Poverty and Hungry in Jamaica “Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.”- James Baldwin. When a person is living in poverty, everything they do daily seems like an accomplishment because it is difficult for them to possess. If a person never really have food, it feels like a blessing when the do receive it. Everything seems expensive because the have nothing. What exactly is poverty? Poverty is the state of not having enough money and/or materials to meet basic life needs such as food, clothes and shelter. Hunger and poverty are two aspects that go hand in hand with each other. Ramkissoon is mainly angry with government because he feels that they are deceiving. During election time, they give food to the people in the community; when they are voted into office, they leave the people to starve. They promise free education and students are later left with empty dreams of one day receiving an education (Douglas, 2012). Another reason why poverty and hunger exist in the country is because Jamaica is too busy competing with other countries and there own people are forgotten. The Jamaican Labor Party (JLP) spends too much time and money competing with other countries for money that Jamaica will not get back. The government spends money to be recognized by countries that don’t care if our people are dead or alive. All the money they spend on conferences and plane fares can be given to people in small communities who are praying for food to eat (King, 2012). Another reason is because people are not motivated to try and succeed. People get comfortable with having little to no food. Because they believe that no one cares, they do not seek to share their hunger with others. They have never seen anyone like them become something significant in life. Therefore they settle for working on a farm and taking care of donkeys. They are used to promises made by the government being broken; they no longer get excited about the positive changes offered by the government. To live in
