Poverty In Africa

Africa became known as the “dark continent” through the Europeans eyes. Not only from the skin color of its inhabitants but also from the vast lands still undiscovered. Due to the Europeans’ view that Africa had a backward sense, they believed it was their responsibility to help. Conflict arose from the creation of a new society resulting in ethnic feuds and imperialism. European imperialistic powers subjugated Africa to strengthen their own economy. Africa’s rich supply of resources such as a large population had extremely detrimental to its economy. Slavery Sentence. The welfare of Africa’s people weakened rapidly from the poor management of the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Malaria. Africa is the least developed part of the world, given the impact of European imperialism, slavery, and an inability to deal with major diseases.

Like many other continents in the world Africa has a lot of differences in itself for example there are differences in geography ,language, politics, religion and other things in life due to Africa’s lack of political government over an extended period of time.

Africa has had a long and tumultuous road of colonization and decolonization the rush to colonize Africa started in the 17th century with the discovery of the vast amounts of gold, diamonds, and rubber with colonization hitting a fever pitch during World War I. However, the repercussions of colonization have left deep wounds that still remain unhealed in the 21st century. Early on, European nations such as Britain, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium scrambled for territories. Countries wanted land so they could harvest the resources, increase trade, and gain power. The European colonization of Africa brought racism, civil unrest, and insatiable greed; all of which have had lasting impacts on Africa.

During this time period, Africa was being colonized and taken over by European powers. This was caused by the The Berlin Conference and it consisted of European powers deciding what they should do about Africa. Africa didn't actually have a say in this. Therefore, Europe ended up dividing up Africa into colonies that they took over.

European powers gathered in 1884 to discuss which part of Africa were theirs to avoid fighting, however this was done between European countries, and the thought of even inviting a spokesperson from Africa was beyond them. The people of Africa were enslaved and forced to work the land for natural resources such as rubber and diamond. After the European powers claimed all that they could, two independent countries remained. These two countries were Liberia and Ethiopia. After the Europeans abruptly left Africa after they had imperialized them for years, Africa was left to develop a government and economy for themselves. The Europeans made no haste to establish borders that would agree with the Africans and their tribes. The borders for the countries were random, the European nations paid little to no attention to the cultural affairs of the African tribes. The terribly placed borders per newly formed African country along with the fact that they had to establish their own government once the Europeans left caused intense turmoil that still carries over to today.

African groups are being split and and mixed together. Some countries who were colonizing wanted to bring their traditions and cultures to the African people. For example, when the French came to Africa they wanted to have direct control of their part of Africa. The French wanted Africans to be like the French. Over time with the French under control Africans would slowly adopt some French traditions. Another example is some Africans lived in smaller tribes and had a tribe leader. When the French came the tribes didn't want to be controlled by the French because that takes away meaning and purpose to have a tribe leader. The French were taking away the leader's power. It was like a tradition to have one person lead the tribe. With all kinds of different countries racing to colonize Africa, Africans were flooded with different cultures, languages, and traditions. Life as the Africans knew it was getting ripped apart and put back together with a bunch of extra pieces (traditions, languages, etc.) within it. It is hard for us Americans to understand what it was like for Africans during this time because the United States of America is filled with different languages, cultural, traditions, and much more. We have never really experienced new people coming and taking over us and our beliefs like Africa. We will never fully be able to understand because America doesn't have one main race or ethnic group. There's two things that any person or nation likes is money or profit, and that is what they had in mind. Africa isn't as industrialized or modern has Europe. Africa also doesn't have any factories. Without factories they can't build guns, or any kind of weapon. The African's only weapon that they had at this time was spears. Spears are no match for any kind of gun. When Africans tried to rebel or go to war with the countries it never worked because they did not have the right kind or weapons or supplies. This article addresses the excessive wastefulness of food and resources in the United States. I particularly agree with how the author describes, not only the amount of food that is thrown out, but also the amount of money that it translates to.
