Many people felt that imperialism is beneficial for our country. However, our country was not built to become a nation that’s main way of advancement is through imperialism. The United States is built upon liberty and democracy and we should hold firm to our beliefs and morals. Our country, with its many advancements, does not need to use imperialism to try and achieve further success. The benefits of imperialism do not outweigh the negatives when it comes to the building of a better nation.
Our country is built upon our constitution and the constitution does not support imperialism because imperialism breaks our core values. As a country, we say we value liberty and democracy. However, this can not be true. Believing in liberty would mean

Countries such as the Philippines have dealt with this first hand. The United States government felt that the Philippine nation was an uncivilized and therefore not able to govern themselves. Our government also felt that their religion was not right. These things fall under the motives of imperialism for religion and ideological purposes. We had this view of “The White Man’s Burden”. Because of this mentality, we suppressed the Philippines when we forced our religion onto them. The United States felt that Christianity was a superior religion and that all should have our religion. So we not only forced our religion but also our way of life on them. The Philippine nation, like others, did not have the forces needed to stand up against the United States and were forced to be under our rule. Democracy is also something we claim to believe in. The United States felt that our way of government surpassed all other …show more content…
One of the main factors of imperialism is economics. The goal is to be able to trade with other countries and to find new markets. However, there are already global trade policies put in place. When president Theodore Roosevelt was in office, he gained the rights to the Panama Canal. This vastly improved our military and trade capabilities. Our navy was also one of the largest in the world. Roosevelt had built up the navy and sent it on a trip around the world known as “The Great White Fleet”. This trip helped us gain worldwide power and domestic support. The United States was very successful and imperialism tactics were not needed. Not only was imperialism a waste of time, but it was used for commercial gains. The main goal of many government officials was to maximize profit. With imperialism, they were able to do this. However, this was not needed because the United States was drawing in money not only from within our country but also from foreign countries as well. Imperialism was used for self-profit and wasted our countries time. This is because instead of spending time improving our country, the government spent time trying to make themselves
Everyone might have different opinion on rather imperialism is good for America or not but here are the reasons why it is good. Imperialism would be a great thing for America because imperialism has a lot of benefits and opportunities for a better lifestyle, because the expanding of nations can grow meaning more markets and businesses are being created that equals more money! Imperialism allows bigger countries to help smaller countries become successful. The ability to solve problems in counties near your own is great for making allies. A great example of trying to make allies is ideological imperialism which is a country’s ideas or views shared to other countries. Mainly to build each other up and exchange goods or raw materials. Imperialism can have economic forms which is the expansion of forms or acquire raw materials. The expanding of land and resources increases and the economic and political views are advanced. Transportation would be faster and easier due to the Panama Canal and we can get raw materials and the goods needed for our country. The Panama Canal is probably one of the greatest contrustion ever built, it has improved the United States for the better. New lands can be discovered and be turned into a great state like Hawaii and Alaska for example. A lot of people thought Alaska was just a cold and frozen place to be, but William Seward's bought it for 7.2 million dollars and now it’s a 49th state in America. Imperialism can improve your daily life as
Essentially, the US wanted to get more land so it would in the long run give them more power and money. We needed these policies to make us successful and the result is that we did become more expanded; we got more money, and more power due to these two previous things. I feel Imperialism was a success for the US for the reasons I just stated and feel it was an intelligent decision and action for our country. Even now, we are still somewhat Imperialistic considering we’ve spread our culture all over the world and help the poor. The only disadvantage is that now we pay too much attention to
According to the content section of this chapter Imperialism, means, “the subjugation, domination, and exploitation of almost the entire globe to the economic and political needs of one region (Europe), a development unprecedented in human history." To a neutral viewer this may appear like a beneficial idea. During the 1800s and early 1900s, Imperialism was seen as a benefit to some and others did not see it as this. Many European nations such as Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, as well as some other nations were gaining land. Many people had opposing views regarding imperialism. Those who were in favor of imperialism often argued that it was beneficial based on nationalism, economic gains, the fervor missions of the Christians,
American Imperialism has been a part of United States history ever since the American Revolution. Imperialism is the practice by which large, powerful nations seek to expand and maintain control or influence on a weaker nation. Throughout the years, America has had a tendency to take over other people's land. America had its first taste of Imperialistic nature back when Columbus came to America almost five hundred years ago. He fought the inhabitants with no respect for their former way of life, took their land, and proceeded to enslave many of these Native Americans. The impact of the 1820's and 1830's on American Imperialism is undeniable. Although the military power was not fully there during this time period, their ideals and foreign
Imperialism had benefited the country by increasing businesses competition, increasing immigration, and increasing technology advancements and production. Many of the positives of Imperialism had a connection with Social Darwinism in which the benefits from Imperialism would help support the upper class, from which supporting the upper class helps bring the whole economy upperward; and as America believed in Imperialistic Views, they were advancing at an astonishing rate and became much more powerful compared to other countries, which showed there was no reason to continue using imperialistic methods as they were already number one, yet if they discontinued in such policy, they wouldn't be advancing at such a rate and would slow down the whole country. As with America following the policy, it made America much more powerful in a way nobody
The concept of imperialism is one that has pervaded nearly every major society or empire throughout human history. It seems to be a natural consequence of societies growing in size, power, and knowledge. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries vast changes occurred in Western Europe (and soon spread elsewhere) that spurred a new round of imperialism the likes of which had not been seen before. The changes were the industrial revolution that was taking place. Countries were rapidly advancing to industrial societies producing much greater quantities of goods at much lower costs. The goods produced ranged everywhere from cotton textiles to military machinery, all of which would play important roles in rounds of imperialistic expansion that
Imperialism is defined as a policy of extending a country 's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Countries during the Industrial Revolution wanted to imperialize due to social, political, and economic reasons. As early as the mid 1800’s, the European countries craved the idea of power and conquering new lands in order to obtain resources/raw materials. They took over Africa, the Ottoman Empire, India, and Southeast Asia due to this as well as for their convenient location. They believed that the more land one owns, the stronger the country would be. Although some can argue the fact that imperialism had a detrimental effect because these countries lost their culture and independence, the end result of this was definitely more positive than negative both short term and long term. These countries would not be as thriving today if this had not happened. European Imperialism in parts of the Middle east, Africa, and Asia had more of a positive impact on the world due to education, modernization, healthcare/sanitation, and more trade/resources used.
