Volunteering in a Post-Racial Society
I chose to volunteer with Alliance San Diego because it seemed like a group that cared about justice for everyone. And they did not appear to be a sit by and wait around group, they were a group of angry activist fighting for justice even before the election. Safe to say when the election was between Hillary and Donald, shit hit the fan. Our country was in complete disarray, stuck between a candidate they did not like, and a candidate hell bent on killing us all. The obvious option was the spawn of Satan, clearly. In our current situation activism is necessary. A lot of Alliance’s work has to do with people of color. Before the election it was encouraging people to vote, educating them on their option,

I had to explain to my boyfriend how disproportionately people of color are affected by climate issues. One of the issues alliance brought up was, a child of color goes to the hospital for asthma related attacks in southern California three times more than a white child. This is due to lack of education, lack of equipped staff, lack of proper air ventilation, and lack of health care access. Obviously the dust in the air isn’t personally attacking children of color, but the way Americas education system is set up leads to these circumstances.
A further explanation of racism in America when it comes to climate change, are the people affected more during natural disasters. It is not hard to remember our governments’ reaction to Hurricane Katrina in contrast to Hurricane Sandy. Can you honestly imagine Mitt Romney in the ghetto of New Orleans helping package food for black families? Me either. When the lives of black people are on the line, it is always better to let them die than spend

The graph on page 184 in “Perspectives of Intraracial Coalition and Conflict” (Smith) the main concern for black immigrants was health care and immigrant rights and their foreign policy. For African Americans justice and education were their highest concerns. Neither of the groups found any importance in environmental policy, which is connected to their concerns and their well-being. I think this all falls under the lack of education in these communities. Not just learning about climate change, but also how it affects them at home, and how the third world countries are affected. In the end, despite what African Americans and Black immigrants disagree on, the aspects of our society negatively affect them
I offer my services to the community in a way that many people wouldn’t expect. Due to financial issues I wasn’t able to volunteer the way that I wanted to but that didn’t change anything. In my area and amongst peers I have become someone they can come to in times of needs, whether it’s for a place to sleep, a hot meal, or an outlet for their emotional and mental distress. I have done extensive research on how to handle certain mental illnesses and emotional outburst so I can be prepared to give everyone the care they need. I am also very active in educating other members of my family and community about mental illness, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse in the black community. I found that there are many ways to give back to the community.
As a child, growing up in a low income household has made me humble and attentive to other’s situations. Similarly, my South Asian family has instilled a strong nature to serve others, which is the reason I have been involved in service learning activities throughout my undergraduate career, such as LIFT – Chicago and Refugee One. Even post-graduation, my work at Wekaw caters to urban underserved populations. In graduate school, I wish to continue this involvement in campus organizations which enforce diversity inclusion, whether it is joining a volunteering club aiding community populations or conducting research with immigrants. This is one aspect of diversity I can contribute to Rosalind Franklin University, and is also why my professional goal is to work in a community hospital serving diverse populations.
I love the idea of providing students with a variety of opportunities that would satisfy each student's needs. Whether its research, volunteering and community service, it all is provided here. The curriculum also allows for a great amount of flexibility enabling students to pursue these other interest that would make them very competitive for residencies. I have a great interest in practicing in underserved communities upon graduation, therefore every opportunity I get to volunteer in clinics and shadow physician in underserved regions is something I look forward to here at Western University of Health Sciences. Likewise, the diverse student body is great as each student come from various backgrounds and have unique experiences all of which
The North American Drought of 1988 marked the very first time global warming crossed over from scientists to mass media coverage. Following an American professor’s address to the Senate correlating abnormal weather to global warming, European nations addressed the issue, and many countries began to reduce greenhouse gas. The European Union ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 to make it legally binding. In Europe, global warming was acknowledged as a problem, with the only debate centered around how serious of a problem it was- 87% said it was a very serious problem, where around 10%
The African American community has been created in a manner that restricts the proper development of a sustainable community. For example, if you think of the areas where predominately African Americans are present, they are underdeveloped communities.
volunteering is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. In this report i will talk about the different types of volunteering in the:
Climate change is one of the leading global and political problems we face today. Recently, Texas experienced the worst flooding from a major hurricane in their history. Aside from Harvey in the United States, India, Bangladesh, and Nepal also had dangerous monsoons that caused massive loss of life and property. Although there have been fewer hurricanes in the last decade they have become significantly stronger causing more devastation wherever they make landfall. While Harvey gained strength just before landfall it stalled over Houston causing massive flooding before returning to the Gulf again. Climate change remains a divisive political issue, with a significant percentage of Republicans saying they don’t believe the scientific consensus that man-made industrial emissions are accelerating the rise of global warming due to climate
Tim Wise’s lecture was very interesting and made me see a side to race that I haven’t seen before. Many things stood out to me throughout his lecture, one being his perspective on why the slogan now and days is “black lives matter” instead of “all lives matter.” He made the point that being white and have white lives matter is the norm for many but when it come to black people they are felt as being outside the norm. One thing that could be done to join these races together is finding a way to change it for “black lives matter” to “all lives matter.
