The Java House, located on East Washington Street in Iowa City, Iowa is a major study hub for students attending the University of Iowa. The founder, Tara Cronbaugh, opened the first Java House locations in 1994 after taking a trip to The University of California, Berkeley and developing a fascination with coffee house ambience. Cronbaugh admired the relaxing, yet social environment of the coffee houses on Berkeley's campus. She felt she had a mission to bring that same ambience to a place back in Iowa City for the students at The University of Iowa. Since then, hundreds of University students visit the Java House every week to enjoy a wide range of beverages or homemade pastries. However, The Java House has become much more of a study …show more content…
It makes logical sense to allow a table to be open for students who genuinely need to be there.
Another way The Java House convinces students at The University of Iowa to get their coffee to go if they aren’t going to study is by appealing to pathos, or emotions. The Java House engages all the senses to promote a studious environment. Immediately entering the coffee shop, one will notice it is dimly lit, with a darker color scheme and warm-toned antique furniture. The color scheme, as well as the lighting, invoke a sense of relaxation into University of Iowa student customers that is perfect for studying and not so much for socialization. Although many students have earbuds or headphones in, low volume, calm music plays throughout the shop. The music volume and genre allow for students to stay on task and not to get distracted easily. The subtle smell of coffee also engulfs the whole shop, creating an even more relaxing atmosphere. Lastly, when looking around one will notice the vast majority of students are doing school work. All the senses work together to communicate that The Java House is a quiet, relaxing environment ideal for studying and productivity, not for friendly get-togethers or dates. Therefore, if that was a student’s intention they should get their coffee and go somewhere else more lively, fun, or casual, so they could better enjoy themselves and make sure not to disturb or distract those working at The Java House.

In the wake of Hurricane Maria that struck Puerto Rico, the mayor of San Juan has accused President Trump of not providing sufficient relief efforts to the U.S island. On Saturday September 30, Trump sent a series of tweets saying that, "The mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump. Such poor leadership ability by the mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job."
Most often, people will face numerous difficulties and challenges in their lifetime. These adversities impact and help play a role in shaping a person’s identity. People may view adversities as roadblocks that are impossible to overcome, while others view them as challenges that will only strengthen themselves. The overall effect of these adversities is the strengthening of a person's identity. People will gain more knowledge and therefore become strong in their identity. In the modern prose drama A Doll’s House, Henrik Ibsen demonstrates how adversities impact people. It also shows how people become stronger when they overcome the adversities placed before them. The adversities that Nora, Krogstad, and Mrs. Linde face
A monstrous earthquake shook Nepal on April 25th, this year. It killed more than 8,000 people and the earthquake was so powerful, it may have shrunk Mount Everest. The famous peak lost almost about an inch according to U.S. analysis of satellite data. Chinese data suggests that the mountain has not shrunk; it has only been shifted a few centimeters. Mount Everest still remains the highest mountain in the world at twenty-nine thousand twenty nine feet above sea level. Scientists were not surprised by the movement, though. “While these quakes may have lowered Everest the ongoing plate motion that created the Himalayas will increase Everest’s height over the long term,” says Susan Owen, a NASA scientist in California.
Books varying from small to large are precisely organized on bookshelves that line the room while various tables and couches are scattered throughout the expansive room. One student is franticly pounding on his keyboard while the girl next to him is contemplating her thoughts, paging through her textbook while listening to her earbuds, eyeing up the Keurig in the corner of the room. Leaned back into this back aching hardwood chair, I observe the two students nearby me; they each have a different expression on their face. One is pleasured by the smell of the coffee that spilled out of the Keurig into her cup, while the other student is fixed on typing his essay, a sweat drop trickling down his face. Gazing at each student my mood changed, I
Why do married couples argue? Nora and Torvald, a married couple argue due to deceit and non-realistic love. A Doll’s House is a modern culture play, written by Henrik Ibsen in 1879. The play takes place in a time of modernism when men were the head of most households and gender roles were very important. Torvald and Nora Helmer seem to be a happy couple with three children at the start of the play.
As I sit in this Starbucks observing my surroundings for this paper, I instantly span out into listening to what’s around me. At a first listen, I can blatantly hear the blenders making a drink for the customers that comes and go. I also hear the coffee makers making a specific sound that tells the barista that the coffee is ready. This sounds that I’m listening too quickly makes me imagine the smell of the warm coffee that the barista has prepared. This quick listening experience I realize that this is a top-down processing in my head. The specific sound of the coffee makers quickly ignites my other senses to know that a cup of coffee has been made. This listening experiment has also made me feel closer to my surroundings. As my surrounding in this particular Starbucks is predominately college students, I am quick to realize that I am in a comfort space. I feel like I’m in my normal habitat that I’m used to being surround my people who are serious about their education.
Located between the Banda and Timor Sea, lies a small nation called Timor-Leste a.k.a. East Timor, which is part of an island known as Timor. In 1520, the Portuguese were first settling into Timor; a little before the year 1860, Portugal and Netherlands fought for the land of Timor but with an 1860 treaty, it divided Timor into West and East Timor. East Timor was given to the Portuguese while West Timor belonged to the Netherlands. After 455 years of Portugal colonizing East Timor, Portugal suddenly withdrew their rule which lead the island to be completely vulnerable. On July 7th, 1976, East Timor had declared their independence; but nine days later, Indonesia (West Timor), invaded and annexed East Timor. Although many of the countries didn’t

If you can tolerate Kim Kardashian, then you are a better person than I am. Her reality TV series has taken on a life of its own, and so has her Kimoji. Kimoji is practically just Emoji, which are the smileys that are used in electronic messages.
In the late 1800s, millions of immigrants arrived in the United States for various reasons. Some sought for religious freedom, others looked for job opportunities to support their families. They came with great hopes, hoping that they would eventually become wealthy and their future generations didn’t have to suffer like them. However, when they arrived in the country, they often faced many hardships such as language problems and poverty. They were also prejudiced by the nativists. According to them, immigrants would take their jobs away and harm the society. As a result, it led to national wide debates about whether the U.S. “golden door” should remain open or limit future immigration. In fact, various evidence pointed
Dreaming about a seemingly unachievable goal is easy, but there are people who persevere no matter the odds to achieve their goal and make their dream come true. President John F. Kennedy and Susan B. Anthony fought against seemingly impossible odds and made their dreams come true for the greater good of humanity. They both overcame all the challenges that were thrown on them, regardless of the difficulty. President John F. Kennedy and Susan B. Anthony likely encountered the most overwhelmingly difficult challenges of their lives and they were both filled with determination to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans and people abroad.
It’s time for change across the nation. Bullying has been a problem for a millennia, however, in recent years, it has now been focused mostly at schools. There are school policies in place to both punish and prevent bullying from happening. Anti-Bullying strategies aren’t enough to be properly used by the nation successfully and need to be changed. Rules need to be altered for better ones.
We jumped. We played. We screamed. We tried to kill each other. Bloodthirsty, 1 person was the monster. The rest tried to survive. It was a game that kinda went like duck duck goose. But if I would have known what would happen next, I never would have sat down. Never would have put my hands under me. Never would have played that game that day.
I selected the Loafe Cafe at UBC to study while doing this write up. From previous encounters, I have noticed it to be a very rich and intriguing cafe to become an observer of. There were many compelling observations I made which caused me to realize the amount of connections this course has to everyday life as a student and member of society. In this day and age, our interactions, daily vernacular, and social presence have all been affected and in some ways shaped by media.
