Do children really know what it is like to write everything by hand? With all of the technological advancements today’s children are being forced to use iPads, computers, etc. to do school work instead of using a pencil and paper. This is causing poor handwriting in the younger generations. I know that my children’s handwriting is terrible because of this and they are always asking why they have to learn to write legibly because they can just use a tablet or computer to turn things in. Bic’s advertisement to “Fight For Your Write” effectively persuades parents today to purchase their products through ethos, logos, and pathos. When looking at this advertisement you see that it has a turquoise background that has sun, stars, and lightning bolts that are sketched in. There is a big whiteboard at the top that has the Bic logo and the slogan “Fight For Your Write” and it is wanting the audience to join their mission to save handwriting. On the board, it looks like it is written with their products. In the center, it has two children, one black boy with glasses and one white girl with red hair. The children are holding up pens and pencils with what looks like fake smiles on their faces. There is a white shadow surrounding the children that make it cartoon-like. At the bottom of the page, there is the yellow-mustard like the color from the Bic logo with the words “Better writers make better readers. The weather is perfect for racing: not too hot, not too humid, not too windy. I dash down the twisted trails in the woods, trying not to stumble on the gnarled roots protruding from the dirt. My spikes puncture the soft earth with every stride, and my legs repeatedly pound on the ground, soreness surging through them. As sweat trickles down my face and dirt smears across my aching calves, I ascend a steep hill, trying to bring forth the strength I have accumulated throughout endless hours of practice. Now that I am nearing the final two hundred meters, I must force my body to begin sprinting. Breathing heavily, I dart for the imminent finish line, trying to beat the uninterrupted tick of the timer. Even though the crowd surrounds all around me, I can barely hear their animated cheers, because all I can focus on is crossing the line before the girl next to me. I can feel adrenaline surging through my body, and I widen my stride to cap off the remaining distance. When I glance at my Garmin watch, a new personal best time flashes across the screen. The use of persuasive rhetoric writing can be helpful in the working world, especially when you need people to follow you. Using Ethos, is a way to approach your audience by establishing common ground, instead of coming off as authoritative. Even if someone doesn’t have the same views as you, if you acknowledge their values and beliefs, it’s easier to persuade them, because they see you do care about their opinion. As I move forward in any form of communication it is important to keep that in mind, and next year I’ll being using it a lot as president of CAC. Being the president of club means you have to communicate with your members, and the general public. CAC is involved in getting others to help, with the biggest event we hold, Relay for Life.
1. The last time I enjoyed writing something would have to be in the argument and arguing class I took. In that class we got to construct persuasive essays, which was interesting, but the real fun came when we were asked to pick apart other students essays. When tasked with this it becomes extremely fun as the source gathering for many students was either using selective information, or outright lies. Using that, you could essentially tear into anyone fragmenting their arguments and leaving you with a nice sense of satisfaction that I really only get when I prove my superiority over someone in a quasi-powertrip.
Michael Jordan once stated, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb over it, go through it, or walk around it.” This inspirational quote motivated many to overcome adversity when challenged by it. The texts, Speak by Laurie Anderson, “Third and Final Continent” by Lahiri Lahiri, and “The Art of Resilience” by Hara Marano, all have themes similar to Jordan’s quotation. All three articles support this through symbolism, foreshadowing, and character interactions. A common theme that one must stay resilient in order to overcome challenges while also staying level-headed during the positive and negatives is shown in Speak, “The Third and Final Continent,” and “The Art of Resilience.”
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of Donald Trump, has been under fire in the aftermath of possible collusion. Kushner has gone under investigation after emails were leaked of a Russian meeting and is being interviewed to get information. The dishonesty of Kushner, has shaken the trust within the government and the incriminating evidence keeps surfacing as the interviews conclude. The news focused on the four meetings that occurred during the 2016 presidential campaign, and the main people that were involved in the meeting.
Good question. I feel that persuasive writing does not put pressure on their reader but gives their reader another way of looking at a topic. My suggestion to you is to stick to the facts and back your statement with reliable research. Your reader will come to their own conclusion that is persuasive by you.
Purposeful. You will be writing to solve problems and convey information. You will have a definite purpose to fulfill in each message.
When you read an article, book or website the authors usually try to get a message out to the readers. The message could be to inform people on a certain situation, inspire someone to do something that is better for their life, or they can persuade individuals to impact society. To persuade an individual into something is to change their personal way of thinking, and it uses both to inform and inspire. To impact someone is to change something enough to have an effect, which can be positive or negative. Writers use language to persuade individuals to use their ideas and teachings in their own life.
Constant controversy, immaturity at its finest, an American flag, a little blue birdy logo, a verified checkmark, more than 44 million followers, little elementary school arguments with Kim-Jong-un; the list goes on. If you are still unaware of what I am referring to, it is the twitter account of the current President of the United States (POTUS), Donald J. Trump. This man is one of the largest and most active gatekeepers in the realm of social media. Generally, one would assume information posted in a tweet from the POTUS would undoubtedly be accurate. How could that ever not be a reputable source? Why even bother to do some of your own research? Unfortunately, this is not the reality we live in; not everything presented to us through news, government or media is true and thus, everything you hear today requires a conduction of your own research prior to accepting anything as true. To be completely honest, if you did not know I was referring to the POTUS, you are probably in a much better position than his 44 million followers, as you have successfully managed to avoid one of the many gatekeepers/media outlets whose employed methods entail the plaguing that come with the concept post-truth politics. Though, you must keep in mind that is just one of the many outlets, as this concept is currently taking place all over the world. You, along with the rest of the population are essentially forcibly subjected to fake news every single day of your waking life whether you choose to believe it or not. On September 10, 2016, The Economist published an article titled “The Post Truth World: Yes, I’d lie to you.” The article claims the reality of the current political world; a reality The Economist suggests the general population is ignorant of. The article is severely opinionated and due to the multitude of reasons provided in support of their argument, many of which substantiated with an abundance of factual evidence, the authors were very convincing in their contention that post-truth politics are to be with us for many years to come unless changes are made immediately.

“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm.
