Walking into the gym, for the first time I was aware of the informality of my workout clothes. I was assured that my attire was not an issue as I stood next to the most formally dressed person in the gym, a physical therapist that I would be shadowing. Usually when I came in I worked with a trainer, who saw me standing by the physical therapist and asked with concern if I was okay. While I waited for my mentor’s attention I assured him that I was uninjured. After being introduced, I stood off to the side watching as an elderly woman was being treated with a set of shoulder exercises. I backed myself against a row machine, whose space-wasting presence I was beginning to relate to. Perceiving my uneasiness the physical therapist, in his button-down blue shirt and tie, attempted to relax me. “I’m very laid back when it comes to shadowing,” …show more content…
The clients loved to watch and occasionally pet the smooth, neatly groomed fur as she roamed the gym. Some clients were even sorry that she would soon be leaving to continue her training. This value on comradery extended beyond the puppy. Listening to patients talk impressed upon me how many people desired someone to listen, even if, like me, that was almost all they did. A few even seemed disappointed that I was only there for the day. In contrast, my mentor’s outgoing personality allowed him to quickly establish relationships which would last through treatment. I was amazed as even new clients recognized him or told him that they had met him before. Sympathy for clients allowed me to relate to their frustration, as my own injuries once led me to be in their position. However, I also understood that sharing this would not improve their experience as the disappointments and problems of others can allow an individual to sink into their own. Unfortunately, I still stood
Ever since I was a kid, it has been my life goal to help as many people I can. I have moved around in many different areas of the medical field, but no career had caught my eye as much as physical therapy. As an athlete, I have been in and out of the physical therapist’s office for a majority of my life. Each time I have went I could not help but be beyond grateful for what these people have done for me; they have given me the ability to play the sport I love despite all the hiccups. Physical therapy is a dynamic field within the field of medicine because as a physical therapist one can make a difference in the lives of his or her patients, enjoy job security, and enjoy a rewarding and personally satisfying career.
One of my main goals for this practicum is to learn more about occupational and physical therapy. To get a better understanding between the two and what their fields entail. The reason this is my main goal is because I am on the fence with which field I am wanting to go on to grad school for. I am leaning towards occupational therapy, but I am still curious about physical therapy. This is why I am choosing to observe both occupational and physical therapists during my practicum. I am planning on shadowing at two facilities. Another goal I am wanting to fulfill is getting a broad spectrum of age groups. What I mean by this is I would like to observe both young and old patients. I would like to compare the work a younger adult does towards the
My first experience observing a physical therapist, commenced in the summer of 2014. At the time, I was given the opportunity to observe a physical therapist named Jennifer Moreland. Throughout my time observing her, I began to recognize she was not just a physical therapist with her patients. Many times, she took on the role of a consoler, cheerleader, friend and supporter for her patients. Reflecting back on this, I am able to see that the primary reason she has succeeded as a physical therapist; is due to her amiable, encouraging and empathetic nature. These character traits have allowed her to do more than heal patients' musculoskeletal problems. She has also been able to heal hearts, souls and minds by cheering, supporting, listening
There are 12000 careers in the world that people have the choice to pick between. The career that was chosen to be spoken about was Physical Therapy. A Physical Therapist Plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitation programs to improve or correct disabled people from getting disease or injury.
