Persuasive Essay On Gun Control

Decent Essays

Every day, the lives of people in the U.S. are lost due to tragic shootings. Laws on gun control are very controversial, because of the widespread amount of opinions. Some views are extreme, but I believe that gun control needs to meet a middle ground and make compromises to ensure the safety of the citizens. This will help prevent massacres such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, and many more.
The Second Amendment states that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This statement can be interpreted in many different ways. For example, some people believe that this gives the right to average citizens, whereas others think that this doesn’t apply to people not in the military and etcetera. The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 7-4 that "[t]he right of the general public to carry a concealed firearm in public is not, and never has been, protected by the Second Amendment," (Gonzalez, 6/9/16). Personally, I see this statement how it is written, but with the addition of a few details such as strict access to purchasing a gun. Obviously, this wasn’t needed back in the late 17th century, when this document was created, but it is needed now because so many people are getting killed everyday by gun violence. It can closely be compared to the Social Contract Theory created by Thomas Hobbes, which says that the government changes with the people. It shouldn’t be easy to get a gun, because not everyone should be able to own a gun.
