There have been many attempts to make racial profiling illegal, but all have failed. Racial profiling is defined as suspecting an individual of a wrongdoing based solely on the individual’s race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin (Racial Profliling: Definition 2). Racism spreads throughout all dimensions of life in American society; therefore, the history of racial profiling is extensive, but it was at an all-time high after the September 11th attacks (Persistence of racial and ethnic profiling in the United States: a follow-up report to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 10). It can be used in both positive and negative aspects, but is mostly used negatively. Racial profiling negatively effects society and the very existence of racial profiling is erroneous, discriminatory, and unjustifiable.

Racial profiling is a law enforcement and security agency practice that encourages officers to stop, search, and investigate people based on race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. While racial profiling is most commonly committed against ethnic minorities, many instances of racial profiling occur in reaction to specific crimes, making any racial or cultural group subject to more intensive scrutiny by the authorities. Many People think of racial profiling as relatively recent phenomena that manifested in the 1980s, as the news of Blacks being pulled over for “driving while black” began making national headlines. The legal dictionary definition is the consideration of race, ethnicity, or national origin by an officer of the law in deciding when and how to intervene in an enforcement capacity. (Law Dictionary, n.d.) Sadaris’ definition, targeting a person according to certain stereotypical characteristics or assumptions learned or observed, using one’s own personal discretion.

“Racial profiling describes the practice of targeting or stopping an individual based primarily on his or her race rather than any individualized suspicion” as illustrated by Warren of Sage journals. Racial profiling is the use of race or ethnicity as reasons for suspecting someone of having committed an offense. African-Americans have been fighting what seems to be a never ending battle against oppression and racism. Over the years 2012-2015, reports of police killing unarmed black men in America have been alarming.

Predominately, the wage gap between white men and black men is an ongoing issue that is linked to preconceptions. Additionally, the achievement gap in the classroom has seen disparities that have prevented black men from having the necessary foundation to be successful. Ultimately, racial profiling has most notably been exposed by the actions of law enforcement and the criminalization of black men. In Dominique Morisseau’s “Night Vision”, the character Ayana reveals how racial profiling black men has integrated itself into the subconscious, which has surfaced in negative impacts on economic, education, and legal outcomes in America.

Racial profiling is the act of accusing a victim of a crime based on the color of their skin. Now, this seems pretty horrible, but this action of “preventing crime is used widely across the world and hurts millions of people. Whether it’s a store clerk following a child around a gas station or a police officer shooting over an innocent black man racial profiling is an issue. It comes down to the very ethics of being human. An officer can not judge a person based on their race on what they’re going to do. Racial profiling destroys the very rights a person is born with by judging them to be a “criminal” without giving the person a chance to prove them otherwise. While the argument might state that it prevents crime, there is a limitless amount of examples that show that this is hurting an entire group of people just based on something they can't even control.
