The world is full of people using everyday products made from plastics or styrofoam, from simple things like cups, forks and spoons to expensive electronics such as printers, phones, and TV’s. “About 300 million tons of plastic is produced globally each year”(Raising Awareness of Plastic Waste) and “more than 14 million tonnes of polystyrene(styrofoam) are produced every year around the world”(Now and forever: The Styrofoam dilemma). With these high amounts being produced each year it is easy to see why our oceans are now filled with these materials which end up damaging our earths ecosystem, marine life, and wild life. Out of the 300 million tons of plastic produced “only about 10 percent of that is recycled”(Raising Awareness of Plastic Waste) and out of the 14 million tons of styrofoam produced only “56 million pounds of styrofoam are recycled”(EPS (Styrofoam) Facts, Figures and Statistics) This means that the majority of plastics and styrofoam end up in landfills or our oceans changing our world for the worst one non-recycled item at a time. After reviewing two different Ted Talks, one about recycling plastic by Mike Biddle and one about recycling styrofoam by Ashton Cofer it has become more apparent to me that recycling plastics is extremely important and Mike Biddle has the solution. What is Ted Talks? Ted Talks is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED was established in 1984 as a conference
Attention Getter- So I'm sure everyone has been in the situation where they were invited to go eat and ordered to much and decided they would take it to go but then the next day realized that the food wasn't as appetizing since now its soggy which left them with no other choice than throwing it away. Well it seems as if only the United States does this since it was stated by Rubbish Please that Americans are only 5% of the world population but produce 30% of the waste globally.
Imagine you wake up in 20 years and all you see out your window is trash lining the streets and roads. This is what is going to happen if we don’t start recycling now. If we all start recycling now we will have beautiful streets and roads not full of trash. I picked this topic because it is a worldwide problem and I think this topic can be solved. I was very curious about this topic and I wanted to know more about recycling. These are some driving questions I had at the beginning of this project. Why don’t a lot of people recycle? What is the most recycled item? Where is recycling a very big problem in the world? How can more people be involved with recycling? How many people and animals get affected by recycling every year? My driving question was how can we as people create a better recycling society.
Have you ever thought about what your community would look like without litter? If so, it may take a while to find out. One person throwing something on the ground may not think much of it, however, when that trash finds other trash, they begin to build up and make big piles of junk. For example, I am sure people never thought that if they littered, their trash would end up in the pacific garbage patch. Believe it or not, no one thinks that until you look at the pacific garbage patch and see how disgusting it looks just because people were to lazy to throw their trash away. To make matters worse, littering has become very common, which should be stopped because in most cases, trash is not disposed of properly,
Also according to Now and Forever The Styrofoam Dilemma, “three million tons of polystyrene that are produced in the U.S.of 2.3 million tons end up in landfills, with much of the remainder finding its way into waterways and styrofoam cups get thrown away by americans an estimated about 25 billion every year, or about 82 cups per person”(Catherine Solyom, 2015). In the article “Why Ban Styrofoam?” it says that “Styrofoam should not be out in the environment because the cups that get tossed into the trash today will still be in a landfill hundreds of years from now taking up 500 years to break down and that styrofoam products pose a risk to lakes, streams, and wildlife when waterways get blocked by the broken-down styrofoam and animals getting it mistaken for food and that also it’s a hazardous to our own health because when it gets heated it releases toxins”(Nicky LaMarco 2009). Lastly styrofoam affect our watershed by people who throwaway their styrofoam cups and it gets gathered into the landfills where it goes down into the waterways and blocks them. Overall this is why I chose this as a
Main Point 1: According to Richard Fuller, a system theorist, “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we've been ignorant of their value.”written on
We have all heard the saying reduce, reuse, and recycle from a very young age. But let’s face it, how many of us recycle? The world we live in is slowly filling up with the trash that we throw out every day. One day who knows, we might be living in our own trash and everywhere we look there will be trash. Is this a world where we all want to live in? If not, we need to take steps to prevent the buildup of trash in our landfills and even our oceans. Therefore, recycling needs to be encouraged because it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, prevents pollution, conserves natural resources, and creates jobs.
Plastic is in every part of modern day life. Today’s civilizations use it for everything from cleaning products to storage to safety equipment. Plastic has effectively become part of everyday life. It’s able to be used and discarded quickly, and often after it is tossed into the trash can it is forgotten. After it is thrown away, it may end up in one of two places, the local landfill or the oceans, where approximately fifteen to forty percent of plastics end up.
I am an international student from brazil. I have a background in food engineering and I am very interested in helping to reduce food waste because hunger is a problem that affects the world.
43% of the plastic is wasted on a global scale by being disposed of in landfills where all it does it
TED.com is a non-profit organization that hosts lectures from prominent figures throughout the world in an effort to spread ideas to engage critical thought and to change attitudes. TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) was a conference that began in 1984 that had widespread success and due to the proliferation, it expanded into becoming one of the most widely recognized informational communities on internet. TED is a non-profit that is owned by the Sapling Foundation, a non-profit itself that focuses on spreading ideas so that the audience can gain a greater understanding of what is going on in the world around them. TED is funded through conference fees, sponsorships, licensing fees, commercials, and donations. TED is a web based source
Global warming is caused by several things. One of these is the release of carbon dioxide into the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by using energy generated from burning fossil fuels.
According to the TED talk website, TED is “a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.” TED talks can be used for informative and educational purposes. Authors, educators, and other professionals are given the opportunity to present their projects to an audience of like-minded peers. The purpose of these talks is to help share ideas in communities around the world. TED states on their website, “We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world.” The “TED Talk” videos produced by the website provide a quick way to spread a message to potentially millions of viewers across the globe. In order to be successful, a speaker must
Look at the things around us—sunglasses, lunch boxes, ball-point pen, and many kinds of products we use every day; look at the garbage bags lie on the street, and the water bottle lies on the beach… many things around us are made of plastic. As a result, plastic is one of the most used materials in our daily lives. Admittedly plastic has some advantages; however, the disadvantages outweigh its advantages because of it is hard to decompose, wastes resources and contains toxic and harmful substances.
Where does all the plastic go. Every bit of plastic that has been created is still here. This is because plastic is one-hundred percent non-biodegradable! Even the most degraded plastic down to polymers cannot be digested by bacteria (Laist, 1997). If global issues like starvation and climate change are not enough to stress on, the weight of an issue literally churning in the Pacific Ocean is startling. For decades the majority of the world’s population has not been properly educated on the nature of plastic and the potential harm it can do to our environment and our physical health. Due to factors of man and the natural effects of nature, a major problem has developed that is now harming our food.
Plastic is one of the most important materials that are used today in our daily lives. Plastics have been in our lives for a long time. The first polymer plastic was first made in 1907 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland (Bellis, 2017,para.6). Plastics are used for food, transportation, packaging, bottles, containers, bags and much more. Around 300 million tons of plastic is created each year and less than 10 percent of that is recycled (Wassener, 2011,para.13). It exists everywhere and it’s a daily usage in our lives, thus, we can’t help but expose ourselves in the environment where plastics are around. The use of plastic has benefits but they also have some serious health and environmental impacts during manufacturing and disposing.
