Everyday women are abused by a spouse or a partner, resulting in homelessness or no place to go. The organization in south Texas, the women’s shelter, opened their doors to me in hopes that I might further my knowledge of abused women and even children. It was a challenging obstacle to face, but an eye-opening experience. Despite the emotional effect that working with the abused women might inflict, I learned how to handle the pressure of seemingly impossible situations. Volunteering taught me how to empathize with the women who need more sympathy than most. Stated in this article, “Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer” (Segal).
This sentence states that volunteering can not only benefit the recipients of the Women’s Shelter of South Texas, but also improve the overall well being of myself regarding the fact that volunteering improved many physical and mental aspects within myself. Segal, the author, states within the article that,“Volunteering and helping others can help you reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose” (Segal). I feel as though I have a stronger purpose about using my resources and time in a way that is beneficial to the women. I believe that volunteering should benefit both the giver and the receiver with every aspect of it. In addition to the empathy towards the recipients of the volunteering,
