Drug use has always been a big problem in the United States, mainly substances such as opiates and cocaine. However, during the earlier part of the 20th century, marijuana became more recognized as a drug producing similar evils. By 1934, the US had passed The Uniform Narcotic Drug Act, which began restrictions on the production and consumption of marijuana. By 1971, President Nixon initiated what we know today as the War on Drugs. This conflict has been a 40 year endeavor that has cost the government upwards of 1 trillion dollars to date, however, it has been by far a very inefficient pursuit. It can also create tax revenue and taxable income from the jobs created through the legalization of marijuana. The obvious social and economic benefits are endless, but we can also reason the issue from a more logical standpoint. At its core, the mainstream argument against the legalization of marijuana is that it impairs a persons’ cognitive and locomotive capabilities so it’s understandable, the potential dangers of driving (for example) while under the influence. However, the same can be said of legal substances like alcohol and hookah. When comparing the number of deaths caused by drunk drivers against those caused by drivers under the influence of marijuana, the latter dwindles in comparison. It’s much better to regulate the quantity and the environment in which marijuana is consumed (like alcohol) and leave the responsibility of moderated consumption to the users. Ultimately, people will find ways to obtain things they desire so it’s impractical to spend so much money just make the process harder for
