Julie Brooks loves volunteering at the women’s shelter in San Antonio, Texas. Having suffered through her own abusive relationship, she’s ready to do anything she can to help other women trapped in a similar situation. Getting caught between a woman and her abusive husband, however, is more than she expected.

I have always believed that it is a great idea to volunteer, especially if it helps the community. Volunteering can really make an impact on the community. Volunteering can definitely create empowerment. I believe that everybody at least once should choose to volunteer somewhere or place that helps a cause that they believe in. After reading the article, I started to better understand volunteerism. It’s very great for people to put in time in exchange for feeling great for helping someone or something within the community. Depending on the cause, it is very possible someone will come head to head with some pretty heart-wrenching situations. As a role as a volunteer, you can expected to keep a calm and positive demeanor.

Question: “Women received the vote based on their contribution to the war effort”. How accurate is this view that women gained the vote based solely on war work? 20 marks

A large number of incarcerated women report high rates of abuse, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse (Wolff, Frueh, Shi, Schumann, 2012). This writer recently started to conduct individual substance abuse counseling to women incarcerated at the Hendry County Jail. During the time of speaking to these women, a common factor has arisen, that is the fact that most of these women have been involved in some sort of domestic violence. Although there are women’s jail groups available throughout the country, there are not enough of these groups that focus on battered women. This writer proposes to incorporate a battered women’s in jail group that will focus on helping those women who are incarcerated and who have been involved in domestic violence throughout their lifetime.

Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote goodness or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. Volunteering is a renowned skill for development and socialization which has positive benefits for the volunteer as well as for the person or community served. One well-known benefit is that it is used to make contacts for future employment, but Haupt explains another benefit. Volunteering has become a new science when in relation to when a person is hurt. In “Volunteering Does a Body Good” published in 2010 by U.S. News & World Report, Angela Haupt supposes a great correlation between volunteering and making one’s self feel better with the narration of Brooke Ellison, the organization of the essay, the sources used, and the careful language.

     During the colonial period, granted the role of homemaker and mother, a woman was the center of the household. A woman was to immerse herself into the home and subordinate herself to her husband. However, as time progresses and the nineteenth century opens, the woman begins to work outside the home and emerges to breathe the air of freedom and self-determination.

     Throughout United States history oppression of people has always been prominent, whether through African American’s and segregation or Asian American’s during the Vietnam War. What is often ignored is our history of the oppression of women. No matter what time in history, there is always a case to be found of the discrimination over gender. Many people know of how African American’s came into freedom and the long perilous road it took, but few know the struggles, changes and hardships that women have perceived to get where they are today. Women are considered second-class citizens when compared to men who dominate positions of power in the United States. From a political standpoint, there is a common misconception that women are unable or unfit to serve in public office. Regardless of gender, every voting American possesses the potential to assert themselves and participate in our democracy. The outcome of the U.S. 2016 presidential election demonstrates how women are still negatively viewed and discriminated against by gender bias. As evidence of this, in the United States Congress, women hold just 84 (19.3%) of the 435 House of Representative seats, with only 20 women (20%) in the United States Senate (Rutgers, 2016). This is a startling statistic considering that women possess the same rights as men to run for political office and represent one-half of the U.S. population.

The women’s suffrage is a major reform movements in the 1800’s. It was a movement for women’s rights and freedoms. “They are both moral and accountable beings, and whatever is right for a man to do, is right for women to do” (pg 283). Everyone is created equal it stated. No one else was above anyone else. The Grimké sisters, Sarah and Angelina, are the one’s who spoke up and got active about this movement. They stated that women had social & legal limitations that limited their participation. The leaders of this movement along with the Grimké sisters were Catherine Beecher, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, & Dorothea Dix. Many accepted this factor, others did not. The women worked on many movements, but didn’t help because, they could not vote. The Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 in New York, was to discuss the women’s rights. There it became the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, “All men and women created equal”. The battle for women to have the right to vote was won in 1920.

Every 98 seconds an American is sexual assaulted across America. 1 in 6 American women have been raped or an attempted rape. According to RAINN 4 in 10 women have had an abortion, while 1 in 8 maternal deaths are caused by unsafe abortion. Women’s rights are human rights, around the world women are being denied rights, here in America women don’t have equal pay, rights over their own bodies are in converse, in Africa and the middle east, girls and women are being stolen from their homes and from their schools. Women’s rights are an important topic because women’s rights are human rights, this should matter to all people because this issue is a social injustice all round the world, that has negatively affected women for years. Women should have the same rights as men because many women face systematic oppression, many women are despotism relation to their male counterparts, and the general population is unaware of the seriousness of the issues.

The struggle for equality has been intense, and still continues to this day. With this being said, much progress has been made in establishing respect and external acceptance for all individuals sense of identity. For example, in 2015 the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Same Sex Marriages, marking a pivotal point in the civil rights movement for the LGBTQ community. For many, this act helped to support their sense of self, a right that been denied for so long. The United States effectively validated the LGBTQ community, giving this group all rights granted to all other citizen’s, However, the creation and acceptance of this community has not had positive benefits for all members.
