Persuading Essay
Keilani Shelton #16
In sixth grade, I have experienced dropping by books and carrying much more supplies that I need at that moment. Therefor, I believe Holy Family Catholic School needs to add lockers for the middle school students. Adding lockers can encourage responsibility for students, it will prevent students from carrying to much supplies, and can help students be creative in an educational way. This action can encourage students to get ready for the next grade in an organized and fun way. To start, students in the middle school grades carry books, notebooks, etc. to a period they won't need at that time. For example, students would have to carry their science books to math because they have science

For example, they will have to memorize their locker combination. This can teach them to be organized and to remember things. This task can prepare students for high school. It can prepare them for high school by teaching the students to be organized, which is a skill you will need for ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade. In addition, having lockers can also teach students to be organized by memorizing where and what locker is theirs. This task can help students and teach them that they will need this task in high school, collage, and even out of school. Lastly, lockers can encourage creativity. Students will be able to decorate their lockers if they so choose. This concept can influence kids to be imaginative and creative with this sort of freedom. For example, a student may like robots, so they can use stick notes to make a pattern of colors to make a robot. The sticky notes can be used educationally as well. If they have homework from a certain period, they can write it down on the way to their next class. This way, when students go to their lockers at the end of the day, they can see what homework that have to do. In conclusion, adding lockers can help students in many ways. Adding lockers can assist students to carry less books, it can help teach them responsibility, and can encourage creativity. So, adding lockers can help the middle school get ready for the next grade in a organized,
Personally I think it is a violation of the law in some cases. Schools do have the permission to search the lockers though because of the fact that it is their property they’ve funded it but there has been some situations with faculty searching your pockets and backpacks or even making you take off your clothing. Now the pocket and backpack check is something that they can do when you enter the building but not at random times. They have to have probable cause which means they need a reason to search you meaning the person who is conducting the search or a witness visibly see you with something you’re not supposed to have, or smell a use of drugs or alcohol.
Improvement in security will also contribute to a safe environment. High schools should implement the use of metal detectors as well as random searches. Although, it may be tedious to remove all metal and coins from your pockets, it will ensure safety. This security measure can be specific to each school. An example being to make the checks random throughout the week or only require it for students to have a late arrival. Random searches can also be specified such as only searching lockers or classrooms. Motion sensored cameras can also be a very effective with safety. In many school’s cameras are only in the hallways and lunchroom, but what happens when violence occurs in a classroom? All evidence will be based off hearsay. This is not an effective way of assessing the incident considering there are 3 sides to every story. Adding motion cameras to classrooms will make evidence accurate. Not only will student-student altercations be recorded, but teacher-student altercations will be recorded. Security guards themselves should also be improved. Security guards should be posted in hallways upon children arrival, during passing periods, and upon school dismissal. Security guards should also be fit enough for the job. “The results indicated that utilization of multiple security measures reduced the likelihood of exposure to property
. In Pros and Cons of School Locker Searches, it states that, " Misplaced Focus: searching lockers can imply to students that they aren't trustworthy. It can ruin the school's attempt to build school community trust and respect." In Article 3 ( Pros and Cons of School Locker Searches- Synonym), it states, " School locker searches also consume valuable time for administrators, security guards, and teacher who conduct them. Student also lose their learning time because of this issue." In addition, Article 3 states, " Because students may keep personal items in their lockers, such as photographs and personal letters, even a search with the best intentions can appear to be a major breach of trust by teachers and administrators, causing a rift between the student body and faculty." Some people may argue that locker searches can keep children safe. It "protects them." But how can locker searches protect the children unless they think something's up. If the children act normal and they have a gun in their backpack, then how does this help keep them safe- if no one's suspicious of
Where as others may believe that this will make the school system more of a bureaucracy. Further more those would also argue that most of the time lockers are hardly involved in the keeping of contrabands. If students have contraband items they are more likely to keep it on them and therefore randomly searching lockers it not as important. The time and energy which would be spent searching lockers could be used in more efficient way.
