Speech is way of communicating to people it means speaking, verbal communication or to express thoughts, feelings and ideas. Children may learn through copying other children or adults which helps them to produce sounds which will then help to say words that other people can understand. In my setting I have non-verbal children so there speech is usually babbling or making a gesture through pointing.

Have you ever wondered how we speak? How about why our communication is considered a language and other animal’s communication is not considered language? A wide range of beliefs exist on what defines language. Thus, by exploring the definition of language and lexicon, evaluating language’s key features, the four levels of language structure and processing, and the role of language in Cognitive Psychology, an understanding of what language is becomes clear. Let us begin by defining language and a term named lexicon.

* Language- Is a way in which you communicate with words or set of symbols that can be spoken, written or signed.

A person communicate different variety of ways, both verbally and non-verbally. Primates and other animals have been communicating without the use of language since long before humans invented verbal communication. Some scientists believe that even today, most communication between humans is non-verbal. Both types of communication differ significantly between genders and across cultures.

Speech – The act of speaking, verbal communication. The act of expressing or describing thoughts, feelings or ideas by articulate sounds or words.

Humans and other primates both communicate using many different vocal sounds, though humans have broad and detailed languages. All primates are very vocal animals, though other forms of communication are often used. Humans have a complex language of hand signals (sign language) that is used. “What makes us human?”, is an unanswered question asked by many. Is it because of our ability to have empathy for others? Or is it because of our cognitive ability which allows us to look into the future? One of the main arguments made that separates humans from animals is our communication style; our language. Is language inherently unique to human? To answer such a question, we first operationally define language as; “a system of communication based upon words and the combination of words into sentences” (University of Oslo). The purpose of language is for us to be able to convey an infinite amount of ideas to one another. Sign language in general also falls under this definition as it has a complex system of rules and syntax that allow the signed figures to function as words. Animal communication on the other hand, is operationally defined as, “the transmission of a signal from one animal to another such that the sender benefits, on average, from the response of the recipient” (Pearce 1987). With this in mind, current research has shown that the answer is that language is inherently unique to humans.

In the book Philosophy The Basics by Nigel Warburton , Warburton brings up the topic utilitarianism. “Utilitarianism is based on the assumption that the ultimate aim of all human activity is (in some sense) happiness”(Warburton47). Then he goes on to explain what a utilitarian definition of happiness is , he states “good as whatever brings about the greatest total happiness”(so based on this people would probably question what is total happiness or true happiness , my opinion on true or total happiness is emotion and comfort people in our society lies about the word “happiness” quite a bit mostly a question that gets asked with people in relationships and the answer is mostly yes but are they really telling the truth. Human language is different from animal call systems in that it is symbolic, biocultural, complex, and unique. We have a language unlike any other species and it can be translated in many different ways. Human language can be spoken, written, morse code, body language, or American Sign Language, just to name a few. Human language allows us to understand someone else’s cultural experiences and communicate our own, in a flexible and creative way. Our language is more open that way as compared to other species. Compared to us, nonhuman species have closed call systems because animals can only produce calls in appropriate situations (danger, sexual interest, hunger, etc.). The claim, humans are the only animal that can acquire language has been the subject of much debate as scientists have investigated language use by non-human species. Although, there is no agreed definition of language among linguists, but we can say that language is the most sophisticated way of communication between any two human beings and far more complex than any other system of communication. The ability of acquiring and using languages is one of the properties that differs us as human beings from other species.

It is argued that the human species are a class of animal. However, the distinctive characteristic that makes us unique, which makes humans different from all other species, is our ability to use complex language. Language is thought of as multi-sensory, containing not only the verbal and writing, but also touch, smell, sound, and body elements. As humans are very social beings, people have the natural instinct to connect and communicate with others, to share our emotions and ideas, and as a result, learning a language becomes an instinct for each individual.