While I shadowed Janet, I noticed that there was a multitude of tedious documentation that she was required to record. She explained that she spends numerous hours outside of work completing this documentation. Aside from the overwhelming amount of documentation, I felt that I could potentially enjoy working in the field of physical therapy. Janet is able to truly work with patients one-on-one and it was heartwarming to see the excitement that Janet expressed when her patients showed progress. As the year progresses, I plan to look into the steps required to become a physical
I shadowed Matt Woodruff, who is a certified hand therapist and a occupational therapy at St. Luke’s. I had the opportunity to see the determination, character, and patience that it takes to be an occupational therapist. I arrived 15 minutes early, so I decided to take a seat and wait for Mr. Woodruff. As I waited, I turned to the sound of elevator doors opening, and saw a paraplegic woman step out. I recognized her at my OT that I had when I had a burn incident at the age of 2. Immediately I burst into tears and took a knee next to her and said “Do you remember me?” As I explained more about myself and what happen when I was a child, she pulled out her phone and showed me a picture of 2 year old me on her lap. As I clean myself up she showed
On 9/28/17 I spoke with C. Weaver physical therapy. The physical therapist advised that they do not offer occupational therapy just physical therapy. They also are not equipped to do more than one body part at a time. In reviewing the records and the FCE I had supplied them they determined she is not in the best location. They recommend Hope Network. I have contacted Hope Network and confirmed that this would be a more appropriate location for the 5 days a week therapy she needs and what the FCE had suggested. I have contacted Dr. VanderJagt’s office and requested an order for the therapy.
As my high school career comes to an end, I am about to take the first step into the next stage of my life. My fellow classmates and I have been asked for many years, "What do you want to study in college?" and "What career would you like to pursue?" Also for many years, we have been asking some equally as difficult questions: "Why are we learning this?" or "When are we ever going to use this in the real world?" After a lot of consideration, I have decided to study to become a physical therapist (PT), and I have realized the importance of the seemingly "useless" information that I have learned during my time at EHS.
The career I choose is physical therapy. Physical therapists develop plans for the patient to follow and recover. They use exercises and stretching techniques to treat and prevent further injury of the patient ( “Summary”). I choose this career because I enjoy helping people get better. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties, for a particular career when making this decision.
Why do you want to attend a summer program at Wake Forest University? How will this experience help you prepare for your college career and beyond?
There was a young girl that played volleyball, she was a very outstanding girl she was known for being the nice girl in school and very smart. One night they had a volleyball game at her school everything was going fine during the game until… she jumped up to hit and once she came back down she landed wrong and twisted her ankle. How fortunate that there was a physical therapist at the game she ran to the young girl too check her out. Knowing how much this women knows about the human body and using her knowledge is so awesome. Physical Therapist have a lot of travel opportunities and job responsibilities this is an industry of hard work and dedication.
I want to help others, in any way I can. My ticket would take me to a physical therapist degree. I gained an interest in becoming a physical therapist when I started to care more about my physical fitness, and wonder all about muscles and the human bodies full potential. I know I would make an excellent physical therapist. My interest in the human body makes it very easy to learn and drives me to learn as much as I possibly can. When it comes to the human body and learning about how different activates and diets affect it, I can never learn enough. I want to be a physical therapist so I can help others feel healthy.
Introduction The roles of health care professionals are much broader than we think. Caring for patients is not an easy task. There are multiple health care professionals involved with just one patient receiving care, whether a Chaplain, Pharmacist, Administrator, Therapist, Nurse, Doctor, and other health care professionals. They all have one purpose, which is to provide the best quality of care to patients with compassion and respect.
Sitting in the physical therapy room surrounded by white walls, machines, and the dull, humming noise from the iridescent lights was nothing like the green grass I sprinted across or the roar of the crowd during a home game. My energy evaporated. I became reserved. My body was no longer lean and powerful; it was pudgy, loose, and swollen from the therapy. I remember looking in the mirror at the physical therapist’s office thinking, “This is not me.” But in an unforgiving high school environment, it was easy to sit on the sidelines and watch the game from afar, resting on past laurels and actions.
When I was 15 years old, my grandmother had a stroke that affected her physical functions. I attended most of her rehabilitation sessions, and I was fascinated with her satisfaction about regaining her independence. From that time, I knew that I want to be a physical therapist. Helping patients and making them independent as possible was extremely important to me. For that, when I graduated from high school, I took my passion to reality and I applied to physical therapy school at King Saud University, Riyadh – Saudi Arabia.
