Drug use has always been a big problem in the United States, mainly substances such as opiates and cocaine. However, during the earlier part of the 20th century, marijuana became more recognized as a drug producing similar evils. By 1934, the US had passed The Uniform Narcotic Drug Act, which began restrictions on the production and consumption of marijuana. By 1971, President Nixon initiated what we know today as the War on Drugs. This conflict has been a 40 year endeavor that has cost the government upwards of 1 trillion dollars to date, however, it has been by far a very inefficient pursuit. As a matter of fact, the illicit use of marijuana has actually increased since 2007. What the War on Drugs has achieved is the significant increase …show more content…
It can also create tax revenue and taxable income from the jobs created through the legalization of marijuana. The obvious social and economic benefits are endless, but we can also reason the issue from a more logical standpoint. At its core, the mainstream argument against the legalization of marijuana is that it impairs a persons’ cognitive and locomotive capabilities so it’s understandable, the potential dangers of driving (for example) while under the influence. However, the same can be said of legal substances like alcohol and hookah. When comparing the number of deaths caused by drunk drivers against those caused by drivers under the influence of marijuana, the latter dwindles in comparison. It’s much better to regulate the quantity and the environment in which marijuana is consumed (like alcohol) and leave the responsibility of moderated consumption to the users. Ultimately, people will find ways to obtain things they desire so it’s impractical to spend so much money just make the process harder for
There are many ways that marijuana would benefit the economy if legalized. An economy benefits when there is a healthy flow of monies within. This means internal spending by citizens on items of their choice. Citizen spending is what keeps the economy going. The use of citizen?s tax money would also be greatly affected. Tax money would be allocated more properly and used in more strategic ways. The taxation of items such as legalized marijuana brings a flow of money into the economy that would otherwise not be there. This increase of government funds would allocate more money to federal programs that are in financial need. Federal programs include public education, health education, treatment programs, etc. When the public?s way of
Have you ever wondered when and why marijuana was made illegal? The herbal plant, commonly used in medicines, was not considered a drug in the early 1900s. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 banned the use and sales of marijuana. This act was put in place due to careless slander. Marijuana, in America should be legalized because it is safer than alcohol and tobacco, marijuana funds gangs and cartels, and marijuana can replace toxic, addictive pharmaceuticals.
Can you imagine being just six-years-old and suffering from over three hundred violent seizures a week? From birth, Charlotte Figi suffered from a rare form of epilepsy, which caused these seizures. After trying everything to help Charlotte, her parents finally decided to try medical marijuana, and it worked! Charlotte still had seizures, but now, she had maybe two or three seizures a month instead of three hundred a week. Charlotte’s story and many similar stories, along with medical research and sound reasons, have caused the public’s opinion about marijuana to change in favor of legalizing it, and I agree. I strongly believe that marijuana, and especially medical marijuana, should be legalized across the entire
Through the years marijuana has been known by many names, and almost as many opinions have been held concerning its effect on people. Not all of those opinions have been correct in fact; most have been pure propaganda. Marijuana is not a gateway drug. It does not have fatal side effects, and it is not only used by lazy people. These are just some of the stigmas that have plagued marijuana over the years. The truth is that marijuana is a medicinal plant and, as such, should be used to treat medical conditions instead of the chemicals created by big pharmaceutical companies. Though today marijuana still has a negative stigma associated with it, medical marijuana should be legalized nationwide due to its health benefits for those with terminal
Equally important is the effect that marijuana has on the justice system. Resources are being used every day that could be allocated to a number of other pressing issues that are facing communities across the country. If marijuana is legalized, the resources of agencies of law enforcement would be able to focus on much more pressing issues. By legalizing marijuana, it will promote a reduction in street crimes and it will also take business from illegal drug dealers and direct it to the government. This would hopefully lead to a decrease in violence related to drugs in the United States ("Legalization of Marijuana"). Decreasing petty street crime and violence would make local streets safer. That is something that would benefit civilians as
How do you measure happiness? Is your happiness totally dependent on the amount of freedom you have? By guaranteeing us the right to pursue happiness the government doesn’t promise to provide us with it. Government exists solely to grant and protect our freedoms, this includes protecting individuals from being harmed by others exercising their freedoms. The government should not legalize marijuana on the basis that every individual should be free to choose his or her own path to happiness. I am a firm believer in the individual's right to the pursuit of happiness under the constitution; however, I do not believe in the right of achieving immediate gratification at the expense of others.