Imperialism is when a larger, more powerful nation takes control of smaller, weaker nations. The American idea is for freedom. As a nation the United States promotes the freedom of itself and other countries. America once fought for the freedom from a larger, more powerful nation, so why would the government want to go back on what this country was started on, which was freedom.
The ideals of Imperialism within the United States caused many benefits to our economy and overall prosperity. The ideals of American imperialism came first from the idea of manifest destiny: coined by John O'Sullivan, manifest destiny was the idea that it was the Americans god given right to seize all lands in the American continent. From this fact alone it's very clear that Imperialism in the late 1800’s took many ideas from the concepts of manifest destiny. The general motives for imperialism were economic, military, political, and ideological in nature. These imperialistic ideals affected many nations and settlements like Guam, China, Japan, and Hawaii. The first conflicts of the Spanish American war began in the spanish owned territory of Cuba. Cuba was acquired by the Spanish in the mid 1600’s when spain was going through their own hyper imperialistic phase of taking many of the islands in the Caribbean and areas in the southwest. With this information it's relevant of the fact that imperialism causes conflicts, specifically with other nations. Spain's imperialistic nature drives them to protect themselves from the U.S. during the cuban uprisings. From this information we can conclude that the rebellions in Cuba were great inspirations to yellow journalistic writers which led to our involvement in their affairs with spain that all eventually led to and caused battles in the philippines and Cuba after the Spanish American War.
The exploits of imperialism is averse to our American values, including personal and collective rights. One of these values, which is freedom, is a core component in our country. It embraces the fundamental beliefs put forth by our Constitution. Based on treaties, pacts and alliances between our country and other nations, we are lured into conflicts that force upon the human rights of the populations of other
Imperialism is a policy that has positively impacted nations and their development for centuries. This was especially true during the late 1800s and early 1900s, when many European nations began to expand far beyond their borders. Imperialistic policies were not only good for the development of countries that were expanding, but in many cases, the countries that were being expanded into as well.
In “The Philippines Tangle,” America helped the Philippines when they did not need help and it may have backfired. Also, “To the Person Sitting in the Darkness” discussed wanting to stay out of the war with the Philippines, but there ended up being a war and many died, American and Filipino. It also says, the United States robbed them of their “land and liberty.” Not only did imperialism hurt other countries, the United States was also harmed. Empire building took a lot of time, effort, and money for the United States.
The United States experienced a period of growth and maturation during the twentieth century. Now, this is not to say that this was the only period of growth, but it was a significant time during which the United States began to establish its military force at an international level. By establishing itself during the twentieth century as one of the world’s largest superpowers, America grew to be respected by most of the world’s nations. America also grew to become much more active in foreign affairs, even in ones that had no relation to the nation. The United States began to look for chances to expand their country, as well as opportunities to benefit financially from these territories. Imperialism is the word that best describes the foreign

Imperialism began in the 1870s, European states established vast empires mainly in Africa, but also in Asia and the Middle East. Imperialism can be used as an act of expanding used as an act of developing a country’s empire through the use of force, colonization, or coercion. This method can be used to benefit one or both sides of the process. By means of benefiting one side would be considered as being a world bully because the nation is trying to expand or develop with the help of others without doing the other nation any good. As a result of advancing both nations can give a nation the name of a world leader with it helping both sides, everyone is developing in a way to help not just themselves, but others as well. America used imperialism for the good or bad as long as they got something out of it in some way. Many in the U.S. thought that country must be able to compete and saw the opportunity to take its own colonies before European countries got them all. Colonial powers often struggled with each other over the best potential features. These motives tend to believe its purpose is gaining additional wealth, power, and control. America used this approach as an intimidator to get economic growth, expand their political power, spread of the culture’s religion, and build military and naval bases.
