On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people and leaving 17 injured at Virginia Tech. On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza went on a shooting spree in Newtown, Connecticut, killing his mother before shooting 20 1st graders and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary. On June 12, 2016, in Orlando, Omar Mateen killed 49 people and injured 58 others. Most recently on October 1, 2017, 58 people were killed and another 489 injured when Stephen Paddock fired onto the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest music festival. Many more mass shootings have happened where more innocent people have lost their lives. Gun control has been in debate for some period, some people advocate for it while others dissuade it. Now more than ever, changes must be made to better protect people from losing their lives to a shooter. To prevent future tragedies in the United States, there should be stricter gun laws enforcing a more advance psychological test, imposing a federal gun license, and have a 1 month waiting period to receive the gun.
With a more advance psychological test, it could detect any illnesses that a person possesses or that they could potentially acquire in their life as it continues to move forward. The current tests are not thorough enough that they can detect the intent of the purchaser and any possible mental illness that they could contract. Some people even cheat during the current psychological tests so that they pass and purchase a gun. Then, with their actual ill state of mind cause a shooting, killing innocent people. Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech shooter, passed the psychological test and could purchase guns. After the police investigated his personal life, it was found out that he possessed a severe anxiety disorder with selective mutism. Once the shooters personal life is investigated, people realize that they had a psychological disorder or bad mental state. With the more advanced psychological test, cheating just to pass won’t be possible since it would be able to correctly find the persons psychological and mental state. With that, many people who have a bad psychological state will not be able to own a gun, making them less dangerous to the public saving people’s lives from being shot. People who do pass the
With gun related crimes steadily increasing, the spotlight has been on a solution to cease firearm problems. Firearms have been around for hundreds of years, and they are included in self-defense, sport, show, and unfortunately crime. The danger of the situation immediately escalades when there is a firearm involved. A plan to fix these issues has been talked about and looked at throughout the recent years, but there are many different aspects you have to look at when trying to find a solution for this problem. However, not all gun related situations are at fault, for most people follow the law, using and collecting the guns for sporting, collecting, and self-defense purposes. The second amendment in the constitution gives citizens of the United states the right to bear arms. Areas of concern that can be focused on to prevent future danger in firearm situations are gun control laws, process undergone
October 1, 2017 marked the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. With almost 500 injured and 58 killed, not only did Las Vegas feel the tragedy of a personal loss, but the incident had rippling effects that shook all of America (Flaherty). With the fresh wounds of the recent Las Vegas shooting, politician's initial reaction is to implement more strict gun restrictions and "lay down the law" to prevent a similar event from happening again. Due to the drastic laws being carried out, the topic of gun control is a current issue in society. Is the solution to implement more firm restrictions on gun ownership or can the government allow the people to be their own advocates? While the opposing views of pro-gun restrictions argue that is up to the discretion of the government, they are often narrow-minded resolutions with no hope to finding a real solution. This particular shooter obtained his guns legally and passed all background checks, going unnoticed until his plan unfolded. Establishing more strict firearm restrictions would not have stopped the Las Vegas shooting from occurring. The number of gun restrictions can not increase, the government needs to either fix the existing laws or do away with gun restrictions entirely. Gun restrictions are not the solution because guns are not doing the killing--people are, the laws only attack the law-abiding citizens, and the gun restrictions add another infringed upon right that the government controls. While voting against additional gun rules will not completely eliminate the controversy behind this topic, voting against these laws will be a milestone to regaining the rights we have already been promised.
From the Connecticut Sandy Hook School shooting in 2012, to the Recent Parkland School shooting in Florida, hundreds of innocent students and adults have been murdered by guns, and the public is questioning whether or not to have more gun control laws. In order to protect and prevent these traumatic mass shootings we need to pay attention to citizens who have mental issues, have stricter gun purchasing laws, and also stop selling military replicas.
On December 14, 2012, a gunman walked into Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 children and six adults. This tragedy shook the nation and made Americans wonder, how could this have been prevented? Recently published research suggests mass shootings are becoming more common in the United States. Harvard University researchers said in October 2014 that a mass shooting has occurred every 64 days, on average, since 2011, compared with every 200 days from 1982 to 2011 (McLeod). With the recent spike in mass shootings, the United States should regulate gun control by revising the process for gun purchases, ban certain gun accessories, and ban automatic assault rifles.
At 10:08 P.M. on October 1, 2017, the lives of thousands of Americans were suddenly and horrifically altered. Stephen Paddock, armed with rifles altered to achieve fully-automatic fire rates, unleashed an onslaught of lead from his thirty-second-floor balcony. His target was the Los Vegas Strip, where 22,000 people were gathered for the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. For close to ten minutes Paddock turned what was supposed to be a carefree culmination of the three-day festival into a living hell. When the smoke cleared, 580 people lay on the ground bleeding, of which fifty-eight were dead. The next morning, America awoke to the carnage caused by the worst mass shooting in its history, and true to form, immediately started pointing
As many as 30 Americans will be shot dead today. It is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States. According to a recent study, the gun homicide rate in the United States is 25 times higher than in other wealthy countries (guardian.com). Sadly, most Americans are divided on whether the country should enforce stricter gun laws. Many, especially the Liberals, feel as though having firmer gun laws would significantly reduce the number deaths caused by gunshot. In contrast, the Conservatives feel that passing stricter gun laws would do little to change the behavior of criminals who commit violent crimes. The Second Amendment to the Constitution gives all citizens the right to bear arms, yet perhaps the true meaning of
Over the past two decades, gun control has raised controversy upon the American people and changed the way people foresee firearms. Most of these controversies still continue to be brought up today. The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (Brooks np).” In January of 2016, Obama stated his gun control plan that would more strictly enforce existing laws including firearms (Smith np). People deserve the right to have firearms for the ability to protect, defend, and entertain themselves and others. The biggest controversy, including firearms is the way people are introduced and informed about them. People are given the thought that “guns kill people,” when in all reality, “people kill people.” Although there are around 10,000 people killed in the United States each year from firearms, guns are not the main conflict in the killings, the people behind the guns are (Brooks np).
