After being cyberbullied, 20% of victims have suicide in mind, while 1 in 10 victims actually go through with it. Suicide has grown to be the third leading cause in the death of teens. “4500 kids commit suicide each year” (Laird). Cyber bullying is a growing issue that needs to be resolved. However, can a solution actually exist after so many years of tyranny? Government officials, parents and even students have tried and tried again to raise awareness and thus enact a movement against this life-threatening illness that has infected social media. School officials don’t do anything to prevent these actions mainly because they are unaware that it starts in the classroom, in the hallway, or on school campus before it ever becomes a problem on …show more content…
It always was and, despite what school administrators tell the public, it is rampant today. The recent suicide of a 12-year-old girl who was viciously bullied online and in school attests to this” (Houghton). Cyberbullying is something that has been happening for decades and will always happen. The education administrators seem to see bullying as an epidemic that has just recently started because of the downfall of society. “They make it sound as if bullying is some new byproduct of the 21st century. It isn't. Bullying has been around as long as the human race” (Houghton). As long as the human race is around bullying will be there right along with it, hand in hand. In schools bullying can’t be dealt with because the administrators will do nothing about the issue. They feel as if it is not their responsibility to step in and see it as part of growing up in our society. The school system now holds school assemblies to try and teach students different ways of diffusing an issue by role playing situations with bullies and how to resolve and cope with the stress. Schools think these assemblies work but in reality they don't work at …show more content…
Looking at how long the fight has been going on is proof enough that it is a meaningless fight. Cyberbullying on social media will not be eradicated due to a number of factors. This cause doesn't have enough supporters to back it. Parents are unaware of the dangers their children are in on social media sites. Another thing is that parents are misguided and have no idea how to act in order to stop this growing epidemic. It's one thing to know about the issue of cyberbullying and something different to know what to do about it. Social media isn't going anywhere and therefore will always be the gathering place for bullies to harm others. Cyberbullying is an issue that grew up with our grandparents and will grow up with our children and there isn't anything we can do to get rid of this problem for
Not to mention with everyone being connected throughout social media makes it easier for the word to get around faster and make it worse for that person. Cyberbullying might not involve physical abuse and the words said will not make it hurt any less, but the posts someone puts up will be there for anybody to see and might not ever go away. Cyberbullying is no better than bullying because it can still lead to psychological or emotional problems many kids have to face. In some serious cases it can lead to depression or even worse suicide. It can be prevented by social media websites censoring any harsh or mean comments before the posts are even posted. Although it is not their fault, that is how the problem starts and continues.
Bullies start at a young age and carry on, this helps them feel good about what they are doing and who they are as a person. The only way to make a difference and try to stop bullying and cyberbullying is if the parents are there to help. “Parents of bullies are advised to take the problem seriously, looking for the causes of anger or frustration, letting them know that hurtful behavior will not be tolerated, supervising their behavior more closely, “punishing”bullying with positive acts toward others and teaching nonviolent ways of solving problems.” (PERSONAL HEALTH pg. 3) This illustrates that not only the school and parents but the community to must collaborate to control bullying. Parents need to supervise their children on social media and all places in their life, until the children can understand that this is not okay and that we can stand up to bullying. Bullying and cyberbullying can lead to serious causes to the victims and everyone around them. “It is found that children who bully are at risk for engaging in more serious violent acts, like fighting frequently and carrying weapons.” (PERSONAL HEALTH pg.) This proves that the actions of the bullies are long term effects. If someone is to hurt themselves or one another because of how someone made them feel not only will those certain people be hurting inside but the other family and friends in their lives. All of this combined shows that people do bully and
This type of bullying can take place 24 hours a day and is brought into the student’s home where it was once considered safe. Cyber-bullying has changed the world's view on this age-old subject, meanwhile the media suggests that bullying is an epidemic by reporting on tragedies that happen among our youth shedding light on the problem. One thing everyone can agree on is that the internet has provided a non-stop opportunity to bully. Nicole Edgington was celebrating her 17th birthday at a concert when it would be turned upside down by cyber-bullying. A senior in California was wrongly accused of turning some students in for coming to school intoxicated. Because the students assumed she had turned them in, they began a barrage of social media attacks along with text message threats. Nicole wrote an article, the girl who got even: A true cyber bullying story, explaining how she rose above the threats and daily negative texts. It takes courage to stand up and face your fears especially when you feel isolated. Nicole’s mom started to speak out on cyberbullying and found that teens wanted to hear other teens. Nicole would face her bully’s by speaking out about the behavior. The media has suggested that bullying is an epidemic, reporting on tragedies that happen among our youth shedding light on an age-old problem. When bullying moves to the internet it becomes more
Cyberbullying is getting so serious to the point where it is causing teenage deaths. Teens are becoming suicidal and killing themselves due to things being said/posted on the internet. Suicides due to cyberbullying are growing in numbers. On the site http://www.bullyingstatistics.org (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. it states, "Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC." This is alarming because even though there are lots of deaths there and many more suicide attempts caused by cyberbullying. The site also states, "For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of
