Gun control One of the biggest controversies that people avoid talking about is gun control. This complex issue seems to have almost equivalent reasons for why we should have gun control or rights. On one hand, obtaining a gun can mean self-defense and protection for yourself or others; but on the other, it can also mean more accidents or mass shootings from inexperienced or depraved individuals. In my academic years since high school, I have avoided talking about this topic as I though the solution was simple: keep gun rights, but with even more strict guidelines. Being the liberal I am, I have always sided with gun rights, but as I’ve done research I now choose to believe that gun control is the best way to go for our society’s safety because by keeping guns accessible for citizens, we will continue to see more accidental or mass shootings. Gun advocates state that it is their constitutional right to carry a weapon. They often say so because if the founding fathers put it in the constitution, then they should be able to act upon it. Lawrence Hunter, Chairman of Revolution PAC, stated, "The Founders understood that the right to own and bear laws is as fundamental and as essential to maintaining liberty as are the rights of free speech, a free press, freedom of religion and the other protections against government encroachments on liberty delineated in the Bill of Rights."
