Many animals are sitting in a shelter of some sort this very second and we take our pets for granted ignoring those pets who are less fortunate. Animals should be adopted from shelters to help save their lives and make their lives also better in a number of ways. Many of the animals in shelters get put down or don’t have the funding to care for the animals in the shelters and have to then do anything in their power to get rid of the animal to prevent the idea of killing the animal. Animals don’t get the choice to be in a shelter or not, but I personally see it as in my situation of being in a treatment center for no reason but for a new placement. Animals deserve a second chance to be free again before being killed in a shelter.

Every day in the United States, approximately 10,000 people and 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. There will never be enough homes for all of these animals, and as a result millions are killed by animal control or die by themselves every year. If people would adopt their pets from a rescue or shelter, and not buy from pet stores or breeders, many lives would be saved and a lot of misery would be averted. When most people think about Animal Control shelters, it usually negative. Animal control shelters get an unjust reputation of just being a place where unwanted, problem dogs go to be euthanized. I mean, you call the your local animal control office when you see a stray dog hanging around the neighborhood, right? They show up in a van or truck driven by a uniformed officer who carries a scary looking pole with a loop on it to catch animals. The sad reality is that there are too many homeless pets than there ones with loving homes to care for them. Also according to humane society.org, “2.7 million adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in the United States simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet.” When you adopt, you not only save a life, but you also free up a cage for another desperate animal to be adopted. An animal shelter is a place where stray, lost, abandoned, or surrendered animals, mostly dogs and cats and sometimes sick or wounded wildlife, are brought. Animal shelters are essential in the United States because of inattentive pet proprietorship and uncontrolled breeding of animals. To stop horrible animal abuse and abandonment, you should report the following things according to american humane.org: homeless animals, ungroomed animals, underweight pets, hair loss and other unnatural things seen on pets, not to mention dog/cock fighting or shock collars. There are many problems with abandoning an animal, in some states it is even a crime. Some abandoned animals get sent to testing facilities, to which they will be scarred even further. Another problem with abandoning an animal is that it can become feral, to which a person or child could walk by and get attacked. With nearly millions of animals dying each year from being captive, or endangered species being hunted down and killed, we need to discover a new way of displaying that our world is full of beautiful animals and wildlife. Wild animals are suffering both physically and mentally from the lack of freedom that confinement imposes. These harmful environments are preventing animals from having the opportunity to live in, and be exposed to their natural habitats. Keeping animals imprisoned in cages and small enclosures just for the sake of human observation causes stress and frustration, which is risking animals overall health and well being. These morally unacceptable and cruel actions of retaining wild animals in captivity is certainly wrong.
