Throughout the short story “The Worn Path” there are multiple symbolic terms. Phoenix Jackson an old negro women that ventures into a journey to obtain medicine for her grandson. This story has many symbolic points that expresses Phoenix's life. Her name represents a phoenix by her restoring life by going to the doctors to get her grandson medicine. The title is symbolic because she sacrifices herself for her explicit love for her Grandson. Also while on this journey she struggled with her eyesight and mistakened a scarecrow for a dancing ghost. A phoenix is a mythical bird that burns into ashes and then rises from its ashes showing rebirth and youth. In the title ‘worn path’ stands for all the obstacles and challenges she faces throughout this journey. She overcomes a lot of conflict while walking on the path. Since she is an older lady she finds some things to be hard like “...leveling her cane fiercely before her like a festival figure in some parade, she began to march across...I wasn't as old as I thought,”she said. The challenges she faces symbolize the problems she has encountered in her life. In some cases Phoenix does go down a path and makes her own path as “she passed through the old cotton and went into a field of dead corn.” The scarecrow that Phoenix spots The purpose of the scarecrow is to scare away black bird which symbolizes death and all of the slaves that were in her life. As she approaches the scarecrow she thinks it’s a black man dancing. Phoenix realizes it is a scarecrow and laughs about the mistake she ,made and starts to dance with the scarecrow. This represents her with slaves that have gone and slavery in general.
During “The Worn Path” there are many encounters of symbolism. These three symbolisms show problems in Phoenixes life that she has encountered but pulled through. She has obstacles that she has to go through to get to where she has to be. This story shows that there might be challenges in your life but you have to face
