In todayś society we face many objections, as to how things are and how it will effect others. Essentially, we can see censorship and other objections occuring more often throughtout our history. Movies, books, Plays, etc. are currently and continuously being revised and looked over for the reason of censorships that happen throughout the school in thus nation. This comenly is occuring more throughtout schools. As parents, and teachers don´t want to obeject there kids or students to things that ¨need¨ or should be censored; such as bad language, vulgur meanings/saying and more often sex and drugs. Which under many advisments could be a nessesarry thing. Overall I do not agree to the censorship in school to an extent. Essentially, Schools should not conduct censorship unless it is a school that holds younger students. Heres the reasoning behind that; most students will be subjected to all of those properties that are being censored in one way or another and even at some point in there life. It is not our duty to hide away the real world. It is the saying ¨the more you know the more you grow¨ that is when pretaining to knowledge. If we were to censor everything bad thing, we would be putting off, and procrastinating the fact that they will learn and see these things anyway. Isn´t important to fill children and students up with as much knowledge as possible? Yes because the more they know the smarter they are, as well as being more equiped when facing life towards there future. Some may say, well students don´t need to be hearing or even reading vuglar language? But have we stopped to ask ourselves; is it perhaps that our children, students, children are already being subjected to these kids of things? At school there is a plentiful amount of students that already know and show the things that society is trying to mask. Therefore showing that not matter how much you censor something it will always still be there and seen in one way or another.

Most who argue against censorship believe that it goes against a person’s right to freedom of speech. Within this argument, most people wonder “just when, and on what grounds, the state is justified in using its coercive powers to limit the freedom of individuals” (West). When thinking in this mindset, individuals tend to antagonize the government, because they come to believe that it suppresses their individuality and fail to consider the fact that it unites people who share its similar beliefs. As a result of the recent spike in technology and use of the Internet, the public must continually alter its definition of freedom of speech and expression. As the media offers more and more methods of communication, many of which are relatively self-regulated by users, more methods of expression develop, which may render other forms of expression obsolete, or even socially unacceptable (Qazi). Without understanding how much freedom of speech one is entitled to, one may never hope to defend that freedom if it ever comes under attack. Because technology develops so quickly that one definition will hardly suffice for a short period of time, people will find it increasingly difficult to understand how much right to expression they are allowed and will therefore fight for any and all that they may attain, never considering the benefits of censorship in the slightest. It is better to look confident than to ask questions in this modern society. However, it is fear and uncertainty that lead mankind down dark paths. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis said in Whitney v. California “…Men feared witches and burnt women. It is the function of speech to free men from the bondage of irrational fears” (Cornell Law School). The content of the books in Pico was morally unacceptable to a group of concerned parents, as they were afraid of the writers’ influence on their children. The question of morality policing by schools is seen in other banned book instances, as well. In fact, take Dr. Seuss’ classic The Lorax, a children’s book about conservation, or the 1987 American Heritage dictionary, which was banned for its addition of slang words (The Week). The question is where the line is drawn between what is acceptable and what is not, and who is granted the authority to decide? Are different cultural liaisons consulted? Are the religious and atheist asked their opinions or is it up to the agnostic to decide? Not only this but are educators made to be the primary compass in the moral lives of their students? Can they actually force their views and opinions on their pupils? What would be the result when the inevitable happens and a child’s family has a different view on what is acceptable than that of the superintendent of the school district? Beyond this, how can adults answer questions children might have in relation to things about which they know nothing? The parents of our communities tend to fall on either side of the issue, divided into pro and anti-censorship groups. The big question that everyone is asking is if a student were to open a book and read about drugs, sex, or violence will this make a child more susceptible to this kind of behavior? Our United States board of education believes so, and has installed censorship safety precautions in the literature that is available in public schools and libraries. According to the American Library Association between 1990 and 2000 6,364 challenges against books were brought to Office of Intellectual Freedom by parents, teachers, and different pro-censorship organizations. The grounds for these challenges were that the books contained sexually explicit material, offensive language, satanic references, violence, homosexuality, or promotion of a religious belief. Some books that were on this list include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (for incessant use of the n word), The Catcher and the Rye (Depicts teenage depression, prostitution and use of the f word) and Go Ask Alice (Instances of Drug Use, sex, and suicide. Censoring and banning books is a very bad idea for many reasons, but one being that it creates ignorance and belittles people. Censoring makes young people very sensitive to things that other people say and do in their everyday life. This is not good because these sensitive mindsets can hurt not only themselves but others because of the judgment. Everyone should be able to understand other people's lives. In fact, many books get banned for talking about cultures and sexuality. This is horrible because when a young adult has no idea about their fellow classmates or other people’s cultures, they might stare and act very rude about their beliefs. Not only this, but everyone should be capable of understanding other people’s sexuality. We should all come together and push for peace and understanding of one another, we shouldn’t push for judgment!
Some would argue that if you censor books, it prevents youth from gaining access to books that are not age appropriate. Age appropriate is different for each age and person so you can't always tell what is and isn't age appropriate. It is impossible to know whether or not a book is appropriate for someone. There are various reasons as to why censorship is used. They include: security purposes, prevent hate speech, to protect vulnerable communities and also to counter unethical religious and political views. Censorship is currently being used for both political and social purposes. Most of these reasons for censorship are not absolute because they hinder people’s freedom of expression and speech. This confirms my argument that censorship is bad in the modern world. Some people are all for censoring what children can read so that they are not corrupted. Other people believe that individuals should have the choice in what they want their children exposed to, and school libraries face this problem frequently. A majority of parents do not want their kids exposed to certain types of books and movies, that most libraries frequently would offer. This is hard for the school, because they have to pick and choose, and virtually censor what they offer to the students to read. People should have the freedom to expose themselves to what they want.
Many students, parents and teachers may think this is a bad thing but they don’t understand that censoring some things may have some benefits rather than being all bad.
