People are not defined by their decisions and are the victims of outside forces because however a choice is handled, it has some sort of consequence. In the myth of Pandora, Pandora decides to open the jar of evil and let it out to the world. This hurt everyone in the world including her and Epimetheus because she made the choice to open the jar. In the story of Phaethon’s Ride, he makes the choice to get his father, Helios, to let him drive his chariot which hurts the inhabitants of earth and even leads to his own death. His choice to force his father and eventually fall to his death was his fault and he suffered from his choice. People can be hurt from choices of others or your own decisions. There is always some sort of force that causes …show more content…
The sun god had said no but his son made him swear on the River Styx so he eventually gave in and that eventually led to Phaethon’s fall. As Phaethon took to the sky in the chariot and he started to head towards the stars, he lost control of the horses. This started to boil the clouds and then he started burning everything on earth. He was burning everything and ruining the world so the gods had to end it. Zeus threw a thunderbolt and it hit the chariot and knocked Phaethon from it, sending him to his death, many miles down. His choice caused a lot of damage to the land, angered the gods, and led to the ending of his life. From this myth of Phaethon, I have learned that you shouldn’t listen to others if it going to hurt your feelings and do not try to be too persistent in knowing something because somebody does know more than you and they aren’t blind to the consequences like others …show more content…

The primary reason reason why Phaethon was led to his destruction is that he was a liar. When he lied, it told a lot about him. He specifically said “He taught me the reigns” and “how to make them go and how to stop”, showing that he is not honest about him driving the sun chariot. He even lied about meeting his father saying “Certainly, very often”. That piece of evidence indicates that he met his father which he has not done. Phaethon is digging a deeper hole for himself. If he told the truth he would not be in the position that he is in.
The character traits of Phaethon drive the story to its tragic conclusion. In the passage “Phaethon” it says, “‘I do, I do!’ cried Phaethon. ‘Stand away, sire! The dawn grows old and day must begin! Go, horses, go!’” This shows, that Phaethon is eager trying to drive the sun chariot so he does not listen to his father's instructions. In the passage “Phaethon” it says, “I must show him that it is I driving the chariot of the sun—I alone. Apollo said not to come too close to earth, but how will he know?” This explains, how Phaethon is selfish because he chooses glory over the lives of the innocent and he doesn't even get the glory. In the passage “Phaethon” it says, “‘I’ll go to the palace of the sun right now and hold my father to his promise.
First, in the story of Phaethon, Phaethon is characterized as a thoughtless and headstrong boy. These characteristics lead to catastrophic results, and help relate back to the main theme; A prideful disregard of the warnings from those who are older and wiser can quickly lead to disastrous consequences. For example, while driving the sun chariot and contemplating flying closer to Earth so everyone will see him, Phaethon exclaims, “Apollo said not to come too close to the Earth, but how will he know? And I won't stay long, just dip down towards the villages.” (53). This implies the Phaethon does not think about his actions, nor their consequences, and only does what benefits him and his reputation. Another adjective that could be used to describe Phaethon is stubborn, which is also demonstrated in this quote. It illustrates the idea that Phaethon was being overconfident and arrogant about
Everyone has to make choices in their life. Some are everyday choices, like what to eat or drink. Others are more critical, like choosing a job. Important decisions take time to comprehend. Going to college is important because it helps me find a job, it expands my knowledge, and it is a wonderful experience.

Personally, I have always been indecisive in all my decisions. Entering high school I had planned to take extracurricular classes pertaining to nursing. I was not exactly the most interested in that field of study, but I has been told that is the career I would make money in. The first day of high school I was not looking forward to entering the nursing class. I was sitting in my home room class waiting on my schedule anticipation rushing through my veins as I waited on my name to be called.
One day, Phaethon was drove to find his father by companions’ disbelief about the truth that Phaethon was the son of the god Helios who drove the chariot of the sun. His father very pleased about saw his son and promised to give him everything he wanted, while Phaethon required the chariot of the sun, which made Helios in a dilemma, because it’s extremely difficult and dangerous for Phaethon to drive it. It would bring a devastating disaster if he can’t balance the height between sky and earth. Finally, Helios let him drive it because he loves his son so much; Phaethon was too excited to listen to his father’s word and when he drove on the sky, terrible things happened.
