Minorities are more likely to experience police brutality such as being pulled over by the cops without reason, being roughly patted down, grabbed, handcuffed, struck with a baton or pressed up against a wall than whites are, a new study by Roland Fryer, a professor of economics at Harvard University, has found. Most Americans were not speaking about police brutality or trying to fix it until Kaepernick and many other began to protest. Many other athletes have since refused to stand for the national anthem for similar reasons. “Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, who also has knelt during the national anthem, said, "the message is I'm against social injustice... This shows that the social injustice happening in America is a reason to not force citizens of America to stand. Citizens should not be forced to stand, this would be like muzzling their voice and preventing to protest against the injustice facing America. Although Colin Kaepernick and many other people refuse to stand for the National Anthem, because of social issues happening in America some believe this is not just. Some people believe Refusing to stand for the national anthem shows disrespect for the flag and members of the armed forces. They believe the national anthem pays respect to the people who have risked their lives, been injured, or died defending the United States.

People believe that police officers use their powers and their badge to hold them to a higher standard then the average civilian. I belief that its all up to interpretation and the many experiences we go through that define a bad cop from a good one. If we judge all police officers from one bad cop how do we expect to change? How can we trust the ones that’s killing us? Law enforcement and police officers play a major role in our community. They help those in need & keep us safe. Nationwide they also kill an average of 3 people every day. I thought whenever you become an officer, you have sworn to protect us. Police brutality is a major issue in our society today. Police work is dangerous. In the past, police officers were considered peacekeepers. Police have been occupied in shootings, severe beatings, and unnecessarily rough treatments to our people instead of focusing on protecting us. Racism has always been the main cause of police brutality. Black men are constantly harassed by the police and routinely brutalized even when they have done nothing wrong.
The United States was founded in 1776 and founded on the fact is was a free nation that welcomed all to come and join the democracy. We know this not to be true. The free nation was more of an idea than a fact. Freedom was for white men who owned land, does not sound very free to me. Slavery was still legal until 1865 with the 13th amendment. Even then it was still legal if it is “a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted” (“13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution”). This mean prisoners can be used as “slaves”. This was famously seen in the film “Shawshank Redemption”. Another example is the mistreatment of minorities by police officers. Although the U.S. government is supposed provide freedom, it does oppress certain groups of its citizens.
Usually the National Anthem is performed when attending graduations, football, basketball, baseball games and more. Everyone is expected to stand during the time the song is being played. But if one chooses not to stand there is no problem with that. Being that Americans should not be forced to stand for the National Anthem because of the high rates of police brutality against blacks, it displays racism towards blacks, and this is a way individuals can exercise their freedom of speech.

We're a nation that heavily believes in the ideals of equality, and by not addressing the issue of police brutality in our government, our government will become disorderly. The 14th Amendment states “...nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” This means that states must apply the law equally to everyone and cannot discriminate against anyone because of their race. The idea of equality, equal protection under the law and equal opportunity, is an ideal solely found in America.