Gun control has become quite the controversial topic over the past few years. With the number of mass shootings rising each year, there’s no doubt about why it is more controversial than ever. But, I don’t believe having complete gun control will end to mass shootings and deaths in America. Gun control is important, but it needs to be thought about in different perspectives. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.
Since the ratification of the Constitution of the United States in 1790, people have debated and argued over the correct interpretation of its contents. This is especially true with the first 10 amendments created shortly after ratification to appease the Anti-Federalists. Perhaps the most contentious of these is the Second Amendment, which protects “the right of the people to keep and bear arms”. In the 21st Century there has been an increasing number of mass shooting by an individual or individuals and this has led to increased debate on the topic of gun control. I believe that gun control is an essential method of curbing gun violence and other gun related incidents. Firearm accessories such as suppressors and silencers as well as bump stocks are unnecessary for civilian use. In addition gun control laws would help to significantly lower the amount of shootings and other gun violence in the United States, as seen through other countries and their programs. Gun control laws are the only way to regulate and control the sheer amount of firearms in the United States, and can help to bring about the end of mass shootings.
For as long as one can remember Americans have been arguing over a very controversial issue, gun control. Many people believe it’s their fundamental right, as Americans, to own guns. As said in the Second Amendment, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. However, due to immense gun violence, many Americans and politicians believe there should be strong gun laws enforced to keep citizens safe. These arguments are not new, even before the second amendment was introduced Americans have had problems with the use and ownership of firearms. I believe we should have strong gun control laws for the safety of American citizens because it will reduce gun violence and gun assisted suicide, as well as keep guns from getting in the hands of criminals.
Over the past decade, gun control raised controversy upon the American people and changed the way people foresee firearms. Most of these controversies still continue to be brought up today. The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights states that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” In January of 2016, Obama stated his gun control plan that would more strictly enforce existing laws including firearms. Should Americans have the right to bear arms? As mass shootings take place in American cities every month, there is always a push by citizens and politicians to enact gun control laws to prevent future horrendous acts of violence. Gun control is a restriction on what types of weapons can be sold, magazine capacity, ammunition type, where these firearms can be stored, to who can possess them and those who can not (Blocher, Joseph and Darrell A. H. Miller). All these restrictions are usually placed upon citizens. Gun control has had a long history of legislations in the United States, but has faced opposition due to the 2nd Amendment. States like California and Arizona handle gun control differently from each other.
The idea of owning a gun can seem immoral and wrong to some people; conversely, owning a gun is a form of protection and security to others. No matter how one views owning a gun, it is a right protected by the Second Amendment. Since the ratification of the Second Amendment, people have debated how the government should regulate the sale and ownership of firearms. The general public has its own opinion on gun control laws, shaped by mass shootings and personal experiences. The Republican and Democratic parties have different ideas on how firearms should be handled, and they agree on very little. Specifically, Georgia’s gun laws are less restrictive than other state governments. With so many people that all have different opinions, the issue is gridlocked, so how should the issue be solved?
Today, all around the world there is an issue with guns. Many genocides are reported on the news channel daily, one important question is it the guns or the owners? The guns used in the killings normally, are automatic weapons they are illegal, but the parts used to make them automatic are not. There has been many debates going around with people wanting to ban the guns, and other people are saying to keep them because it's not the guns fault. President Trump talked about a recent shooting that happened in a Texas church. He said that we could have a gun control law, but for right now it's mental illness that causes these shootings. There are still no differences after any shooting, just death. It won't change because it gets blamed on mental illness. So humans are giving murderers a reason to do what they did. The Second Amendment gives the right to bear arms so guns are allowed in possession whenever. People can go to any gun dealer and buy if you have the money. These shootings and killings with gun’s are putting money into the gun makers pockets. You must be 18 or older to buy a gun though unless you go to a dirty dealer who just wants the money. Guns haven't just killed hundreds of people in mass shootings they also were used in suicide deaths, homicides, and even accidental discharge. Twenty one thousand, one hundred and seventy five suicides that involved guns in the United States. There's been eleven thousand two hundred and eight homicides with guns many people have been murdered by a bullet. There have also been five hundred and five accidental discharges. That's just from 2013 those rates have doubled over the years and turned America into the country with the most death rate by guns. Not every state makes you take a safety course before you can own a gun so many people can buy a gun having no idea how to use it correctly. The United States has the most shootings that occur in the world. This is because throughout the world America has the most mental illnesses and the most gun distributing. America have 270 million through 310 million guns that are made in the United States, that is almost our entire population. There are many shootings that occur in Mississippi it is voted the 7th state with
Imagine sitting in a room with someone who is mentally unstable, is a criminal, and they should not have a gun. They have a gun in their hand and are pointing it at everyone in the room. Mentally unstable people or a criminal can get guns easily and they can harm people. It is not fair for someone to have to worry about getting hurt or killed when they go out. Gun regulation is the attempt to lower crime rate by tightening and creating laws on gun possession. Gun regulation is very important to understand because it is easy to obtain guns. It is easy for anyone to purchase a gun and experience a crime involving guns. Many people become victims of gun violence including children and teenagres who have gotten a hold of an easily obtained gun.