Safety is, ”the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk, or injury” (“Dictionary”, n.d.). That is what locker searches provide for schools. With the early case of New Jersey v. T.L.O, a teacher caught a 14 year old girl smoking a cigarette in the bathroom. This led the teacher to send the girl to the principal in which the assistant principal decided to check her bag and locker for more cigarettes or other contraband. The assistant principal found marijuana and a list of people that owed the girl money. The teen took the school to court for
benefit to students if the teachers keep track of the students work. Their progress can be well monitored and any problems they come across can be easily identified.
In conclusion, even though there are many different pros and cons about searching school lockers humans today need to search them if need when needed.Although school locker searches can be bad in some legal
It cannot be disputed that schools often have to place the privacy of one student, below the overall need to secure the safety of a student body as a whole. If students know that their belongings can be searched, it will discourage them from committing illegal activities at school.
In conclusion Bull Run middle school has to change a lot of things with the lockers that they have.
Now addressing the complete disrespect and breach of privacy when it comes to school lockers. Lockers aren’t ever really safe, it’s true. If wanted/required a security guard can easily unlock your locker at any point in time during a school day. And you might be thinking: “Okay? So what, they’re just kids” well newsflash, kids have rights too. K-12, the upper echelons of the education system sometimes out right accuse these poor students of harboring drugs and other unlawful paraphernalia within their lockers, and takes upon themselves to undergo what they call “a locker search”, or in other words. “Breach of privacy example number 3”.
Why are so many students against locker searches? Locker checks are not done to invade a student's privacy but they are meant to ensure the safety of students by eliminating weapons entering the school grounds and prevent illegal activity such as the consumption of drugs, and trafficking. Locker checks are essential because malevolent students bring drugs and weapons to school and store them in their locker. When schools have locker checks they are prohibiting the possible, trafficking and drug usage, cheating on tests and quizzes, as well as possible school massacres such as the St Pius shooting in Ottawa on October 27 1975, or the Columbine High School shooting on April 20th 1999. With having school locker/personal searches situations, and illegal activity like this can be prevented making school a harmful place.
I believe that middle school students should have lockers. It could be difficult for them to carry all of their stuff. Their bookbags could be too heavy, which might hurt their backs. Lockers could make keeping up with school work much easier. It makes it easier for students to be organized too. Students would also be prepared for class more.
I have heard that people think that locker searches are violating their right to store their belongings away from prying eyes. Locker searches in schools should be implemented therefore increasing the safety of the staff and students in the school by keeping contraband off the school campus. Other measures should also be put in place, as one method cannot prevent everything, but it can help make the school a safer place. These are our future generation that we are putting in danger by not keeping them safe and exposing them to weapons and drugs. Locker searches would reduce the use of drugs in schools, protecting the future of many students that would otherwise be destroyed by drugs.
Some claim that they are the school property and if something is going on then they should be able to conduct a search, but the schools did give the students the lockers to keep there stuff safe, on the impretion that the schools can’t shereach them.So schools shouldn’t be allowed to conduct random searches of students privat items.
In a recent poll a whopping 36 percent of students felt that safe spaces were necessary on college campuses according to LendEDU, a student loan organization. Safes spaces provide an outlet for many who may take offense to material that negatively impacts a student’s emotions. Some students who have had traumas in their life take security in safe spaces due to the guarantee of not being in harm’s way of the lessons they may find offensive. In a world that is not censored from sensitive material in every location it is apprehensive to put trust into a specific location for security. Although many would agree safe spaces provide an outlet of security for those who have experienced traumas in their life, an alternative compromise should be in place to allow students to explore the world from different perspectives, learn to handle the tribulation of opposition, and to prepare students to overcome adversity outside of the classroom. Safe spaces on college campuses are defined as a place or environment in which a person or category of people can feel confident that they will not be exposed to discrimination, criticism, harassment, or any other emotional or physical harm therefor, it is wise to find comfort in the ideological sense of security a student would likely find in a safe space.
