Why is poverty a problem and can it be avoided? Poverty is the scarcity or the lack of a certain amount of material possessions or money. Poverty is a multifaceted concept, which may include social, economic, and political elements. There is a need to identify the causes of poverty to create a change. However, even considering the individual histories and circumstances of countries and regions, there are significant trends in the causes of poverty. The main causes of poverty are history, discrimination, and social inequality. The major religious figures-including Confucius, the Buddha, Jesus, and Mohammed, to name a few-have consistently taught their followers that focusing on “mammon” is spiritually destructive and that allowing fellow …show more content…

Circumstances and end results administer the outer world. Confusing the inside universe of our brain, over which we have control, with the outside world, which we can just impact yet not control, causes the most suffering. To exacerbate the situation, we often expect that external objects and circumstances are the most valuable things in life. We erroneously believe that happiness is found outside of ourselves. At that point, when the external world disappoints, we encounter anguish, fear, envy, and anxiety. Yet, Epictetus rejects the view that these feelings are forced on us. Rather, we are responsible for our feeling, sentiments, and actions, and the circumstances of our lives are essentially the field in which we practice our violation. People need to accept whatever happens calmly and never feel ashamed and be responsible for their actions. What other do is external to us; we only have control over our reaction. What other’s do does not hurt us, unless we let it. This could make a difference between a life of happiness and misery. People can learn from Epictetus’ view, which can prevent some poverty. Secondly, people need to distinguish the difference between moral and economic progress. There are several lessons that one can draw from Mohandas Gandhi speech on moral and economic progress.
