The debate over whether marijuana should be legalized or continue to be banned has troubled many American citizens. Marijuana is “the dried leaves and flowers of the hemp plant that are smoked as a drug”. Marijuana is a mood altering drug that has many nicknames, such as pot, weed, sensi, mary jane, herb, and many others. It is an ancient drug that is known from Asia hundreds of years ago. Many cultures have used it during meditation, religious worship, and for intoxication. There is many reason why this drug should be illegal, but there are even more reasons why it should be legal that outweigh the argument against it. So, can the drug marijuana affect a country and the people in a positive or a negative way. How is marijuana harmful? Well …show more content…
First off, how will marijuana help boost our country and economy. “Average annual trade in marijuana is estimated at $113 billion, which represents nearly $45 billion in taxes slipping through our fingers”(Smith.1). If we would tax it an extra $45 billion, this could really help our country financially.”Right now medical marijuana in California brings in 14 billions dollars a year and with legalization it is expected to rise by 4 billion and that’s only in California”(Derek.1). Legalizing marijuana would take it out of the black market which would end the war on marijuana, that is costing the government billions yearly. Legalization would dramatically cut down on prison spending, “an estimated one and four people are in prison solely because of non-violent drug offenses, including possession, sales, and repeat offenses related to marijuana”(Smith.1). A lot of prisons are becoming over populated, this would more than likely cut down on prison space as well. If one will think about pot legalization this can and will create more jobs, because there will be companies that will produce the drug. This would benefit the economy with extra jobs. That is how marijuana could help boost our country and
Since the 1970’s, marijuana has been an extremely controversial drug. While some argue that it does not harm to your body, and can do good in the world, others classify it as a “gateway” drug. As the number states in the U.S. legalize the drug increases, 26 to be exact, the debate is only getting more heated. Also known as weed, cannabis, dope, etc., marijuana has been scientifically proven to do good in the medical world, be safer than alcohol and tobacco, and increase a growth in our economy.
Have you ever wondered when and why marijuana was made illegal? The herbal plant, commonly used in medicines, was not considered a drug in the early 1900s. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 banned the use and sales of marijuana. This act was put in place due to careless slander. Marijuana, in America should be legalized because it is safer than alcohol and tobacco, marijuana funds gangs and cartels, and marijuana can replace toxic, addictive pharmaceuticals.
Cannabis is a drug that is often perceived the wrong way .Throughout history the debate on marijuana has prompted many opposers to question morality and public safety while supporters sermonize cannabis’s healing and relaxing properties .The issue of marijuana use started off in 1930 with the formation of Federal Bureau of Narcotics and its commissioner Harry J. Anslinger (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/dope/etc/cron.html) he headed a campaign that allocated false information to the american people. As well as propaganda to mislead people about the true effects of cannabis .As a result marijuana has been classified as a schedule 1 drug and is illegal throughout the united states with the exception of of a few states who have recently legalized cannabis for medicinal and recreational use. Since marijuana has become illegal it has affected the social life of minorities since they are often prosecuted
Mary-Jane, cannabis, reefer, hash, pot, grass, tree, ganja, dope, chronic, no matter what you call it, they’re all just disguises for the wacky tobaccy. There’s been a recent rise in our country to legalize, and even promote marijuana use. Whether it be for so-called “medical purposes”, or whether it be because it’s our civil liberty, regardless, the citizens of our country are adamant about legalizing cannabis. At first glance, most people might agree. “What harm could some stoners possibly do?”, “They’re going to use it anyway; we might as well tax it.”, “If alcohol and cigarettes are legal, why shouldn’t pot be?” are common statements one may hear from those in favor of legalization. Well, I’m not so easy to convince, and you shouldn’t be either. The facts hidden behind the smoke and mirrors tell a different story, one that doesn’t disguise the ugly truth. Marijuana consumption can have harmful effects on users’ behavior, health, and psyche; it is for those reasons that as a nation we must admit marijuana is not harmless.
Over the past couple of years marijuana has become a huge problem in the United States. From kids to the Elderly; everyone has had some kind of experience with this illegal drug. It is said that it can actually be helpful in some cases. Over the years and until this day research is still being done. Some states have made is legal and some are still working on it.
"Marijuana is an addictive, gateway drug. It significantly impairs bodily and mental functions, and its use is related to increased violence". (Parks 23) Marijuana is a harmful and dangerous drug so why would we legalize it. Legalizing marijuana could ultimately ruin this country and the youth. It causes great harm to people and impairs them greatly. So why would we legalize it? Cannabis is a genus of flowering plant that includes three species or subspecies, sativa, indica, and ruderalis. The drug THC is a compound, C 21 H 30 O 2, that is the physiologically active component in cannabis.
