1. I define plagiarism as a form of theft. Passing one person's written thoughts and ideas as your own is a wrongful act that I believe should be punished. Having had experience with plagiarism, I know what the consequences are and why it is so important to avoid it.
2. In my junior year of high school, I had to write an essay about the works of Edgar Allen Poe. This essay was the thing standing between me and Christmas break, so, I wanted to rush through the essay as quickly as possible. Searching on google led me to one website that contained information that I could use. The only problem was that I only used this one website. I basically copied the material and changed a few words for my entire essay. I did cite the source, but I had used so much of this website's material that I was just passing its author's work off as my own. The consequences for plagiarizing were a failed grade on the essay, and I had to speak with a counselor about plagiarizing. This experience taught me why writing assignments should not be rushed and that I should always make sure to not copy any author's material without giving full credit.

I am completely sure that I have plagiarized unknowingly in the past. Ever since I plagiarized in high school, I have been careful about giving full credit to sources. However, before that it is very likely that I had a writing assignment where I didn't give credit to an author without knowing it. I remember never using in-text citations because I never understood them completely. Without properly acknowledging that ideas were not my own in the body of my assignments, I was plagiarizing while thinking I was doing nothing wrong. I even had assignments sent back because they did not have any in-text citations. Now that I understand their importance, I use them whenever they are
Plagiarism is not just limited to taking information from resources without citations. According to Theresa Ireton, an assistant professor of writing in Centralia College, Washington, there are also subcategories of plagiarism in writing, such as plagiarism of structure, authorship, and plagiarism of self [4]. It is considered a plagiarism of structure when an imitator is paraphrasing by having different word choices than the original content. Plagiarism of authorship constitutes buying and turning in duplicate copy of another person’s work without any modifications whatsoever. Plagiarism of self is when an individual tries to utilize previously completed work as a resubmission for a different assignment. Even though the previous assignment is fully original content from an individual, it still constitutes as cheating due to an unfair advantage.
Now some would argue that in order to truly plagiarize someone else’s work they have to be a copy written author. This how ever is not true from an academic point of view. Plagiarism covers so much more, i.e.; using unauthorized notes during a test, copying answers from another student during a test, downloading information such as text, computer code, artwork, or graphics from the internet and presenting it as you’re work without acknowledgment, copying from others during a work group and even
Not making a good use of the internet and deciding to plagiarize can result in a failing grade. Students have been cheating all the way from High School without getting caught, and consequently they haven’t been lectured on plagiarism. Usually, teachers do not take the time to talk to their students about plagiarism. “many students claim not to have been confronted with the issue by parents or previous teachers except when personally caught plagiarizing” ( Petress). This lack of knowledge about plagiarism incites students to keep cheating. The only difference is that in college teachers have more advanced ways to grade papers. Technology has advanced. “...the same technology that makes it so easy for students to cheat is now aiding teachers in catching them” ( Hastings). College teachers are more strict regarding plagiarism than high school teachers; they can turn a plagiarized work into a zero. Students need to understand how useless it is to cheat. Everything is better than a zero, so students will get more benefit if they turn in a paper that
1. Plagiarism is a dishonest, unprofessional and mindless act of fraud. Essentially, when an individual plagiarizes he/she is stealing another’s ideas, thoughts or work and presenting them as his/her own rather than giving credit where credit is due. To avoid such an offense, one can simply cite the sources of his/her work, use quotations marks for direct quotes and give credit to the individual who spoke the words or wrote them, as well as summarize knowledge gained in one’s own words.
Plagiarism is the act of copying someone else's work and putting it as one's work . Plagiarism goes beyond just copying out the idea and work, it is also discredits the work done by another person that has previously worked on the idea as it presents the idea as original.