The fact that Marijuana is still illegal is mind boggling to me. The fact that Marijuana, after being proven to have numerous medical benefits, and being proven to cause little to no harm whatsoever with long term use, is still labeled as a schedule one narcotic, is even more mind boggling to me. State and federal governments spend so much money trying to get rid of marijuana. State and federal government's spend even more locking up these "drug offenders" for the most harmless crime you can commit. This is a free country right ? So why are these marijuana users not free to put whatever it is they desire into their bodies? Now, of course there are violent crimes assosciated with marijuana, however a simple solution to that would be to legalize
Cannabis, also known as marijuana among other names, is a psychoactive drug from the cannabis plant intended for medical and recreational use. The legality of marijuana has been a passionately debated subject for decades. As of 2018, only eight states have marijuana legalized for recreational use. In addition to, there are roughly about twenty-two states that have medical marijuana broadly legalized. Such as the state of new york. Although, the legalization of marijuana will prove beneficial not only for science, people, and economics, but also for planetary properties. However, the legalization of marijuana here in New York can cause many dilemmas such as, it is a gateway drug, it is harmful to the state, and recreational use can be detrimental
More specifically, there now is a change in the attitude toward marijuana and whether or not it should be legalized. During the time of illegalization of marijuana, the drug had a vastly negative feeling associated with it, which many people now believe to be inaccurate and unfair. Now that people are more informed, more connected and more vocal, the United States government should allow and even encourage more research of the dangers and addictive nature of the drug which will assuredly legalize medical use and possibly recreational use to benefit the economy greatly and help the law enforcement.
Marijuana is derived from the dried flower clusters of a stain of hemp pant called cannabis sativa. So, people ingest to induce euphoria, also to treat the certain medical problems. Use of marijuana is termed is prohibited under federal law, but certain jurisdictions allow regulated use for medical purposes. The legalization of marijuana is considered as a controversial matter prevailing throughout the world. Before, in most ancient cultures did not grow the plant to get high, but as an herbal remedy. The hemp plants of marijuana have low levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, the substance accountable for hallucinatory effect. In addition, there is movement to legalize marijuana by supporters for years and able to create momentum across the country. Therefore, Alaska and Oregon has been legally approved to use for any use, however in many states marijuana is allowed for medical use. As the legalization of marijuana can cause crimes, injury, and increase addicted number. However, I strongly believe that marijuana should be legalized as most of the public supports its legalization and it brings billions of dollars in tax revenue and has medicinal values. As, people have been using the marijuana in any manner, and scientifically there is no proven harm to body by it.
Marijuana has been the topic of debate in the United States for decades. With everyone having different views on the drug and its effects, it is indeed illegal as of now in most states and is legal in some such as California and Colorado. Marijuana comes from the leaves of the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. It is a green or gray mixture of dried shredded flowers. It is also referred to by names such as “Mary Jane”, “pot”, “ganja”, “herb”, “weed” and the list goes on. Marijuana smoking has remained stable in adults since the 1990s. Presently, marijuana are used in what are called blunts. Blunts are cigars with tobacco inside of it. The tobacco is emptied and one will fill the blunt with cannabis before smoking. The main active chemical in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). THC is said to binds the membranes of certain nerve cells that has protein receptors. Once this chemical hits the brain cells, it
Wake up America, medical marijuana must be legalized. Medical marijuana should be legalized for its ability to treat epilepsy, its ability to help fight cancer, and its ability to help fight many diseases and symptoms. I truly believe that legalizing medical marijuana will benefit those patients once thought untreatable and left without hope. This may seem like a radical new idea, but is not that what our country was founded on? The idea of marijuana used as a treatment must be seriously considered and not just thrown out as many have already done.
Marijuana is the most popular recreational drug globally and the third in America (Stuart). It is, however, unique because unlike many others recreational drugs, it also has a range of medical uses. The separation of medical from recreational marijuana is a challenging and confusing task, which has affected its legal status significantly. Consequently, nearly half of the United States has legalized marijuana for medical uses while a few others have legalized it both for medicinal and recreational uses. Nonetheless, there are significant reasons that make the legalization of marijuana completely beneficial as a legal recreational and therapeutic drug. Not only would it benefit patients and people using it for recreational purposes but it would
Marijuana in the United States is such a widely conversed topic you will get very different opinions from anyone you talk to. There are those who say it should be legal, and there are those who say it shouldn’t be. Marijuana is widely known throughout the countries and is used whether it is legal or not. Currently in the United States Marijuana is legal for recreational use in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. Marijuana can be taxed and regulated by the government. Marijuana is said to be safer than recreational alcohol consumption. Marijuana also has several health benefits. Although Marijuana is said to be a drug, it should be legalized.
Marijuana is a gateway drug for many people. It is a way for them to get relaxed, to get their mind off things and to relieve stress. Many are trying to legalize the use of marijuana. Marijuana has been a main social issue in many states. Recently, the House of Representatives has passed a bill in 13 states called the “Respect State Marijuana Laws Act of 2013.” This act forbids the federal government from imposing with a state’s marijuana laws. This act will not make it legal, but it will freely allow the state to write their own marijuana laws. Although marijuana can be used for medical benefits, marijuana should not be legalized because of the risk of danger increasing and it falling into the wrong hands, such as children and the unstable,