Marijuana use has become one of the most controversial topics in society today. There are a number of positive reasons why people feel the drug is good, but with the pros always comes cons. With this in mind, a number of laws have been created restricting the use of marijuana in the community. Although it is illegal, people still continue to abuse the drug and resort to its history to showcase that its use was once a normal part of life. Marijuana, also known as cannabis, has been used for recreational, medicinal, and religious purposes for thousands of years. Its first known uses are traced all the way back to 2900 B.C. and it is still one of the most commonly used drugs today. The use of marijuana is engrained in our past, and probably will
Not legalizing the use of medical marijuana also known as Cannabis, while keeping harmful substances legal like alcohol and tobacco seems absurd, especially since marijuana is not a harmful to the body. By punishing the use of marijuana, it ruins an individual’s career and economic opportunity; it is a drain on the US economy to have to support the largest prison system due to minor misdemeanors such as the possession of this medicinal plant. Legalizing medical marijuana for its medicinal properties help those people with chronic conditions, decreases the death rate due to pharmaceutical medicines and will boost the economy instead of draining it. The American people will be able to raise the economy and take it off the diminishing path in which it has been going.
In recent years we have seen an increase in support of the legalization of marijuana, both in the medical aspect and recreational. Many states have legalized the use of marijuana and many shops have open across those states, some of those states include: Washington, Colorado, Alaska, and Illinois. Illinois was just recently added to the list this past Monday November 9th. Dispensaries have opened across the state, and lawmakers expect to have at least twenty-five dispensaries across the state at the end of the year. Even though many states have legalized it on the state level, it is still illegal on the federal level.
A drug. A drug can cause addiction. A drug can become a depression. A drug can be used as a medicine. We like to think drugs as something horrible for our bodies. Americans always infer that drugs are the number one ways that lead us to abuse and overdose. What if we legalize marijuana, will it make a big difference? We have legalized cigarette and alcohol use that has been proven to be unsafe, so what is the harm in legalizing marijuana? Marijuana can bring a new form of how we are as free people living in a free country. It will make us believe that in order to maintain this right we need to continue to push boundaries and involve a change into our future. We have pushed boundaries before whether it is with gay rights, wage gap, or even abortion. Now is the time we begin to think about what marijuana could bring to our world.
The legalization of marijuana should be our next big milestone. This plant helps people with anxiety, depression and people with drug problems. These people who have drug problems are sometimes the causes of the crime rate. Marijuana was a relief to many people who are suffering from abuse, loss, regret and stress. Marijuana can be used as an alternative to pills. People with depression and anxiety often are addicted to the pills, and those addictions are one of the leading causes of death today.
In today’s news there have been 26 states that have legalized marijuana use for recreational purposes or medical use. Although there are states where it is not legal, people still use it and there have been arguments whether or not it should be legalized. I, for one, am for marijuana becoming legalized in the state of Kansas. Many people who argue against it are typically conservatives who do not see the benefits of legalizing it. One primary benefit citizens can benefit from legalizing it is a boost in revenue. Even if you don’t use marijuana there will be taxes applied to the sales and those taxes could be used to benefit the state who will help out the community.
It can also create tax revenue and taxable income from the jobs created through the legalization of marijuana. The obvious social and economic benefits are endless, but we can also reason the issue from a more logical standpoint. At its core, the mainstream argument against the legalization of marijuana is that it impairs a persons’ cognitive and locomotive capabilities so it’s understandable, the potential dangers of driving (for example) while under the influence. However, the same can be said of legal substances like alcohol and hookah. When comparing the number of deaths caused by drunk drivers against those caused by drivers under the influence of marijuana, the latter dwindles in comparison. It’s much better to regulate the quantity and the environment in which marijuana is consumed (like alcohol) and leave the responsibility of moderated consumption to the users. Ultimately, people will find ways to obtain things they desire so it’s impractical to spend so much money just make the process harder for
Drugs are a major influential force in our country today. The problem has gotten so out of hand that many people are even considering legalization of one of the most used drugs, marijuana. The legalization of marijuana is a controversial issue that has been fought for and against for several decades. Marijuana is defined as a preparation made from the dried flower clusters and leaves of the cannabis plant, which is usually smoked or eaten to induce euphoria and to heal and soothe.