Just because people are motivated by factors outside their control to do certain activates such as eating, watching a movie or going outside doesn’t take away from the fact that those people are still choosing to participate in that activity. While Oedipus was bound by prophecy, he still chooses to leave for Thebes even if he didn’t know that he was adopted by his foster parents, he still chooses to kill Laius even if it was in self defence and he still chooses to procreate and marry his mother even if he didn’t know her biological relationship with himself. This ideology that we are not entirely in control of our circumstances but our actions are decided by our own freewill is referred to as “soft determinism” and according to this ideology we are all held responsible for our actions if we have the potential to choose otherwise. In case of Oedipus he didn’t have a choice in killing his father and marrying his mother but he did have a choice in how those two events would playout therefore making him responsible for the majority of his actions in the
After doing that his father approves of his bravery and anounces that Phaethon is his sun because of his outstanding bravery in trying to drive the sun chariot. Phaethon tries his best to please his father and succeds. Phaethon’s desire to impress his father changes him by making him ignorant because of the skill it took to drive the sun chariot. The change of Phaethon’s kindness to complete ignorance changed him, becasue gaining Helios’s approval is what affected him into turning ignorant. “Phaethon took the reins and started at an easy pace.
Then phaethon says he wants to drive the gods chariot. Phaethon was first incontrol but then the horses took over and set the world on fire! Then Torment and Terror welcome death. Mother Earth cried out to the Sun Gods, and Zeus here's the cry and hurls a thunderbolt and shatters the chariot.
In “Oedipus,” Sophocles writes about a man who is hunted down by his cruel fate, and whose life is ruined in attempt to run away from it. The ancient Greek perspective reflects on the matter of the story and how the god’s highly influence the lives of humans. This viewpoint basically shows the unbounded power the Greek gods have; by being the gods of destiny, and leaving man at a helpless position. Fate plays a massive role in the lives of humans and as was believed by the ancient Greeks, their lives were simply directed by a decision of gods and goddesses. Oedipus knew his fate set by a curse cast on him; however, even when being aware it is impossible to escape fate, he still attempted to run away from it. As the play progresses Oedipus begins to understand the unbearable truth as he states “I’ve called down a dreadful curse upon myself,” followed by a response “I simply didn’t know!” (1103). It is the will of the man to realize what is inevitable and what choice is. In the Ancient Greece, Gods were praised and worshiped and any command stated by them is the undecided future. Oedipus acting as a blinded man who did not know of such fact led him to his fate and ironically is what later led him to blind himself (Gould). When Oedipus stabs his eyes out with the
This rage also leads to the destruction of the relationships of Agamemnon and Achilles, as well as strife between the Gods Zeus and Hera. In Phaethon, Phaethon is angry at his peers for not believing that he is the son of the son god, Phoebus. This anger
In The Iliad by Homer, gods often choose to influence how a mortal reacts or feels in many situations. Many mortals are chosen simply by birth, if their parents were gods, or for their destiny and therefore have no choice as to if they are chosen to be divinely influenced. As a result, mortals cannot be held responsible for their actions, be them good or bad under the influence of a god.
when phaethon found apollo they start to connect. They stared to connect when Phaethon wanted proof that Apollo was his father but only with his wish of falling the charity, but his brought Apollo and Phaethon into an agreement with each other about the wish, because apollo didn't want to grant phaethon's wish because he knew phaethon was not ready. But with apollo wanting his son to believe he didn't take the right path and tell his son yes and this wish phaethon want killed him because he was not ready like his father said. This father and son connection was huge because apollo garnet the wrong wish just to keep his son but instead it killed his son. The lesson thought here is to never fly too high and someone that is wiser than you up on their advice and if not you may come crashing down and have a hard time getting back up. The natural phenomena are Apollo controls the dawn, the
One of the trade-offs that I faced before in my life is when I had to make a decision about what I want to do after high school. If I chose to further my studies, that means I would have to give up the chance to earn money and gain working experiences. When I made up my mind to continue studying, I hesitated about which university to choose because there are too many choices. For example, if I had chosen to study at local university, I would have lost the opportunity to experience the university life in foreign country. Contrarily, if I had chosen to study abroad, there would have been a bigger financial burden for my family. I had to make the wisest decision as it affects my future.