Also administrators can stop it before it gets too bad. Administrators can also warn parents about all the social media problems today. They can also make good friends with the local police department so that the police can also help take care of the bullies. The police can also talk to the parents and to the students about all of the ways of bullying and ways to prevent it. The schools need to make sure if there is cyber bullying going on within their district it needs to stop. It’s not healthy for the victim because it stresses out him or her way too much to be able to be happy. Also today, there is so many ways to access the internet for people to bully. In the old days, there was no technology and no such thing as cyber bullying. I wish we could go back where there was no technology. Even the parents can have a talk with their kid or kids about good ways and bad ways to use the internet. The child needs to learn how to do behave when online when they are young so they don't get into bad
Cyber bullying has increased since social media usage has gone up. Cyber bullying has no way of coming to an end. Kids do not have a place to go when they are being cyber bullied because social media is always around and some think that the only way to stop the bullying is suicid. “boys who were both bullies and victims of bullying had a higher likelihood of suicidal behavior as compared with those who did not exhibit bullying behaviors or who were only victims. For the girls, there was a different effect of bullying; girls who were victims of bullying were more likely to exhibit suicidal behaviors as compared to those who were neither bullies nor victims” (Campbell, Marilyn A). Cyber bullying is relentless and there is only so much some can take. They make movies about cyber bullying, the movie on Netflix called cyber bullying it highlighted what it was like to go weeks on end being bullied on social media was like and how the lead character had no way of stopping what was happening. Society has let this happen and has a front row seat to what is happening. During an interview a girl talked about how she had a friend that was cyber bullied during high school and that she went through a lot throughout the time it happened. She had to go to therapy overcome what had happened to her. These are the outcomes of cyber
Cyberbullies have been a big problem since 2003. It’s 2016 and it is still a big problem and it’s getting bigger. Bullies will not stop at anything to put someone down even if it's crossing the line at ruining someone's career. Before Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter bullies, most bullying would take place in the classroom. Home is the one place you thought you were safe from the outside world but now your safe haven has been invaded by cyberbullies. Lawmakers are now deciding whether to leave it alone or prosecute.
In most cases, schools intervene too late and the students are too far gone to help. Cyber bullying victim’s have a greater chance of having low self esteem and consider suicide. Does it matter what happens to the nation's students? We hope so right, but even though cyber bullying is a new epidemic in schools, programs to help prevent and protect against it are non existent. Only some schools have been able to create, what they think are appropriate policies. Most schools only develop these programs or policies after an incident of cyber bullying has occurred. It is ashame because the most horrific cases could have been prevented. When I say horrific I talk about the hundreds of teenagers who have decided to take their lives because of bullying.
“The real solution is not criminal prosecution, but it should be education and selective participation.” 60% of young people who have been cyberbullied say that it has affected them in their personal life. However, if a child can’t handle the bullying, they should not use the Internet. Cyberbullying is bullying another person on the Internet. Individuals should not be prosecuted for statements on social media.
Bullying is a common thing in school millions of kids are bullied everyday at school and no one really knows. And bullying can hurt someone really bad by physically, verbally, emotionally,or sexually and more. When a bully is bullying somebody they call them names or try to fight them and make them feel hurt and bad but if you're being bullied just ignore the bully and act brave and that your not scared and that you don't care about them and act like they are not there. And always try to stay with a friend or a little group so that your friends can help you and make sure the bully doesn't try to do anything or just tell an adult and they can help you with the bully.Bullying can make you suffer from physical ailments like stomach aches and more.Technology can make bullying worse because when you post something bad about someone everyone can see it because it's online and if that happens to you just save the things the bully post about you because you can use it as evidence and get the bully back, but most times when a bully is bullying someone is because that bully wants to feel empowered and manipulate people or that bully might have been bullied before so they bully other people.
Over the years, people have been recording the amount of cyber bullying that has been happening to individuals. They have recorded that just in one year, about forty-two percent of people with social media accounts are cyber bullied. Adults are starting to realize that teenagers are not able to handle the emotional and the social aspect that comes with social media (Impact of Social Media). Over time, our society has forgotten about bullying by trying to change the status and by asking students to easily forget about it. This outlook needs to change. Every day, students are being bullied into silence and are afraid to speak up when something is bothering them or when they are hurting. Let us break this silence and end bullying in schools and over the internet (Jery,Simon).
First, I will explain how a student got cyberbullied and never reported it, Then I will explain how this girl was trying to commit suicide and tried, but it didn’t work (which is a good thing) Finally, I will describe how she got better and how she tried to stop it specifically how she did stop it.
Many children in school bully others for various reasons. Bullying is when you are intimidated or victimized repeatedly over time with negative actions from a more powerful peer. It can lead victims to go through serious problems in early childhood and adulthood. In many cases, aggressors do not receive the punishment I believe they should. I believe if they passed stricter bullying laws, it will reduce bullying in many places.
Rebecca Ann Sedwick was a victim of cyberbullying. At the age of twelve, she committed suicide after being bullied online. Months prior to her suicide, her former friends left hateful comments on her social media, with scathing messages that asked “Why are you still alive?” to extreme ones that said “Go kill yourself.” These messages took a great toll on her mental health, and after months of dealing with relentless bullying, Rebecca Ann Sedwick took her own life. On Tuesday, September 10th, 2013, authorities discovered her body at an abandoned cement plant.
