Many Americans view drugs of any kind to be deadly or immoral. While there are many harmful, yet legal, medications and other substances that are legal out there, such as alcohol and tobacco, both of which are highly addictive, marijuana is not often considered harmful by any reputable scientific or medical source. Here are a few reasons why marijuana should be legalized for medicinal purposes. Medical marijuana is good for tax revenue which helps the states financially. It is a cheaper option to many medications, which often have critical side effects. Majority of the facts against marijuana use are based mostly on opinion and very little on facts. Several medical professionals believe that by legalizing marijuana not only will people be healthier, but there will also be less addictions and less overdoses on legally prescribed drugs and more disposable tax income to help the country.
Marijuana has a long history when it comes to government involvement. Marijuana was made federally illegal in the 1930s under the Roosevelt administration (Kay 3). Then, in the 1970s Marijuana was labeled as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act, commonly known as CSA. This act placed marijuana alongside heroin, LSD, and MDMA which is often known as ecstasy (“Marijuana”). One push for marijuana to become illegal was because in 1936 the Federal Bureau of Narcotics began claiming it caused “dire mental and moral changes among users” (Hammer 1).
