In United States history, a major conflict in the 1900s started with the introduction of the 18th Amendment stating the prohibition of alcohol. “The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. However, this was not the case until 1984, when the National Minimum Drinking Age Act required the 50 states to raise their drinking age to 21 or lose 10 percent of their federal highway money. While this was expected to prevent the dangerous behavior, it actually has made young Americans more likely to binge-drink” (Warvin and Hall 1). Thus, causing a problem with underage drinking. Being drafted into the army unexpectedly can cause those plans to either be ruined or put on hold. Serving in the armed forces is highly rewarding, but it is not right to be forced. Army recruiters jump from school to school talking to students about life in the army and talking to the ones who are interested in serving that is already eighteen or those who are about to be. This is done the right way and should be used worldwide. Turning eighteen for men means their lives are enormously changing because they do not know when or where they will be if they get drafted for the military without wanting to be. Consuming alcohol is not as big of a responsibility as going and fighting for a country. Getting married is a life-long commitment between two individuals who are compassionate about one another. Individuals can choose to be with another human for the rest of their being at eighteen but can’t even celebrate legally with alcohol. Once a marriage license is signed and legal, it is really hard to back out. A divorce can cost just as much as a small wedding does. Finding a good lawyer takes even more time and coming up with all the money can take some time as well. After it is all said and done, American’s can legally get married at eighteen before they know what they are going to do next in life.
