Plagiarism is when a person tries to pass of another’s words as their own. Plagiarism can occur whether it is intentional or unintentional. One such instance is forgetting to give credit by forgetting an in-text citation or not putting quotation marks around words taken directly from the text (Janechek). According to Purdue Owl, plagiarism includes “buying, stealing, or borrowing a paper; hiring someone to write your paper for you; and copying large sections of text” (“Welcome to the Purdue OWL”).

A persons’ idea and research containing all their hard work ought always to be credited. Stating the authors name, publisher, year and city of publishing will help keep a paper safe from plagiarism. Writing a paper can be difficult without researching from other resources. So making sure to properly cite a paper is important. Plagiarism or copyright infringement can ruin a paper. Even if the paper has been summarized to the highest expectation without citing or even proper citing can lead to expulsion or costing him or her highly of their grade. Plagiarism can be prevented by understanding the meaning, citing resources properly, and being aware of the penalties behind plagiarism.

To plagiarize is to use the work of another and represent it as your own work. The overall concept is simple. Do not copy the work of another and use it as your own. It is commonly understood, although not always adhered to, that a student should not have another write their paper nor should they purchase a pre-written paper and turn it in with their name on it. Many students can lack an understanding of the more subtle aspects of plagiarism though. A common misconception is using the work of another and simply rephrasing it or using quotes around the portion of the work of another but not citing that source. In these cases, a student might not realize that they may be plagiarizing another author.

Throughout our school careers we will encounter times when teachers and professors will require us to submit written assignments. Within these assignments one of the main areas of concerns while the instructor is reviewing the final report is plagiarism. In regards to plagiarism there are six topics that I would like to cover on the topic. What is plagiarism? Why do students plagiarize? What is the difference between intentional and unintentional plagiarism? What is the importance of citing? What is citing, direct quoting, and paraphrasing? What is common knowledge? By understanding these areas in the context of plagiarism we as students can ensure that we will not be guilty of cheating on an assignment by using words and Ideas

Taking someone’s words and using them without a proper citation is a problem. Without being taught the correct way, this problem is not going to correct itself and will continue to become a bigger problem. There are major consequences for plagiarising, but these can be avoided with a simple citation. Tying together the definition of plagiarism, reasons for using documentation, and an explanation of MLA 8 and APA citations will all be brought together. Learning what kind of citation, and what needs a citation is a very important concept in becoming a successful writer. Citing a source correctly will save you time and problems.
