Mass media, famous people, fashion trends, the way you talk, even the way you carry yourself are all defined as popular culture, or as we know it pop culture. Pop culture is the taste of ordinary people in whatever time it is rather than being educated, in other words what is popular. This culture is very unique than other cultures in a vast amount of ways, whether you realize it or not pop culture affects or has affected just about everyone at some time throughout their life. Whether it be what you listen to, or who you look up to, or even how you act, pop culture concreated that. Looking back on pop culture, how it is said in bold, that this culture is for the uneducated, meaning it is something that is produced for the people instead of learned or educated by someone else. Which is not always true, the main target of pop culture is young people, such as teenagers. Pop culture carries many attitudes alongside of it, which is a very curvy path that today's world is on. Now I will go into how pop culture targets and influences teenagers or young adults.

Pop culture, what does this term even mean? It seems to be a word that contains subjects of media, social structure, and society as a whole. According to the dictionary, pop culture is defined as “cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people”. In the society we live in today, we are constantly surrounded by pop culture, either that is with television, magazines, different sources of social media and/or exposure to others. Due to pop culture being such a dominant contribution into our world today, it has effected many parts of society. The domination of social media has created idealistic views that are stressed upon female adolescents in particular. Upon media’s influence, traditional tactics and work have been modified in order to keep up with our technology oriented society. This alters the schools and education systems. Through the use of television, social media and other means of pop culture, serious study is necessary due to the negative effects it has on the younger generation and the effects it has for their futures.

When I started this class, my definition of pop culture consisted of all things media related such as television, social media, and the internet. Throughout the class, I learned that pop culture emcompasses much more topics, such as politics and language. It was interesting to view pop culture through a sociological lense. To think sociologically means to think about how society functions, with the application of important theoretical approaches, such as those of Marx and Foucault. I also realized that I was not as informed about pop culture as I thought.

Never before has it been so easy to shed light on a person or an idea, giving it levels of popularity that were considered inconceivable in ages past. Pop/culture serves as a way to connect people; help them relate to one another over shared opinions and interests. It was and is the representative of the majority. But what of the times before the internet? How was pop-culture expressed in a time when people did not have the ability to express their thoughts and opinions with millions at a time almost instantaneously? Theatre is one of the most time-honored means of entertainment. Before television and computers and the internet, actors would don a costume and tell act for masses of people. It was a form of storytelling that was not limited to the literate or rich or the scholars, but could be enjoyed by anyone form any economic background. Through it we can see our history and opinions in the form of characters, plots, and settings. We can observe the changing of mainstream opinions through the common themes and recurring motifs in the most popular plays.

Social media has many benefits that come with it. Social media has brought attention and educated society today; especially the younger society. As a kid I was always naïve and blind to the terrible and monstrous things that were occurring everyday in the world. Many of these things were brought to my attention when I got social media, specifically twitter. There was one video I remember in particular that had a many young African children bending down to a filthy brown river attempting to find a source of water. These children were incredibly skinny with their ribcages visible, legs like twigs and appeared as if they hadn’t eaten in days. All of the children were extremely dirty with mud covering every inch of their body that wasn’t already covered in a thin raggedy piece of clothing.
