''Banning books gives us silence when we need speech. It closes our ears when we need to listen. It makes us blind when we need sight.''
Censorship is altering or blocking certain materials from media, internet, and books.
School shouldn't censor certain materials such a book, music movies, magazines.
I'm a student who loves searching, learning about new things
I will be informing you about how censorship makes students ignorant, violates the first amendment, and limits teachers from teaching.
First, censoring certain topic and materials make student ignorant about the real world. This cause student to not be educated about sex, discrimination, and violence. They will be less prepared for the real world if they are not informed about
Censorship has happened everywhere and happens everyday especially inside schools. In city schools there have been conflicts over what students should or should not learn. Censors decide that they should protect students from materials and activities that are upsetting and issue the wrong ideas. These ideas are said to "weaken parental authority, challenge students political moral, or religious views, or brainwash them into other ways of thinking (Sherrow10)." By protecting them they mean targeting academics. Courses that deal with drug prevention, sex education, development of character, or clarification of

Pete Hautman once said, “Yes, books are dangerous. They should be dangerous - they contain ideas”. In today’s society there is a burning issue on whether or not books shall be banned from schools and other public places. Throughout history there have been many examples of censorship. For example, in 1950 when Joseph McCarthy burned and tried to remove any books with foreign and Communist ideas. People think that due to inappropriate information, or what they think is inappropriate, books have been removed. Books should not be banned, since it can make people become ignorant, discourteous, and naive, as well as being in our constitution.
One counterpoint of the argument of the topic is that banning books hinders students from discovering new things and obtaining knowledge. According to the article, “Banning Books: An Overview”, Michael Aliprandini and Carolyn Sprague state, “The core arguments against the banning of books have been based on protecting the rights of individuals to free speech as well as to promote intellectual freedom – the rights protected by the First Amendment.” They are basically explaining how arguments of book banning connect to the idea of intellectual freedom and protecting individual rights, which are implied in the First Amendment. Censorship of books can be expressed as violating the rights and freedom of the individuals. Boyd and Bailey support this idea of intellectual freedom by presenting how banning books in schools with the quote from their journal, “Censors evoke barriers to free thought and speech when they block knowledge acquisition, intellectual development, as well as creative and critical thinking…” (Boyd and Bailey, 655). In other words, students will not be able to develop the academic skills they need in order to succeed in school if books are banned for them. Previously, there have been books banned from the school curriculum because of the
Censorship has been around for millions of years. Although censorship is still practised in some countries today, almost anyone would agree that censorship is never the right answer; as we have seen in the past, it has seldomly ever works out. Which is why it is so concerning that schools are starting to allow censorship in classrooms. As a result of this, the world is seeing an alarming amount of young millennials who are fresh into the workforce, expecting to always be catered to. More and more millennials are not being properly prepared for the real world due to censorship in schools; schools have been giving in and catering to students by allowing the censoring of books and microaggressions in the classroom, as a result the students are being taught that the world will cater to everyone, which is very inaccurate.
Censorship is a widely debated topic, because it has the power to dictate the types of diverse and contrasting ideas exposed to students. There are many different opinions on this subject with very valid reasons behind those opinions. For example, those opposed to censorship say that censorship violates the people’s inalienable
School districts across the nation are banning books in school libraries. Some books contain inappropriate language that parents don't want their children to read. However, school boards should not be able to ban books from school libraries. I believe my position is correct because we live in a free country where book banning shouldn't be allowed.
There could be multiple reasons why certain books are banned. Some of the reasons may include profanity, racism, sexual content, etc. It is obvious that a book like Fifty Shades of Grey is not allowed in school, but there are parents out there who will ban books such as The Great Gatsby, Bridge to Terabithia. These kinds of books could lead the children to do horrific acts based on learning from these books. However, it could be good to have these horrific content to educate children about the various negative things that occur in this world. These banned books are meant to educate students, although the books can’t educate when there are parents are preventing them. The parents do have the right to stop their child from reading the inappropriate books, but it’s just unnecessary since the schools allow these books to be taught to the students.
As one can see, banning books, while possibly saving the innocence of a few children, is causing much turmoil due to the bowdlerization, the valuable lessons that are lost, and it’s ineffectiveness. Public libraries and in time, some schools, may begin or continue to banning books that could
It is often argued that schools should be able to ban books Nevertheless, it is absolutely imperative that schools not be allowed to ban books because books help people understand other ways of life, books help people gain empathy, and books help
The students of this country are expected to follow the rules and regulations that their schools impose, and whether or not they are fair is constantly challenged. In a perfect world, everyone would be content under the same guidelines, regardless of how restrictive they may be. However, this is not a perfect world and finding a universal agreement among everyone is virtually impossible. Throughout history, those who have disagreed with actions made by authoritative figures have found a way to protest said actions. From the Cambodian protests in Kent State to the Tiananmen Square protests, students have been very vocal about what they are against and refuse to be censored by their schools or their government. Attempting to do so, however, could lead to retribution from authorities. Censoring students and their voices affects the students by almost trying to instill fear and demoting contest from them can result in various scenarios, both good and bad.
Censoring is not only in college classrooms, but in high school classrooms as well. It impedes on a student’s ability to develop and learn, hinders their ability to prepare for the modern-day world. Although cliché, and very sadly so, it is very apparent that today there is almost nothing that can be said that offends nobody. Thick skins have been replaced with fragile minds, and college students do not even know the extent of the first amendment. However, these same students believe they have the right to interpret the amendment their own way, and some believe they have the right to become the judiciary system if the speech doesn’t appeal to them.
Book banning has been used throughout history as a way to control the ideas of a society. It is “a form of censorship that attempts to control the dissemination of thoughts and ideas that some groups in society believe to be harmful”(“Book Banning”). Governments and religious bodies have tried to ban books with differing or revolutionary views. Today, the top reasons books are banned are because of sexual content, objectionable language, violence, homosexual themes, racism, and religion (Whelan). The argument of book banning is seen in communities, school boards, public libraries, and state legislature, and can involve governments, corporations, book publishers, and private citizens (“Introduction To Book Banning: At Issue”). Book banning
Another very good example of a good use of censorship is a parent raising his/her children. Children who are raised with parents who only speak of abhorrence and hate, will eventually become young people who only tolerate abhorrence and hate. The guardians of children need pay attention to the world around their children thus committing the act of censorship.
Some people do not realize that they affect the education of their children by banning certain books. The banning of books is banning the author's right to free speech which can hinder the education of Americans. In schools teachers have to worry about what readings they present to their students because they could have any parent coming after them for exposing their children to “heinous” or “bad” things when all it truly is, is literature used to broaden
