Police officers are faced each day with a variety of situation in which they must deal; therefore we should ask ourselves the following questions: Should police officers enforce the law equally in all situations? In what situations should police officers be allowed to not enforce the law? What types of situations would they be required to fully enforce the law? Why does police discretion exist? What are its strengths and weaknesses? And what is the relationship between police discretion and police ethics?

In dealing largely with disorderly elements of the society, some people working in law enforcement may gradually develop an attitude or sense of authority over society, particularly under traditional reaction-based policing models; in some cases the police believe that they are above the law. In other cases, police corruption and misconduct may be explained by individuals and individual faults- behavioral, psychological, background factors, and so on.

The reason some officers have resisted implementing problem-solving strategies is because problem solving has a dual focus. According to the course text, the first focus, is that it requires incidents to be linked to problems. The second focus, is time devoted to “preventive” patrol is required to be spent proactively, which determines problems in the community and their causes (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2014). Although problem-solving is ideal, unfortunately officers cannot ignore specific incidents. For example, when call come in, officer respond as quickly as possible. In addition, even if officers respond to incidents, seek symptoms of problem, or both, the public can help or hinder their efforts (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2014).

This essay discusses the effects of the police organizational culture on a Police officer’s ability to make independent decisions.

On 02/27/2017, I, Dillon Dickerson, badge #155, was working as a Patrol Officer for the Wichita State University Police Department (WSU PD), in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas. At approximately 2300 hours during our shift briefing second shift advised we may have to do some follow up to a case they had earlier in the shift. Officer Ben Gabel #152 was the one who took the case. Officer Gabel advised there was a Battery case which happened earlier in the day. This case involved two students. Officer Gabel said there may be a male student by the name of Mekeal Simmons making contact with WSU PD. Officer Gable stated the female half of the Battery (Jessica Johnson) would be leaving campus around 0130 hours to return to Texas. Officer Gabel advised he told the female half to call WSU PD and we would come out there to make sure she was safe while she packed up her items. Officer Gable also said he was in contact with Chief Sara Morris #113 and she was aware of the case. Officer Gable said if we do have contact with the male to get a statement from him and to contact the Captains or Chief.

When it comes to evaluating a police departments new formed program in-house counseling services for police officers, which is intended to reduce stress among police officers, several factors must come into place. In making this evaluation, we must first put officers into groups by age, time served on the force, and areas which officers are patrolling. In any police force, psychological evaluations should be given on a monthly basic to head the problem before it gets out of control. Because police officers have so many negative views throughout society, it can put extra stress on any individual. Out of 100 police officers, they would be split in 2 groups of 50. Policing and the way they operate are truly similar as if they are hand in hand with one another. In order for operations to run smoothly and the department to be functioning as one there has to be proper training and care from the supervisors, administrators and from everyone who works together to understand that they’re a team. Everyone in the police department has to work together instead of against one another just to make sure everyone is doing their jobs by the books with no room for errors.

The third solution is increasing the scope of common-unity oversight programs. Considering the important role that police officers have in the community, the people should be involved in the decision-making processes that they undertake. By partnering with the local common-unities, police officers will receive better treatment from local common-unities, resulting in the use of less force while they are undertaking their roles. Additionally, civilian review boards should be developed to allow common-unities and law enforcement officers to work together, enhancing transparency in law enforcement activities.

Law enforcement officials are trusted with a great deal of responsibility and discretion in order for them to effectively complete their daily duties.
