Fire has always been considered a dangerous element; quickly started, but once unleashed, the fire has a mind of its own. Change can either be right or wrong, which is subjective; depending entirely upon one’s views. Heraclitus was very fond of fire, seeing it as the prime example of change. Heraclitus even calls the entire cosmos, “an ever-living fire” which makes sense, for fire can turn into other various elements through what we call a cycle.
The question is, why did Heraclitus put such an emphasis on fire? There are many answers behind Heraclitus’s choice for fire, but most are mere speculation. I feel it is my turn to provide my thoughts on why fire is essential to Heraclitus and the world. The fire best fits into what Heraclitus was stressing, that the universe is forever changing, and what better representation to use than fire? Fire is always evolving itself, it grows from the air and gets smaller from water and the lack of air, those two elements do influence fire, but when it’s all said and done, the fire was able to change what was around it. ‘No man ever comes into contact with the same river twice, for it will not be the same river and he’s not the same man.’ My paraphrase is excellent in representing change; it goes along to say that through experience, one changes and by changing one may believe something that they were once critical of before but now have come to understand it. The river is the same, over time, rivers may get larger or smaller depending on
Explanation: The remaining embers that are keeping the fire alive is being compared to how Athena put Odysseus into deep sleep so he can restore his energy and be ready for the next day.
Fire has turned into a focused, on image for death in this story. When we read about the cottagers bite the dust in the flares after the creature begins the fire, we see that once we encounter fire we see flames filled with death. Fire additionally causes torment for instance when the creature says "In my joy I thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain." The torment that fire has caused not just to the people but also to the creature who has made death occur through flames of this awful mark.
When people received the fire they were amazed by its benefit – it made preparing food faster, brought warmth in a cold area, and illuminated the darkness. The attributes of fire made survival easier for the people until the usage of it became uncontrollable. They found out that fire, when left unkempt, spreads and destroys everything in its path. As time went on people recognized the great power of fire and harassed it to do evil instead of good. People used fire to start wars, demolish forests, and burn others alive. The fact that everyone knew how to start a fire but could not stop it, proves that it should have been left with the immortals. Prometheus’ theft of fire for man irritated Zeus not only because he disliked the people but also because it gave the people the same power and knowledge as the gods. Zeus punished Prometheus for giving fire to the people by tying him to a rock and allowed a vulture to eat out his liver everyday for the rest of his life.
Symbolic Archetype- Fire vs. Ice, in love story of Orpheus and Eurydice there is life between everybody because of Orpheus lyre. Then one day when walking through the forest he came upon a beautiful lady and instantly fell in love with her. He was full of life when he was with her until she died and once she did he went sad. He even went on a journey to get her back from the underworld. He was going to get her back but he was told not to turn around before they got out of the underworld, but he did and lost her and went into eternal sadness and the people who followed him and his music killed him.
Lately, if you turn on the news, the media headlines are covered with the news of protests. These protests include marches, kneeling, and in some cases, even rioting and fighting. However, one from of protesting stands out the most: burning of the United States flag. Recently, protestors have burned the flag to protest the president and the police. Burning the flag is not something new to this country, however. There are many recorded instances of the American flag being burned as a form of speech; especially during the Vietnam War period. I, on the other hand, strongly believe that burning the American flag is wrong. It much more than just a piece of cloth, it is a scared symbol of our country. In order to stop the mutilation of the symbols of our country, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution. The amendment that I am proposing will empower Congress to utilize their powers to implement restrictions on mistreatment of iconic American symbols.
There are situations that impact your everyday life that’s when we call the “Firefighters”. Their lifestyle is risky, they serve the people. Firefighters truly deserve the respect and honor from the community, at the same time, this is a way of showing gratitude for their courage. The firefighter station that I visited was the fire department in San Fernando called “ Station 98”, and their agency is Los Angeles Fire Department, it has been around since 1886.
I don't know how to. Yes, you do. Is the fire real? The fire? Yes it is. Where is it? I don't know where it is. Yes you do. It's inside you. It always was there. I can see it.”(278). This quote is said as the man is dying and these are the last words he tells the boy as he passes. The fire has been referenced several times by the man as he tells the boy they are the good guys, and that it is their mission to carry the fire. The fire in this book symbolizes humanity; as soon as the flame goes out humanity is lost, therefore the fire has to be carried to continuously burn. This is why the man asks the boy to carry the flame. The man is dying and if the flame dies humanity dies with it. The reason it is humanity that dies rather than humans, is that humans in this world still exist. The man and boy have encountered various people throughout their journey, but that is not what the fire represents. Most people we have seen in this wasteland are vicious cannibals who torture others to survive. These people are human and they are surviving but they are not living. Those who carry the flame in this world are doing more than surviving they are living. The flame carriers recognize and have compassion for human suffering; they refuse to shut this part of their mind off in order to survive. This is why it is different from the people just surviving. The spark and flame that humanity once was is carried within them. This is also why the boy asks the stranger when he sees him if he carries the flame. If this stranger carries the flame, the boy knows that he has not lost his humanity, and therefore can be trusted. The reason I think the flame was chosen to symbolize humanity is because fire symbolizes life and knowledge. It has been said that once humans were able to utilize the flame. Humans stood up above animals for fire was the birth of human intelligence. The fire represents this intelligence and human’s ability
While people have the right to protest and say what they want through words or actions, it is wrong to desecrate one’s country by burning the flag because it is disrespectful to the ones who have fought for the country. Many people are against it including the president, but he can not legally stop them from doing it. It is their constitutional right to protest this way because it is a form of speech and the Framers of the Constitution guaranteed freedom of speech and expression to the citizens of the United States with the First Amendment, which reads, in part, "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech." (“Freedom of Speech”). They're getting their message across by using actions rather than words therefore they can not be told to do other wise according to the first amendment in the constitution (Kopan).
Dido, broken by fate can only call for an avenger [to] rise up from my bones, one who will track with fire brand and sword the Dardan settlers, (IV.863). Turnus after the visit by Allecto burns with a continuous rage which compels him unalterably to murderous action. Aeneas does not burn, not so much, but instead is confronted with fire -destructive fire he must run through and away from. Ever endangered by fire it seems to surround him throughout the work. Fire threatens to cut off his escape, as when his ships at the beach in Italy only divinely escape destruction, fire is also evoked to draw him forward. A clear example of this is the arrow that Acestes launches in a futile gesture that bursts into flames and disappears, regarded by all as an unmistakable sign to continue (V.690). Aeneas even has dreams of fire in book IV he rests and sleeps after completing preparations to leave Carthage, but dreams something, resembling
Although, Kleftis refused to return Nero’s element which made the gods even more angry. God of fire, Fotia, and the goddess of air, Aeras, were disappointed due to the decision of Kleftis. Therefore, Fotia created a flaming, burning fire and Aeras made a wind that carried this fire to attack Kleftis. This thief received a wound because of the fire, but he healed himself by using the water element.
What image in the words “burn and rave” suggest? Why should someone “burn and rave at close of day?”
Is coal power the best option for Australia, as current ‘green’ energy options are unable to support our power needs now and into the future.
Fire is not only used to show destruction but to describe human emotions. A fire ignites in Dido’s heart when she falls in love with Aeneas. Similarly, Homer describes Achilles’ anger as a raging flame.
By using sight as a sense, fire has risen in the middle of the story. Specifically, the meaning of fire itself, is something being burned, or is going to be burned. In the same way, fire also spreads drastically everywhere. As it states in the book, “He saw a red light before him, as when the felled trunks and branches of a
“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