The Unites States of America is currently working to combat climate change in order to protect people from its effects. By combatting climate change, the USA hopes to prevent its effects from becoming worse in the future because the USA cares for its citizens and doesn’t want them to keep experiencing the consequences of climate change. The USA is putting great effort into dealing with climate change and also hopes that other businesses, organization, and individuals will join them in their effort (Environmental News Service). One concern the USA has towards climate change is its cause of natural disasters. Climate change is bringing more natural disasters by making weather patterns stronger, and weather patterns are becoming stronger as climate change grows which is bringing more natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and drought to the USA (Rice). One example of a natural disaster that occurred in the USA as a result of climate change is the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. In this event, a tornado rated 5 on the Enhanced Fuijta scale hit Oklahoma and had a negative impact on this city by destroying many of its houses and buildings also resulting in the destruction of businesses such as schools (Cable News Network). Another major concern of the USA towards climate change is that it will cause a rise in the global sea level which will result in many of its coastal cities to be submerged underwater. There will be a permanent 4 feet rise in the global sea level
Unlike other problems in America; abortion, gay marriage, etc. climate change has a strong scientific consensus about the need for action. One can make a good case that abortion is good or bad. But can’t argue that based on the evidence, climate change is not happening. And just because most climate scientists believe that climate change is happening, does not mean that that any certain policy is the “right”
I had the opportunity to serve at the Dayton N.A.A.C.P, which is a local 501©3 that’s vision is to “ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights and there is no racial hatred or racial discrimination”. This is a national organization that has been around in the Dayton are for more than 100 years and seems to be still going strong. It is an organization that fights inequalities in various areas, such as: education, employment and judicial. The local organization sustains itself by means of donations and currently operates by utilizing a mainly volunteer staff with two to three full time employees. The branch serves the Montgomery county area, as well as many other surrounding areas of the city of Dayton.
Historically African Americans have been the most disadvantage group in America. They have a long history of slavery. They were not considered for high paying jobs. Their schooling was different. Their communities were different. They were not welcomed to mingle with white Americans socially, publicly, or officially. After the civil rights movement, they were given equal rights and freedom of life. Although, after the civil rights movement to till now, over the years, a lot has been changed and improved, still now and then, there are heartbreaking racial incidents happen. There is a discrimination against them in many aspects of life regardless we acknowledge it or not. The main reason for selecting this issue was two group members out of three had prepared their proposals on this issue and the continuing disadvantages to African Americans.
The first major discussion we had was about the “3 Events that Mis-Shaped Black America” and we were divided in to 3 groups: how hip-hop mistreats African-American women, Hurricane Katrina and police brutality. The topic my group had was how hip-hop mistreated African-American women. Each group had to have a speaker and said speaker had to prove why their topic should be given more importance than the other topic. Evidently, police brutality was the most important topic because of what is currently going on in that aspect in today’s
One thing I have learned and I will take with me after this class is environmental racism. Environmental racism is to put a minority group or any group at a disadvantage, to treat them less that or as if they are not equal to you. These people are not given the same standards as people in different neighborhoods. These people are forced to put up with having to live in conditions that are not as safe or hazard free but they have no choice because they don’t have as much power as the people putting those hazards there. Environmental racism is something that we should all be aware of and something that we should all strive to end. Environmental racism is one thing that I have learned a lot about and I will definitely take with me after class.
The volunteer noticed no direct oppression or discrimination from workers though due to the low participation of females and ethnic, aboriginal or GLBTI peoples, the determination was rendered inconclusive. The program on Monday is predominantly white Australian males thus unofficially labeled the men’s group by staff. Conversely, the volunteer noticed the limitations in the programs resources, such as funding and realised that the limitation was possibly due to the systemic oppression and discrimination compounded by a complaisant/docile acceptance and an apathetic outlook by staff and participants (Allan, Pease, Briskman 2003; Chenoweth and McAuliffe 2012).
