In 1999, the state of Connecticut passed a gun seizure law allowing judges to confiscate guns from citizens if the police can provide evidence that the person is a threat to society or to themselves. Within two weeks of the seizure, a hearing must be held which will determine if the gun may be returned to the citizen or if the state will be authorized to hold the gun for up to a year. This law was put into place after four killings with a firearm in 1998 by a mentally ill man. The state of Indiana has a similar law, which was passed in 2005, and two other states, California and New Jersey, are now contemplating the enforcement of regulations like those in Connecticut and Indiana after a mass killing in Santa Barbra, California by a mentally …show more content…

States wish to implement these laws in order to protect the lives of innocent civilians and to take dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands. In the past year alone, Connecticut police have been granted close to two hundred warrants to collect firearms, including those from the home of a man who was spray-painting graffiti on the walls of a high school, referencing the shooting that took place in Newtown and Colorado. More and more shootings have been seen on the news in the past few years, and officials believe that these broadcasts entice people to replicate or devise their own versions of the massacres. This means that gun regulations need to be stricter than ever to be able to keep our country a safe place to live. In contrast, conservatives who believe that their rights should not be violated to any degree have already prevented President Obama from passing a law ordering more thorough background checks for those who are purchasing a gun. If they keep inhibiting our government from passing laws to protect our people, it could mean that these mass murders will continue and our police forces will be too late to stop the murderers responsible for
