Persuasive Essay: School Districts Should Discard After School Sports

Almost all student athletes get butterflies before that Friday night football game, before the fans get to watch them compete, or even the to get the ability to practice. Many argue that high school sports are a distraction in the classroom or even cause career ending injuries. There are many different scenarios that prove that high school sports do the exact opposite of those. When it comes to high school sports, it keeps students fit, boosts a student’s academic performance, and enhances a student’s self-esteem. High school sports are very beneficial and for anyone who is looking to take on a new challenge to take on.

Since students already spent a great amount of time on school they should not participate in sports after school . Students should not spend more time on physical activities that are not needed rather than homework that will help with grades in school. Therefore, schools should not have after school sports because it will improve student’s grades, give them more time for homework, and schools will save money.

She also says that during out of town games, schools provide transportation for teams, cheerleaders, band, meals, and hotels (Ripley 11). These facts reveal that extracurricular sports waste an outrageous portion of a school’s already quite limited budget and it is absolutely critical to put that money towards updating the campus and creating a better learning environment. Ultimately, if institutions don’t stop squandering their money on after school athletics, the future of education will be a grim one.

Students are expected to work their hardest. Schools will recruit the athletes who will work to keep up their academics and performance. I believe we should get rid of after school sports, because schools are going over budgets, and kids are getting distracted from school. Yes many people believe we should keep sports because they help students relieve stress and help students relax; but they have caused schools to go over budget and scholars grades have dropped.Therefore, schools should get rid of after school sports because districts cannot afford them, kids are getting distracted, and scholars grades will improve.

I believe that High school football should be limited. Kids could get very sincere results from the concussions and the effects from playing football that could change their lives. Doctors say head concussions for younger kids are worse and more damaging because their brains are not fully grown and that means they can’t fully heal yet and younger kids younger kids have weaker neck muscles so their necks might break trying to brace for impact of another person while tackling for the ball or their heads smashing back into their helmets while going against someone (blocking someone).

As anyone that wants to go to college knows that studying is key. In Amanda Ripley’s Article, she said that ¨The first semester, 80 percent of students passed their classes¨(10). She also stated that only 50 percent of students passed their classes before school sports were canceled (Ripley 11). Canceling school sports helps get students more time to study and focus on getting their work done. If you get involved in school sports, you can lose time to study, so use your time wisely to help you do better.

After school sports are a big thing in America. Although students cherish these activities; numerous studies have shown that students get better grades if they drop out of sports. Therefore, schools should get rid of after-school sports because they are expensive, students will get better grades, and athletics is a distraction from school work.

One reason we should keep school sports is because it benefits the mind and body. For example, in part two of the article, “No! Sports Are More Important Than Ever” states, “According to a 2013 report from the institute of medicine, physically active kids have more focus, are better problem solvers, and score higher on tests.” This proves that sports benefit the mind. After school many kids go straight home to their phones; however, with sports, after school they go straight into a fun, healthy activity that benefits the mind and body.

Distractions are massive, multiple students can spend long hours practicing for a game. According to Amanda Ripley “students can play long night games and they can go to late night pep rallies” (11). University's even think that “kids do better in schools when there are later start times than having to wake up usually for athletic practice before 8 a.m. ” (11). This shows that many kids are getting distracted playing sports than doing school work. This is important because now you know how distractions from school sports can affect students in your neighborhood.

Amanda Ripley states that, “In the spring of 2012, Premont Independent School District threatened to take out all sports,” she goes on to say that, “sports are embedded in American schools in a way they are not almost anywhere” (10). Amanda Ripley states that, ever since Premont took out sports, “80% of students passed their classes, compared with 50% the previous fall” (Ripley 11). It shows that without school sports, students pass more classes. Clearly, without sports students pass more classes and are able to focus on school.

After school sports might be fun, but it is not helping the students at all. The games themselves might reduce stress levels; but it has been shown that schools tend to spend more on the fields and the bleachers then should actually be spent. A school was almost shut down because of the academic failures, but somehow still had equipment to play games. Therefore, schools should get rid of after school sports because they spend too much money on them, America is lacking academily compared to other countries, and they pay too much attention to the games.

Oh great. Another bad day at school. Good thing we have basketball practice, today, to ease my mind. This is how some people think about sports. However, some do not think the same. Therefore, middle schools are deciding on whether to keep sports the same way they have been or scale back some on sports. Principals and superintendents should not scale students back on sports because it helps them prosper in many ways.

The article explains that sports dictate when the school day should begin so there is more practice time for teams after school (Ripley 11). A former student from Premont states that “there was all this extra time” and “you never get behind on work” (Ripley 11). This shows that even the students from the high school agreed that with no athletic programs, they had more time to work on assignments. This is a significant change to what schools would be getting if they had school sports.
