What is marginalisation? (Slide 3)
To some it may just be a definable term like “it’s just pushing people to the margins”, but it is not as simple as that. It’s not just as simple as a definition; it is a way of life for so many people in our society. It is the oppression of a person based of where they were born, what religion they are, how much money they earn, if at all. It is a constant in so many people’s lives and it does not have to be. The numbers may surprise you. As you can see on the left the amount of time spent in detention camps in and around Australia has increased greatly in the past two years. The average stay is very high.
Number of People staying over two years (Slide 5)
Although the average stay has increased the actual number of people spending more than two years has declined since the middle of 2015. This is due to the fact that the refugee intake has decreased. This includes both the detention centres on Australia and other facilities owned by the Australia government.
Total people in detention centres (Slide 6)
As you can see on the graph to the left the total people in detention centres has decreased by a large amount since the middle/end of 2014. This was around the time when the government starting enforcing the “turn the boats back” policy, where boats that tried to enter Australia were sent straight back to their point of origin. This was attempt to try and stop the people smugglers from bring more illegal immigrants.
