While hiding at the church, johhny suprises ponyboy and dally that he wants to go back to their town and turn himself in to the police. Dally, who is very supriesed about his descion, tells johnny absolutly not because he does not want to see pony harden as a person in prison like he himself did. However, johnny inists this is what he has to do and the boys decide to leave. When the trio were leaving they saw that the church was on fire. Darry said to leave the church but ponyboy and johnny rush to help. They here that their are kids stuck in the burning building and they rush to get inside and help. In contrast to the removed Johnny shown early on, after the realization that he endangered several children, he boldly rushed to assist. After killing Bob in self-defense, Johnny bolts with Ponyboy to an abandoned church in the countryside. However, after presumably dropping a lighted cigarette, the church ignites in a blaze of fumes. Realizing there are children in the flaming church, Johnny and Ponyboy dart to aid. During the calamity, Ponyboy realizes that, “Johnny had been right behind me all the way” as he slips through a broken window and into the fiery church and notes that, “Johnny wasn’t behaving at all like his old self...That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes” (92).
1.M Ponyboy walks Johnny to his house but, Johnny decides not to go in because his parents were having another argument. Johnny then decides to go to the empty lot where most of the greasers hangout for the night. Ponyboy tags along because it's not time for him to go home yet. The two boys end up falling asleep in the lot, Ponyboy wakes up suddenly two hours later and realizes he is late and is going to be in big trouble with his oldest brother when he gets home. Ponyboy runs home hoping that both of his brothers will be sound asleep but he's in for a rude awakening. Ponyboy walks into his house to find his oldest brother Darry sitting in his chair reading a news paper. Ponyboy tries to seek passed him but he sees him and puts the paper down. Darry gets up from his chair and starts yelling and Ponyboy for coming home so late and having both him and Sodapop( Ponyboy's younger older brother) worried sick. Ponyboy tries to say he's sorry but Darry continues to yell. Ponyboy begins to yell back saying that he is tired of him always yelling at him. Ponyboy is restricted to bed rest for a week after he wakes up after the brawl and Dally’s death. He finds a picture of Bob the Soc in Sodapop’s high school yearbook. Bob’s smile reminds him of Sodapop’s and concludes that Bob was cocky, hot-tempered, frightened, and human. Randy arrives at the house to talk to Ponyboy and does not think about Pony’s feelings They talk about the hearing scheduled for the next day. Ponyboy deliriously says that he killed Bob himself and that Johnny is still alive. Darry asks Randy to leave. After the hearing, Ponyboy becomes detached and depressed. Mr. Syme, Ponyboy’s English teacher, says that Ponyboy is failing and he can raise his grade to a C by writing an outstanding theme on a topic of his choice. The next day at lunch, Ponyboy goes to the grocery store with Steve and Two-Bit for candy bars and Cokes and they almost get into a fight with some Socs. Ponyboy threats them with a broken glass bottle, which worries Steve and Two-Bit. They are relieved when Ponyboy bends down to pick up the broken glass, not wanting anyone to get a flat tire. Later Darry and Ponyboy fight, which make Sodapop run out of the house because he can't take it anymore and they are tearing him apart. The brothers makeup and race back home. Ponyboy finds a note from Johnny telling him to stay gold. Ponyboy decides that he wants to tell the story of his friends.
Also after Dally visted them and took them out for a meal when they came back there were people at the church and the church was on fire. The people there were worried about a couple kids that were still stuck in the building. So Johnny and Ponyboy and Dally went in the building to save them. Johnny wasn’t as lucky as Ponyboy in injuries. When Johnny tried to get out of the building the roof caved in and came down on him.
On the first day, Ponyboy is found by the Soc’s and is attacked, only for his family and friends shortly to arrive to rescue him (Chapter 1). On the second day, Ponyboy finds a girl from the Socs, in which they go to the local movie theatre with Two-Bit and Johnny (Chapter 2 and 3). Then, later that night, Johnny murders Bob (from the Socs) as an act of self defense. Because of this, they have to run away from their town (Chapter 4). On the third day, Johnny and Ponyboy arrive at their runaway destination where Ponyboy cuts and bleaches his precious hair. They spend the next 5 days reading Gone with the Wind and smoking packs of cigarettes as time passes on (Chapter 5). On the eighth day, Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy save children from a burning church. This results in Johnny having a broken back and the rest of them having minor injuries (Chapter 6). On the ninth day, the rumble occurs and the Greasers pull off a victory. Later that night, Johnny dies from the injuries that had happened to him when a piece of the building fell on his back. Sometimes, things can be rough. In this fantastic book by S.E. Hinton- The Outsiders, the story starts off with a boy named Ponyboy. WHen his brother gets mad at him, he runs away, expecting to return the next morning. That is all turned upside down when his friend Johnny kills a boy. They run away to Windrixville together. Then, on their way back, they spot a burning church and run inside and save the children trapped in the back. Johnny is seriously injured by a piece of burning wood. Throughout the next chapters, the boys are preparing for the big fight against an enemy gang, the Socs. When Ponyboy and Johnny come back from town with Dally they find out there is a fire in the church and there are kids inside the church. Ponyboy and Johnny climb into the burning church in search of the kids. They find the kids in the back of the church scared Ponyboy and Johnny Start to carry the kids out the window. Dally appears and yells “ The roof is going to cave in!” as the last child Johnny pushes Ponyboy out the window and Then Johnny screams.
While at a movie theater, Dally is antagonizing and annoying several Soc girls. Johnny stands up to Dally, his hero, and states, “‘Leave her alone, Dally.’ ‘Huh?’ Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny couldn't say ‘Boo’ to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, ‘You heard me. Leave her alone’” (24). It took all of Johnny’s bravery to stand up to his absolute idol. He was willing to stand up to a dangerous boy that could easily defeat him in a fight, to save others. Not only this, but when a church is burning down with children inside, Ponyboy states, ”Johnny wasn't behaving at all like his old self. ... he grinned at me. He wasn't scared either. That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes” (92). Johnny gives his own life for kids who have futures. With the lack of family they have, the only thing they both live for is each other and the rest of the gang. Johnny ran into the church to save the kids along with Ponyboy, without thinking about death. He left with Dally telling him not to also, making it very important to Johnny. Johnny ends up in the hospital, knowing he’s going to die. He leaves a letter before his death for ponyboy to see.
During the time after the stabbing, Johnny and Ponyboy spend a lot of time together. After realizing that people get put in the electric chair for murder, they take a train to an abandoned church to hide out from the police. During this time, Johnny and Ponyboy become closer. After Johnny is hospitalized after saving the kids from the burning church, his gang tells him that they have won a fight with the Soc’s. At that point, Johnny realizes that fighting isn’t worth it, he ended up in the hospital due to it.
Terrified and confused, the two greasers hurry to find Dally, the one person the think can help them. Dally sends them with a gun and some money to an abandoned church near Windrixvill, where they hide out for a week, they cut their hair to disguise their appearances. After a week, dally comes to check on them, and says that since bob died, the Socs and the greasers have become worse then ever, a giant rumble is to be held the next night to settle the matters once and for all. Cherry feels responsible for the whole problem, acted as a spy for the greasers. Johnny surprises Dally by declaring his intention to go back to Tulsa and turn himself in. Dally drives them back, but as they leave, the notice that the church has caught on fire and it had a large group of schoolchildren inside. Ponyboy and Johnny rush inside the church to save the children. Just when they get the last child through the window, the roof caves in and Ponyboy blacks out again.
