December 2007, New Life Church in Colorado was attacked by a man named Matthew Murray who was armed with two handguns and an assault rifle. He had shot 2 people dead before being shot and killed himself by Jeanne Assam who was armed and had a concealed carry permit. Jeanne was able to save multiple lives that day because of her ability to exercise her second amendment right, one of the many rights American citizens are given. Rights that the government is now trying to take away, even though they were made to give the government less control over the people. America needs to oppose stricter laws over guns.
During Barack Obama’s presidency, he set out to expand background checks when purchasing a firearm and strengthen the laws on gun control. The current national law for purchasing a gun in the United States is the requirement of a background check when purchasing through a Federal Firearms License (FFL). This law was set in place by The Gun Control Act of 1968. “This act prohibited certain people from buying guns, such as fugitives, people convicted of crimes that were punished by a prison sentence of a year or more, substance abusers, and people convicted of domestic violence crimes” (What You Need 4). The trigger that set off the act was the assassination of former president John F. Kennedy. This act was one of the biggest steps that was taken for gun control and the jumpstart towards taking away american gun rights.
