The topic on debating about abortion has been one of the biggest controversies there has been in human history. There are many people in this planet that believe that it is very immoral and even consider it to be murder. The definition of abortion is, “When a pregnancy ends abruptly, either voluntarily or involuntarily, and the fetus is expelled from the womb before it can live on its own. There are many ways you can see things in life, every human being has a different type of perspective. The way we see things in life and how we feel about them are completely different for all of us. Now in the case of pro-life believers, they do not support the idea of having an induced abortion and truly believe it should be illegal. There are many supporters that do not know that if abortion were to be illegal they would still be performed, sadly by uneducated staffs. There are over 80 thousand maternal deaths that occur almost every year because of unsafe abortions. The idea of women having the choice to do what she pleases with her own body and support the right to privacy is a pro-choice belief. A great example could be, when a woman is raped by a man and becomes pregnant with his child, she then decides she does not want to keep the baby, she now has an abortion because the idea of raising a child from a man that raped her is a very painful thing to cope with all her life. Many pro-choice defenders take sympathies to this woman while in the other hand she then gets called a
There is pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-life considers abortion unethical while pro-choice considers it to be ethical. Some reasons why it would be labeled unethical is because one may tie their religion to their ethical standpoint and examine the potential life that a woman is carrying to be pure and destined for greatness. They may argue that by having an abortion, one is taking away from the world a potential Ghandi or scientist that may be able to someday create the cure for cancer. They may reason that by having sex, a woman is already obliged to have a child if she becomes pregnant and having an abortion is considered to be running away from responsibility. They may also believe that by having an abortion, one is committing murder. On the other hand, there are people who consider abortion to be ethical because they reason that regardless of the potential life, it is a woman’s body, future, and ultimately, her choice. They may also reason that a woman should not have the weight of feeling the obligation to have a child because it is her decision to mold out her own future and not have roles imposed on her by society. They may also argue that a fetus is not in fact a full human yet; therefore, does not have a conscious and is analogous to a
If women do not have the right to chose if they want to be a mother or not, they are not being treated equally and getting the rights they deserve. “It should be her right to life that is predominant in pregnancy” is what Katha Pollitt states in “Abortion: No More Apologies” (Pollitt 13). If women do not feel comfortable or safe enough to get an abortion if they need one, they will postpone it and wait longer. The longer a woman waits to have an abortion, the higher the risk (haney 49). Pro choicers think that women are taught to feel safe and secure in this world, and if they do not have the right to their own bodies, how can they feel secure. If women do not feel comfortable or safe enough to get an abortion if they need one, they will postpone it and wait longer. The longer a woman waits to have an abortion, the higher the risk (haney 49). Pollitt says that “legalization changed how women saw themselves: as mothers by choice, not by fate”(Pollitt 13). By this statement, she is saying that women feel good knowing they are not being forced into being a mother, but have the opportunity to if they would like.
To be "pro-choice" is to believe that individuals have unlimited autonomy with respect to their own reproductive systems as long as they do not breach the autonomy of others (Head, 2015). According to Lydia Saad of Gallup.com, half of Americans consider themselves "pro-choice" on abortion, surpassing the 44% who identify as "pro-life." Over the decades people have come around to the idea that for the right circumstances abortion may not be such a problem subject like it used to be. This is the first time since 2008 that the pro-choice position has had a statistically significant lead in Americans' abortion views (Saad,
Abortion has been a controversial topic since being declared a “fundamental right” following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Roe v. Wade in 1973. There are two different areas of advocacy: those who identify themselves as pro-life, and those who identify by pro-choice. Pro-life activists view abortion as an immoral killing of a human being, and do not condone it under any circumstance. Pro-choice activists believe abortion is a civil right, and women should be in control of any decision regarding their bodies.
Whereas, those who believe that abortion should be legal are pro-choice. They may say that abortion should be legal in the United States because women should be able to decide what happens with their body, the mother doesn’t want the baby, and they’re too young to take care of a baby. In most cases those who are pro-choice believe that the mother should have the choice of what happens to their body, hence the name pro-choice. However, the right for someone to live overrides the right for someone to choose. The right for the mother to choose is way more than just what happens with their body, it is the choice of whether there baby lives or not. Another commonly used reason why abortion should be legal is that the mother doesn’t want the baby. This is an example of irresponsibility on the women’s part. If they didn’t want the baby in the first place they should have taken precautions. Sex is meant for reproduction and the mother should have realized that and been more responsible, by using protection. They had a choice not to use protection, thus resulting in a baby. Lastly, one reason why people believe that abortion should be legal is that the mother is too young to take care of a baby. However, in most cases the mother is not too young. For example, “In Missouri in 2012 the number of abortions by those 19 years old and younger was 13.9% of the total number of abortions.” (Pazol 69) In many
“In her own case, Ms. Brenneman said she was a 21-year-old junior at Harvard when her birth control failed and she had an abortion. ‘It allowed me to choose when to become a mother,’ she said. ‘As a mother now, I know I was correct at 21… I didn’t have a college degree… I didn’t have an income. I didn’t have a marriage. I didn’t have anything a child needs. And I didn’t want it” (Liptak, 2016). Brenneman, among the 24% of women who will undergo an abortion during their lifetime by the age of 45, chose the best decision for herself at that specific instance in her life, described in the personal testimony above (Jones, 2014, p. e1). The recent attacks on women’s reproductive rights by the Republican Party, although grounded in “protecting
Premature births are one of the numerous things that everybody has a feeling on. As characterized by the 2012 Merriam-Webster word reference,
People who support banishing legal abortions are usually referred to as “pro-lifers.” They usually believe in standing up for the unspoken rights of the fetus and believe that the practice of abortion is morally wrong. Expanding upon the theory of predestination, it is believed that the fetus itself has its own freedom, and it is their job to represent and protect those God-given rights.
