What is police brutality? Police brutality is the thing where when you look those words up on the internet all you see is Black Lives Matter, racial bias, and misconduct. Police have been beating on and killing black people for years, and many have not served justice for what they have done. It's been going on for so long and has gotten so bad that if a black person gets pulled over they are scared to move just to reach and get their license or talk back to the police when they ask a question. This issue has gone from physical abuse to murdering black people and has been going on for too long. This paper will examine how the inappropriate behaviors and attitudes of police officers breed corruption. Police officers have an oath they have to take which is the Law Enforcement Oath of Honor. “The oath affirms their standards of integrity, bravery, and honor to the community and law (Lourdes, 2017).” The oath varies in different places, for example in Virginia, at the end of the oath “..so help me God” is placed there. Which in many eyes of people, in the United States they are not following their standards. The oath is: “On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character or public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will always uphold the Constitution, my community, and the agency I serve.” As stated in many eyes of people in the United States many police officers do not stick and live by this
Many people know of the police officers of today’s world and that it is their job to enforce the laws set by their government, but not many people know the history of your typical everyday United States police officer or how they came about. The idea for neither your everyday police officer nor his or her department they work for or how a police department operates, originated in the United States. Over the years though America has made changes and adapted its system over the years to make it more suitable for its countries beliefs and practices.
Law enforcement leaders must be continually vigilant to ensure that the actions of their officers do not violate civil rights and do not compromise public support. The individual officer is granted a tremendous amount of authority and discretion to enforce the law. Their ultimate duty is to protect individual rights from being infringed upon by others in the community. They must never consider themselves above the law while executing their responsibility to enforce the law. This commitment is what distinguishes police in constitutionally based, democratic societies like ours from police in nondemocratic countries, where they are perceived as oppressive agents of a government whose main purpose is to restrict, rather than protect, the rights of civilians (International Association of Chiefs of Police, 2006).

There have been many debates about police brutality. One argument suggests that the police use appropriate force since they are dealing with criminals, while minorities believe that the police abuse their power. African Americans are portrayed as violent criminals and their criminal backgrounds are used against them, while the police use their position to go around the criminal justice system. We're a nation that heavily believes in the ideals of equality, and by not addressing the issue of police brutality in our government, our government will become disorderly. The 14th Amendment states “...nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” This means that states must apply the law equally to everyone and cannot discriminate against anyone because of their race. The idea of equality, equal protection under the law and equal opportunity, is an ideal solely found in America. However, by having the contradiction of a police force that uses underhanded tactics to suppress another race we don’t live up to our country’s promise.
There are few professions in the United States that are entrusted with protecting society’s safety and system of laws that have been established throughout the course of American history. One of those professions is that of a police officer. It is an admirable calling for an individual to deal with criminals and place themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis. When you take oath to become a law enforcement officer you are supposed to stand by the area that you work within and serve and protect. While working officers are put in thousands of different scenarios. While growing up you are taught proper ethics and values and should know the difference between what is right, and what is wrong. However; many officers break down and realize that being a law enforcement officer doesn’t pay as much as they like. They fall fortune to being greedy, stealing money, and even getting into the drug trade while they are in uniform. In the end these men and women that put on the uniform are just as bad as the drug dealers who sling dope on the corner. Police brutality is another big issue within law enforcement. At times police overuse the necessary amount of force that is needed and end up injuring and even at times killing another individual. These officers are also just as guilty as the ones that they have been placing under arrest.
I will protect our country no matter
There is an existence of police culture and perception where officers only give effort in order to practice authority and manipulate other beings (Chicago, 1997). Aside from being an officer, some officers wanted the position in order to control laws. Improper behavior among the police force is usually not just a cause of single individual but a group of individual. As mention in Chicago Citizen, this kind of conduct resulted to blue wall of silence which protect officers who made mistakes specifically brutality and improper behavior. The blue wall of silence usually cover up these people from judgment and prosecution, however, a lot of people acknowledge the abuse, improper behavior and harshness.
An important objective of the police officers, is to protect and serve the community and the best way to do that is to enforce ethics. According to the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, there are four different dilemmas, “discretion (legality), duty (service), honesty, and loyalty” (Pollock). When an officer has been taught these different ethics and is able to use each one of them when deciding to pull their gun out and shoot or beat a suspect after they stopped resisting, this incorporates a better relationship between the officers and the community. Policing is a very hard field and all aspects need to be remember. The oath of police officers is to protect and serve and that’s what every American expects police officers to do. “It’s one thing to let your enthusiasm for aggressive police work wane in the face of unjust criticism and treatment, but it’s your duty and your obligation as a cop to protect the innocent, even if it comes at great personal risk. You don’t have to recklessly throw yourself into harm’s way or take foolish risks, but you must be ready to do your duty and must never shirk it. Not everyone can be a cop or assume a cop’s burden — that’s what makes you and this profession so special” Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Mike Wood said. Meaning you chose to be a cop for a reason, yes there may be days when you second guess yourself because of all the crimes going on around you. God didn’t chose you for nothing. People throughout America are being harassed by police. This type of violence is police brutality, which often leads to death. Police brutality has been an issue for many years, and it remains a major concern for people depending on the area or the ideology of the people in that community. The ability for authorities to have so much power must end now to better the communities across the world. The government applied rules to help decrease this havoc by placing new technology, strict rules applied to the authorities, and strict consequences they will have to deal with if found guilty. Although the government has set better standards to help this situation; many officers most likely will continue to be brutal.