Being a student and getting in trouble for plagiarism is serious business which can make you fail an assignment, fail a course or even prevent you from graduating. Plagiarism is serious and not worth it. The best thing a person can do is to make sure whatever it is you are writing, ensure it is your own thoughts and ideas. It is ok to research information and cite it but bottom line; it has to be your own. Not all online sources we find on the internet are correct; we have to be careful with those sources as well. I can also make sure that if I do use some words or information from someone else, I identify where or who I got that information from. I would make sure that whatever I am writing is unique and personal. If my words and thoughts
Plagiarism is a very common mistake many writers can make without even realizing it. As a college student my academic integrity is very important to me. A person’s academic integrity is the hard work and honesty that represents someone. Plagiarism is something that I believe that can be intentional or unintentional based on the circumstances for the writer. As a beginning writer I remember not feeling comfortable citing sources because I didn’t believe I was doing it correctly. Or perhaps the idea when I was researching for a topic I was putting writing in my own words, but somehow I could’ve made another author’s words similar to my own without thinking about it. Plagiarism in most cases is intentional. My definition is the act of stealing
Plagiarism is using someone else’s work, words, production, researches and ideas without the approval or the acknowledgment of the writer or producer, and claiming the credit for himself. Many reasons and factors are attributed for the use of plagiarism and could be cultural, historical, linguistic, environmental and educational background. Plagiarism is a form of an academic dishonesty, academic misconduct, and a digital cheating. It is declared to be an unacceptable legal act and institutional regulations. And universities, schools, and instructors do not only need to decrease plagiarism, but they must also affect positively on students writings, increase the understanding of how to use digital technology to facilitate their academic writing.
Plagiarism is a very important topic that needs to be addressed with students at all phases of their academic progression. Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty. It involves taking information from a source and using it as your own (Bethel, 2015). Plagiarizing can be a very easy thing to do if you do not pay attention, but it can also be easily avoided. The most important thing to do is make sure that you are citing your sources and citing them properly (Bethel, 2015). I think that for me, this is the hardest thing to avoid. I am always afraid that I will cite sources improperly and be charged with plagiarism. I have been afraid of plagiarism ever since I wrote my first essay in high school. One great way to avoid improperly citing is to get your information from the Bethel University library (Bethel, 2014). If you get your information from there, you can click on the yellow piece of paper on the right of
Plagiarism according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary means to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own; to use (another's production) without crediting the source; to commit literary theft; or to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
Plagiarism is an act of copying someone else's ideas, conversation and representing as your own work and show that you have written the work you are presenting. Also, when people plagiarism they are stealing and doing fraud with other people work and show the person they are presenting that they have work really hard. These days its very easy for people to plagiarize and do fraud with other people's' work, it's all because of the internet access we have. Also, with internet access people can fine anything they wants to write about on different website. When we copy anything from internet, it's necessary for us to give credit to the person.
Plagiarism is the act of using someone else’s words or ideas as your own. Without giving the proper acknowledgement to the people who own the intellectual property one can see themselves facing major repercussions. The plagiarizing a student
3. The hardest type of plagiarism for me is APA citation. I have a habit of re-wording the information I study or find without citing who said what. I fail to give credit where it is due. Sometimes I will remember to put the author's name , and forget the year it was published. On several occasions I have paraphrased other writings in which more than one author was responsible for the writing, in which I only recognized one author without recognizing the other. After going through the lesson about plagiarism, I plan to re-check my work to ensure i am not plagiarizing. I will cite all sources to ensure no one is left out as well
Plagiarism, what is it and how to avoid it has been a major question on every students’ mind. Sure it is easy just to copy and paste and take all the credit for the work that another individual put in, but is it worth it? According to WPA, Writing Program Administrators, the definition of plagiarism as states, “plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common-knowledge) material without acknowledging its source.” Plagiarism has always concerned teachers and administrators, who want students’ work to repre¬sent their own efforts and to reflect the outcomes of their learning. However, with the advent of the Internet and easy access to almost limitless written material on
The ORI defines plagiarism as theft of one’s work at any stage of your work where credit is not given and allowing the reader to believe that it is only your work. These works can range from ideas and unique methods like grant papers, to copying words straight from a text. (Handa, 2008).
