand are wiling to give aid to e people affected by the earthquakes . Also because of Christchurch residents hope that the earthquakes will stop, the majority of them have chosen to stay in the region and help recover their city. With hope comes positivity. Although the people of Christchurch have been affected terribly by the earthquakes they are still positive because of their hope. This shows how hope can be a good and important thing for nations today to have.
Hope creates possibilities. Because when your positive around you it spreads hope. For instance, In the book Fever 1793, the character Eliza spreads hope to Mattie. Eliza says that everything will be okay and things will get better and then at bush hill Eliza works with the sick people at bush hill who have the fever. But Eliza has to take care of the kids, so Mattie does that for
In the poem ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou, the poet uses repetition, metaphors and similes to express to her audience about how she has overcome racism in her life through demonstrating a strong, proud and defiant attitude to inspire others.
Eudora Welty wrote this story in 1941, a time in America where although African Americans were free, they were still treated as a lesser race by the whites. Phoenix tells the hunter that she is headed to town because “the time come around.” (290) The hunter replies, “I know you old colored people! Wouldn’t miss going to town to see Santa Claus!” The white hunter is making a stereotype that colored people go to town during winter to see Santa Claus, when in fact the nature of Phoenix’s travel is different. Lastly, before they part ways, the hunter points his gun directly at Phoenix, and asks if the gun does not scare her. She responds, “No sir. I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done.” Since Welty describes Phoenix as being very old, then it is safe to assume that Phoenix lived during a time where black oppression was at its highest. Therefore, since she has through a lot during her days, then having a gun pointed at her does not seem to impact her in any way.
What is hope? According to Webster’s Dictionary (Agnes & Laird, 1996), the noun hope is defined as “an optimistic attitude of mind based on an expectation of positive outcomes related to events and circumstances in one 's life. As a verb, its definitions include: ‘"expect with confidence’" and '"to cherish a desire with anticipation .’”

Firstly, hope is something we all need. Whether or not it is present in our lives can make the biggest difference. There are many families out in the world today who don’t know when they will get their next meal. As well as, many individuals. People should be able to always have hope for a better future for themselves, but
She struggles with being treated differently due to ageism and racism. When the hunter says “ I know you old colored people! Wouldn't miss going to town to see santa claus!”(97). The hunter is calling Phoenix’s whole race childish and referring to elderly people as foolish. Phoenix refuses to allow it to disturbed. her and accepts the hunters comment. When she gets to town the attendant in calls Phoenix a “charity case” (98) due to her age. The nurses also speak loudly to her and asked her questions such as “ Are you deaf?”(99). The nurses treat Phoenix like she is a child or senseless due to her old
In 1941 which was the publishing date for the story, we can relate to the narrator was trying to show how black people used to suffer before from slavery, even after slavery ended, they suffered from racial and gender discrimination and, but for Phoenix it was only a lesson for her and she gained strength from it. A Worn Path time period was tough on any black and women, Phoenix was strong and didn't allow such a thing to restrain her will to get the medicine, in the situation where the White man pointed the gun at Phoenix, she responded “ “No, sir, I seen plenty go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done”() she held still, not moving for a second, which relates to what she have learned back in her days, where she lived to
Unlike many people who would feel weak and helpless if someone pointed a gun at them, Phoenix stands with pride and courage. When the hunter points a gun at Phoenix 's face, she remains calm and even controls the confrontation. Her difficult life 's experience as an African-American woman who lived through slavery makes her spirit strong. Eudora Welty shows that strength through Phoenix 's answer "I have seen plenty [guns] go off closer by, in my day, and for less than what I done"(p.366). It was not the first time that she has faced death, and she is not going to be scared of that selfish man who believes that everyone and everything should be afraid of him. However, this old woman, who seems to be the weakest victim ever, and should be scared to death of the hunter, looks straight in his eyes telling him that she has no fear of him. The hunter is impressed by her attitude of being so physically weak and spiritually strong that even he can 't break that strength. She is victorious with her inner power, which consists of her love, experience, dignity and wits.
This is what I believe in even if people may not think the same on it. I believe in hope. The only thing you really need to believe in is hope because when you have hope for something then you can do anything you want. Hope Isn’t something you can pick up and drop. Hope is where you believe in yourself and have the confidence in telling yourself to do the right thing or you have a really good feeling that you can do something big or that you will succeed in life.
Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” takes place in the mind of Maya Angelou. She is talking about someone who is saying bad things about her. Even though they are saying bad things about her she won’t let it bring her down she will rise. She shows her Confidence by saying that she will rise, another way she is showing her Confidence is by being confident in her heritage, and her Confidence is evident through her displays of literary devices.
Rising Up in Still I Rise by Maya Angelou ? Still I Rise? by Maya Angelou is directed towards blacks on how to be proud of their ancestry, themselves, and their overall appearance. The poem is a special and motivating poem that African-Americans (and other races for that matter) should read and take to heart. According to African-Americans, Maya Angelou states that no matter what white Americans (slave owners) say or do to African-Americans (slaves) they can still rise up to make a better life for themselves and their race as a whole.
Being optimistic is the main principle for most people. We may often hear the statement about “be an optimist, not a pessimist!” shouted by people. Sometimes you do it for yourself too. When facing such a failure or problem, this will not only help to relieve your heart. Being optimistic will help someone to be healthy in physical and mental. An optimist will find the best way in any circumstance and hope for every good thing can come to him/her. You may have gone through thousands of hard times. However, if you are a born optimist then you will not care of anything destructing you.
