Over the past decade or so, the technology of cloning has taken off in leaps and bounds.
Scientists are now able to clone an entire organism. As with most scientific discoveries, there is great debate concerning the legal and moral implications of such ability. What makes a human, human? What determines a person’s individuality? What are the possible consequences physically and psychologically of the clone? If there are benefits, do they outweigh the possible harms? In general, there are two sides to this debate, those in favor of and those against human cloning. Those who advocate for human cloning take up the cause for research and gene therapy.
They also draw attention to various medical benefits such as the overcoming infertility and treating inherited diseases better. They would say there are no moral issues regarding individuality because identical genes do not equate identical personalities or experiences. In contrast, those who oppose this technology cling to the moral reality of human nature and individuality. According to the Islamic view, such a thing is a threat to human dignity and honor.
Humans become as objects manufactured in a lab. They bring up the possible psychological harm that the expectations of the parents could cause. At the end of the day, the situation is rather convoluted and involves purposeful thought and cautious steps moving forward.
