Persuasive Speech : A Speech For Animal Testing

Today I am going to talk to you about why exactly animal testing is unethical and unnecessary, and what you all as an audience can do to make this happen.

While some have heard stories of animal testing, many are oblivious to how harsh the effects of the testing are. Ensuring the safety of makeup and other beauty products is definitely important, but the tests used today are inhumane and ineffective, but it is in the hands of the beauty industry to make the changes necessary to end it. Cosmetic companies should refrain from testing on animals because the tests are no longer necessary and they inflict unneeded pain on animals.

Moreover, animal testing is a cruel and inhumane way to torture and kill animals for mankind’s own benefit. For instance, every day animals are discarded like yesterday’s trash. The Humane Society International gave an approximate outlook on animals that are murdered by stating, “An estimated 100,000-200,000 animals are killed in cosmetic laboratories each year” (“About Cosmetics Animal Testing” 1). Although, some will argue that it is worth the kill to make shampoo, makeup, etc., harmless to humans; however, animals shouldn't be used for something as non-essential as cosmetics. I have always felt strongly about animal rights, and cruelty to animals, so I decided to do my speech on something less talked about and often avoided, which is animal vivisection- in other words, animal testing. The public are blinded by cover ups and lies that make animal testing seem a lot better than it really is which is why I think it is important to get all the facts out there and why I think it should be banned.

The majority of people believe animal testing is dreadfully wrong. As animal testing becomes a popular conversation argument, the main altercation is how unjust and crooked it is. Companies especially those in the makeup industry, have gained popularity and admiration for wiping out animals testing for their products even though the products have actually been tested before put out on the market. Animal testing is now grasped as an abhorrent business, but what others do not realize is that without animal testing, the medical world and other productions would not be as advanced as it is today. Even though it seems as though the cons outweigh the pros, there is definitely a balance between them. Animal testing can save human lives and the medications tested on animals can also become a medication for animals if it works; however, some animals contract diseases easier than humans and can suffer because of this testing.

Everyday cosmetic products that many people use, such as lipsticks, shampoo, face wash, etcetera, are verified to be safe using animal testing. Chemical burns and other short term ailments are very serious concerns that plague Americans and the knowledge that the products they use will not harm them and their families is possible because of animal testing. When was the last time you bought makeup? Or even more specifically when was the last time you bought makeup that was tested on animals? Each year in Australia alone, over 100 million animals will die from exposure to commercial animal testing or in simpler terms, animal cruelty that is commonly disregarded as it is just ‘’science’’. However, product testing on animal is extremely unethical and is pure cruelty. Here is why we need to stop this mistreatment immediately.

Everyone has probably worn or has owned something animal tested, whether they’ve known it or not. Animal testing has been around since the early ADs but was most commonly known for starting about 150 years ago with the rise of physiology as a science. These companies torture these animals and even kill them with their products just so there is yet another brand of shampoo or another brand of makeup. Animals have chemicals rubbed in their fur, eyelids fused together, and are forced to starve inside of these facilities everyday. Animals can be ferocious and wild, but they can also be gentle and tame. Some are our pets, and some are powerful forces that are to be respected and admired. It is as easy to appreciate a loyal dog as it is to be in awe of a lion in its' natural habitat. But the truth that many people either don’t know or don’t appreciate is that animals are essential to human existence and have played a vital role in improving the quality of our lives. Today is the day I present to you, my fellow American citizens, the disturbance that has plagued my mind for decades now. For most of my lifetime, I have fought tirelessly to break the chains of slavery; the aim to equality and liberty for all was the only thing I hoped to achieve. Now a free man, I am suddenly faced again with an issue that seems to replicate the exact rendition of my past: animal testing. Before even making a decision, one should put long great thought into the question: Does animal testing truly provide the full benefits told to us, the public? As a true warrior (Analogy) who has combated the atrocities of slave life, I am quick to say that even considering the idea justifiable is going against one’s morals. I completely disagree with the fact that it (exists) benefits us in any way and am especially furious that we are progressively rewinding back to where we first started. My philosophy is that “we have to do with the past only as we can make it useful to the present and the future.” (Douglass) Overall, I stand with the idea that animal testing is an unnecessary procedure that in all provides more cruelty in this hate-filled world.

Animal testing is a cheap way for companies to test products without harming humans. It may seem all fine and dandy, but many defenseless animals are dying for our selfish purposes. Many beloved companies hide the fact that they harm these innocent animals. A few of those companies are Avon, Bobbi Brown, Covergirl, Estée Lauder, L’Oréal, M.A.C. Cosmetics and Pantene. At first sight many may think “ a few animal lives are ok to spare”, but when they see how many mainstream colossal companies are practicing these methods, they will see just how many animals are impacted by these terrible ways.

Millions of animals are being unneedlessly tested on for cosmetics, even though there are plenty of alternatives available and most of the results are unreliable or not applicable to humans. Although the fight against animal testing has made huge progress recently, America has yet to stop this cruel practice and chooses to torture animals while other countries are making a stop to the testing (“Animal Testing 101”).

Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
