The biggest driving distraction today is texting and driving, almost everyone does it, even if it’s against the law. In the state of Kansas driving while texting is illegal, it can lead up to a fifty dollar fine. Also for anyone who doesn’t have a full driver's license, any cell phone use is prohibited while driving. Talking on the phone while driving might not seem that bad, but it can still distract the driver, especially when using only one hand to drive. “At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving, a number that has held steady since 2010.” (The Dangers of Distracted Driving) The number of people who think it’s okay to text and drive is enormous, they don’t seem to understand that it’s impossible to multitask. The brain can only focus on one task at a time, whenever people are texting they are not focused on driving. This leads to many accidents and puts everyone’s lives in danger if drivers are not aware of their surroundings they will cause an accident. Distracted driving; most of us are guilty of it without even knowing it. Distracted driving is doing anything else unrelated to driving while behind the wheel. This could include: using a cell phone, changing the radio station, eating food, and even having a conversation. The most distracting of them all is using a cell phone because it requires the user to manually input information. The laws surrounding texting while driving are far too lenient when compared to laws on drunk driving, yet both can end in a car crash. People texting while driving should face steeper penalties than what is already in place because they are a danger to anyone around them. The small fines are not enough to deter people. While banning cell phones from being allowed in vehicles is not an effective approach to the problem, stricter laws should be put in place to make the roads a safer place. Texting while driving penalties should be treated with a similar severity that DUI charges are. The penalties for texting and driving need to be increased because it would make the roads safer, increase the government’s revenue, and help solve the problem of texting while driving.
We all are probably aware that texting and talking on the phone is a distraction to all drivers and can be very dangerous. Also, we all know there are many other distractions besides texting and driving, and any type of technology can cause a driver to be distracted. Forty-one percent of all drivers use their hands to text in the car while driving, according to Greg Gardner (52). It can cause people to forget about pedestrians or their surrounding areas. People who are distracted often aren’t focused and don’t have both hands on the wheel. According to Bryan Wilson, people may say that cell phones are easy to be pointed out as a problem, but statistics show the damage cell phones can do to a person while they are driving (6). According to Simon Usborne, time spent not looking at the road while talking on the phone is 15% of the time (68). Also, while texting and driving the time spent not looking at the road is 30% of the time (Usborne 69). As technology improves more and more people may feel the need to use their cell phones while driving. According to Melissa Healy, cell phone use can be as dangerous as drunk driving (42). Tests should be done to compare the various ways of sober people under the influence driving also to compare the impact of texting and driving. This would give us a better understanding of just how dangerous driving and being on our phone really is.

You’ve probably heard someone say, “Don’t Text and Drive” at least once or even an abundance. I hear it all the time but seriously, why do people feel the need to utilize their phones while driving? Are they more focused on texting someone back or the actual road? Texting while driving is an intensely menacing thing somebody could possibly perform. Texting and driving don’t suit together and it should stand illegal. Many innocent people’s lives are placed into danger when someone decides to text while driving. I was one of those innocent people once when someone decided to text while driving and it left an immense effect on me which led me to change my mind in a fundamental way about this texting and driving issue.
Texting while driving is becoming now a controversial issue. The fact that people send or read messages while they are on the road is causing accidents and problems for both, the drivers and the people around them. Despite all the laws that have been created just the minority is listening and paying attention to this. In my opinion, people need more education concerning all this. They need to realize once and for all that these recently laws are not here without a purpose. There are many methods in order to reduce this big argument, the thing is that not everybody shares the same interest.

Distracted people will crash, and innocent people will die.
Distracted driving is a modern issue that needs to be dealt with. Today, many students would not be able to bear a day without their beloved cell phones. They are constantly texting and using social media; driving is often no exception for answering their latest snapchat. This practice is certainly a problem due to the fact that it causes harm to people on the road by putting them in unnecessary danger. According to Harvey Simon, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, people who text and drive are 23% more likely to get into an accident than non-distracted drivers. This is an alarming statistic due to the fact that I rarely drive anywhere without seeing at least one person on their phone while driving. Driving is an activity that occurs everyday. People need to drive in order to get where they need to be on time and this is not going to change anytime soon. By not giving all of one’s undivided attention to this task, people are being put into danger regardless of if they are texting and driving or not. In 2010 a study was done that concluded that about 15% of crashes involving fatalities in the United States were caused by a cell phone being used while someone was driving (“Distracted