There is a threat going on right now against women’s rights that many people might not know about. Women need to take charge and not let another day of a pregnancy go by where there is not a choice available to end things that might have happened accidentally, so the life of the woman can stay happy, healthy, and moving towards a life that the woman desires. The threat that clearly needs brought to attention is one involving abortions. The government, and to clarify more specifically the House of Representatives, has begun to pass a bill that will limit the time frame that women can receive a safe abortion. This bill passed through the House already and is more correctly called the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (Unites States).
Should women have the right to choose abortion as a means of terminating a pregnancy, instead of carrying a fetus to full term? Since the US Supreme Court granted women the right to abortion in 1973, the general population has been divided among those that support (pro-choice) and those oppose (pro-life) the ruling. In 2013, 664,435 legal induced abortions were reported to the Centers for Disease Control.(Jatlaoui) By definition, abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Just as terminating the life of another human being is wrong and punishable by law, terminating the life of a fetus is likewise wrong, and should no longer be upheld as a legal method for ending the life of a human being.
Poor, illegal, and having just become a teenage parent four years prior, my mother faced a difficult decision to make. Should she continue struggling through life as a single parent of two children or walk down to the local abortion clinic and make life a little easier for herself? Having had the fear of the Almighty One instilled in her from a very young age and taught the importance of every life, my mother made a choice that lead to my birth. Just like my mother, many women--both young and old--face very difficult decisions to make when a pregnancy occurs. “Will I have enough money to support a child?” “What if the baby has developmental issues?” “How can I have a baby that came from being raped?” These are all questions and circumstances that trouble many women in the U.S. and has lead to the controversial topic of the legality of abortion in our country. Based on my own personal beliefs and values, I believe that abortions should not be legal but, at the same time, no one should govern what a person decides to do with their body.
Abortion is one of the many topics that everyone has an opinion on. An abortion is “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus” (Merriam-webster). Abortion has always been and most likely always be a controversial topic that not everyone will agree on. Throughout the argument, two groups have emerged; pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice supporters believe that women should be able to do what they want with their body no matter the circumstance. While pro-life supporters claim that life begins at conception, so an abortion at any stage of the pregnancy is considered murder. There are two types of abortions, in-clinic abortions and the abortion pill. There are a few types of in-clinic abortions such as; vacuum aspiration which happens during your first trimester, dilation and evacuation (D&E) which is during your second trimester, and dilation and extraction (D&X) if you are further along than that. However, dilation and extraction is now illegal in the United States as by the third trimester, the fetus is nearly fully developed, including its sense of pain, so this procedure is considered cruel and unusual. Abortions have been around for thousands of years, however in the 1800s abortions were illegal in the US due to the dangerous procedures and surgeries. It wasn’t until 1973 that the Supreme court granted women the right to an abortion, and abortions became legal in the United States. Ever since abortion got legalized, many people have argued whether it should be legal or not, people are either pro-life or pro-choice. Personally I am pro-choice because I believe that it is the women's right to decide what she wants to do with her body.
Parental consent is currently required for a minor to receive an abortion because parents believe young adults are incapable of making such an important decision because they are not mature enough (Maradiegue 2). However, if a young adult is responsible enough to have safe sex, then they should be able to determine if they want an abortion. Parents do not have absolute veto over the young adults decision, but if the young adult wishes to go against their parent’s decision they must receive approval through a clear and convincing evidence, which allows the daughter to prove she is “mature or that the abortion is in her best interest prior to waiving the state’s parental involvement requirement” (“Parental Involvement”). A teenager should
Men are told to “support the family” but many guys do not have a choice to say, I want to be a father. Many fathers have a lot of regret aborting “I was a participant in two abortions with my ex-wife… It has been six years since the last abortion, nine since the decision for the first one. “Every time I see children of the approximate age of the two lost ones, I cry, no matter where… church, the mall, the park, the library. I want to call their names, Michelle, Danielle, Stephen, William. Their legacy is gone. Their beauty unfinished, nullified by a decision to which I agreed… I have gone from pro-choice to pro-child”. From a father who emailed Human Life Alliance. Thirty percent of women have abortions before forty-five according to a leading sexual and reproduction organization Guttmacher Policy Organization. In many countries you may not be able too as a guy have a say in their unborn child decision to keep the baby or to have an abortion.
The second a baby is conceived, it can be considered a life form of a person. It marks the beginning of every individual that has ever lived. So why is it acceptable to open a time of everyone's life where being killed is acceptable. I will be arguing that abortion is not acceptable and that we need to take responsibility for our actions. However there is a justifiable reason to receive an abortion under certain circumstances.
